Ok, it wasn’t the strongest opposition on Saturday, but it struck me how quickly Kipre is improving now he’s settling and playing regularly. It was a monster performance. He was powerful, tidy and assured. You certainly wouldn’t want to tangle with Steamroller Cedric.

What do you think we will do with greaves? I mean does a £15 mill purchase become a back up or do you think we will look to recoup some of his transfer and bring in someone else.

Kipres looking like a beast and not as dodgy with the ball as he has in previous years.

Lots of games and Greaves will play some of them. If we were to lose him, we’d be short on CH cover. As it stands though, Kipre should not be dropped as he’s earned that shirt.

Even more impressive he’s a right footer playing left centre back.

In with a shout of our player of the season so far, at least if he'd played a few more games. Aside from one dodgy half, he's been immense. Unflappable, dominant in the air, great with his feet, always looking to progress the ball (right into the area sometimes!) - I really like him.

He's like a rich man's Manuel Thetis!!

Coo, imagine what McKenna could have done with Thetis, he's be scoring overhead kicks every game!

He's miles better than Thetis was.

Thetis is probably in my top5 players who were pretty poor, but who I sort of liked anyway.

Bontcho another in that list.

I thought Boncho was great! How could he not be with a name like that? And he got a hat trick against Grimsby in the FA Cup!

Thetis was dreadful. Like watching Lurch stumbling on to the field.

Now a player he does remind me of, albeit in a different position, is Gus Uhlenbeek. The Gusmeister had me in stitches. Once he revved up and started off with the ball it was dumper truck with faulty brakes time. No left, no right, just straight ahead with the opposition bouncing off him or taking avoiding action. Charge!

‘Shut the gate!’ People would cry (thank goodness the stands were there to stop him). And at the end of his run he’d hit a cannon ball shot into the stand or over it. He was great and worth the entrance money alone.

Edit: after he left us, he went to Fulham. I was working with a Fulham ST holder and he asked what he was like. I gave him a description a bit like this one. The Monday after the first game my work chum saw him play he came in, smiled and just said ‘yep’. He’s 55 now - I hope whatever he’s doing he’s having a great life.

Oh, undoubtedly, just reminiscing about players of Christmas past, and more than a little tongue in cheek. Loved Thetis though, I guess the similarity is being a big buggar and having a marauding style, although I suspect in Thetis' case it's was more a series of missed attempts at controlling the ball!

Yes, controlling the ball, passing - that sort of stuff wasn’t really Thetis’ thing. Mind you, it’d take a brave man to tell him that to his face. If he asked you’d tell him he was a cross between George Best, Maradona and Bobby Moore. Not one to mess with!

Uhlenbeek is another in my top 5 naff but I loved list.

I recall a joke advert in twtd after he joined Fulham, recruiting for someone to collect balls from the Thames.

Just looked to see what happened to Thetis after his time here.

Played just one game for Sheff U and that was his lot. A little surprising, thought he could have done a job for someone.

Yes, Thetis could have done a job for someone - but not as a footballer.

Another player worth the entrance money was Graham Harbey. He actually looked like a footballer. When he ran onto the pitch. After that it was all downhill. You’d just wait for the next calamity knowing it was on its way as sure as night follows day. I liked him for that.

Pride of Anglia describes him as Retired/Inactive. Hard to tell whether he was ever anything else!

But Graham, who is 61 now, made 70 appearances and scored 3 goals - he clearly impressed John Duncan if nobody else.

Harbey really was a strange one.

He started here really strongly and collected something like three or four 'Fisons man of the match' awards in the first couple of months of the season in 87-88. Scored a couple of long-range efforts.

From October 1987 onwards though, good lord he was bad.

The following summer, we bought in David Hill as a combative central midfielder and he ended up playing left-back as Harbey simply couldn't be trusted to play there.

I actually remember his debut against Aston Villa and thought ‘hello, he looks a good signing’. That didn't age well. He was a real trier, but was quite simply cr@p.

I remember that game. Duncan's first for us, Graham Taylor's first for Villa.

Chris O'Donnell scored a cracking header.........in his own net.

I remember literally just before kick off Duncan was running around the pitch talking at the players with a bit of paper in his hand. ‘Not a good sign’ thought I. And so it proved.

He did bring in a few good players which formed the basis of Lyall’s promotion team.

In the Premier League £15m defenders sit on the bench........!

However, I doubt we get near that money for him so could well cut our losses if we went up again.

From what i've seen (I didn't see him at Hull) is he's a decent championship CB. Can he improve? I'm not sure. Therefore he's definitely not going to play in the PL next year (EDIT: if we get there!)
