I give you ‘A Christmas Carol’. It was published in December 1843 and aside from how beautifully it’s written, its lessons ring down through the ages.

It very much defines Christmas along with other ‘traditions’ introduced around that time and will do for many decades to come.

The Title is a very bold claim by me, but I stand by it.

All comments and alternatives gratefully received!

Could not agree more.

Dickens was a genius.

Merry Christmas!!

Christmas Carol is actually quite a good introduction to anyone wanting to read CDs books, not least because it’s short - one of his Christmas stories and actually written in 6 weeks because he was worried about money having over spent in the US.

I actually watched The Muppet Christmas Carol yesterday for the first time, at Mrs Cs behest. It was actually surprisingly good and cleverly done.

Back to the book, it was published on 19th Dec 1843 and all 6000 copies were sold by Christmas Eve. It’s been in print ever since.

Like a lot of his books it draws not just on things that concerned him, but his own experiences, including working in a blacking factory that once stood in what is now Villiers St close to Charing Cross.

Too old, its really from a Christmas past. It's 2025 we need something written for now, Christmas present, or Christmas future, ie yet to come.

Personally, I've always thought Great Expectations is the best book ever.

Ah, but that’s the point in my view. The book and what it teaches us is timeless.

Great Expectations - excellent choice!

I would suggest that Bleak House is probably the best from what is an extraordinary oeuvre but perhaps not the easiest way into Dickens.

Writing, like all art forms is not a competition, although it seems everything has to be these days. So to be pedantic there just no such thing as the "Best Book Ever Written."
However, "My Favourite Book Ever," is acceptable.

I would probably pick "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, but just like my current favourite music, painting, film, etc this is likely to change.

Merry Xmas everyone and see you at Millwall tomorrow.

Another good choice. I like Bleak House - the story line is excellent. If I was to choose a ‘full’ CD book I’d go for David Copperfield.

As an aside, 'Muppet Christmas Carol' is not only the best Muppet film there is, it's the best film version of A Christmas Carol, Michael Caine's best film and the best Christmas film full stop.

I liked the way it stays largely true to the book, using lots of the original text. It’s very cleverly done.

John Buchan’s 39 Steps is a terrific book. On a similar topic, I also recommend Erskine Childers’ The Riddle of the Sands

I think there is a difference. I could argue that CC is the best in the sense of most important, impactful and insightful, but the whole idea is for people to disagree because you are right. It’s not a competition.

To counter your argument about competition and say art, artists sometimes did compete. turnerand Constable certainly did sometimes when paintings were first exhibited to the point of finishing touches to outdo each other before the great and the good rocked in.

It’s all good fun.

My favourite book for the ‘desert island’ would possibly be James Clavell’s Shogun. A very long but for me spellbinding book.

For those that cannot be bothered with Kindle or paper books, I’d recommend Libby - the library app. The books can be borrowed free for 21 days which means if you enjoy reading as I do you can try and discard at no cost if it’s not for you.

Always been a favourite part of Christmas watching any version of ACC.. and the other day saw a decent film called The man who invented Christmas detailing its creation... probably not all true but a good interpretation of how the idea developed.
