Robin Turner R.I.P. on 21:41 - Dec 22 by GlasgowBlue
If not for his goals against Bristol Rovers in the 3rd round we wouldn't have been at Wembley.

From Pride of Anglia
Certain player's, whilst not exactly setting the world a light with their footballing prowess, demand the utmost respect from fan's for their undying loyalty to a club.
One such player is former Town striker Robin Turner.
Between his league debut in the 1-0 reverse at Derby in October '75, and his final appearance for Ipswich in a 1-0 home win over Nottingham Forest in April '85, he made just 29 full appearances and 33 as substitute (netting on 6 occasions). That's an average of just 6 games a season over 10 years !.
At 16, in this second year at Portman Road, he was a member of the 1973 FA Youth Cup winning side, was capped by England at Youth Level and was described at the time as a "nippy, prolific goalscorer".
Behind the likes of David Johnson, Trevor Whymark, Paul Mariner, however he was never given the opportunity to stake a regular place in the first team lineup. Although to be brutally honest from a fan's point of a view that was quite fortuitous.
Some players are blessed with a certain amount of luck but not our Robin. In the 1978 FA Cup Semi-Final against West Brom at Highbury, on as a 2nd half substitute, he was clear through on goal and with only the 'keeper to beat but he struck his shot several yards over the bar and into the Town fan's at the Clock End. Not the first time in a Blue and White shirt that he had missed an absolute sitter.
Town where 3-1 up by that stage so no was harm done. I should mention that he did score twice in the 2-2 5th Round draw against Bristol Rovers at Eastville earlier that year. An orange ball was used in that game due to the covering of snow on the pitch -- maybe one should have been used more often !.
After close to 12 years at the club, and with not so much as a hint of a Testimonial, he was transferred to Swansea City in March '85 (where incidentally he scored 8 goals in 20 league appearances). He returned to East Anglia later that year where he made just under a dozen appearances for Colchester United. Those proved to be his last in the Football League.
Last seen (by myself anyway) playing for Bury Town against Folkestone in a Beazer Home League game on February 10th, 1990. Bury around that time seemed to be a clearing house for ex-Town players and included in the lineup that day with Robin Turner were Kevin Steggles, Tommy Parkin, Tony Kinsella and Alan Brazil !
That's sad to hear, especially for his family so close to Christmas. Not sure he quite made legendary status, but part of that magnificent squad for decade, which is no mean feat.
Another reminder our heroes can't last forever.
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

This is one of my favourite parts of the world to escape to for genuine edge of the world tranqulity. Once you mention Ipswich people often know Robin. What a wonderful place to live out your life after football RIP.

Great piece. Turner wouldn't have set himself up during his footballing career so it's good to see that he found a good alternative and unsurprisingly was school football coach in a very remote part of Ireland.

I work on and off in that area for the last 15 years. It was only after talking to someone on site after the promotion to the premier league that half the lads on site started telling me that Robin Turner was their PE teacher/coach.
He's a bit of a legend out that way

What a lovely tribute - even without the football backstory he sounds a thoroughly good chap.

As you say Robin Turner was very unlucky not to play in the Cup Final. He missed the 3rd Round game against Cardiff. But then played a key part in every round leading up to the Final.
He was the unfortunate player who played the most Cup minutes leading up to the Final & then not get selected. Turner played for 435 minutes (Out of possible 540) to get us to Wembley. while David Geddis only played for 73 minutes.
Robin Turner minutes in each cup game 00 mins - 3rd Round - Cardiff 90 mins - 4th Round - Hartlepool 90 mins - 5h Round - Bristol Rovers 75 mins - 6th Round - Bristol Rovers (replay) (subbed for Brazil) 90 mins - Quarter Final - Millwall 90 mins - Semi Final - West Brom
So going by that I feel it was so unfortunate that he never played a part in the final that day. Especially considering how much of a part he played in getting us there.
Minutes played by each player before Final * Played in Final 540 - Paul Cooper* 540 - Mick Mills* 540 - Alan Hunter* 540 - Paul Mariner* 468 - Brian Talbot* 453 - John Wark* 450 - Clive Woods* 447 - George Burley* 435 - ROBIN TURNER 360 - Russell Osman 340 - Colin Viljoen 183 - Roger Osborne* 180 - Kevin Beattie* 179 - Mick Lambert* 90 - Les Tibbott 90 - Eric Gates 73 - David Geddis* (Only mins came in the 3rd Round against Cardiff) 17 - Tommy Parkin 15 - Alan Brazil

What a lovely little tribute. He sounds like a stellar person and a much loved and respected member of that community. It’s a shame he didn’t get longer to enjoy his retirement, but given he worked to 69 maybe he was getting all the enjoyment he needed from helping others.

Although picking Geddis was a master stroke by Robson as he used his energy to harass Sammy Nelson, Arsenal's attacking left back.

I’m off to Google where Belmullet is.
Do it
Even for the North West of Ireland it's remote as hell. Absolutely stunning though
