O'Shea - guidance needed please 18:59 - Jan 1 with 1408 viewsBlaggers12

I'd really like someone with more tactical and footballing knowledge than I to explain Dara O'Shea to me please. 500 more passes than anyone else in our team, most blocks, most attempted long passes, but yet still seems to give the ball away more than any other player. It was like watching walking football at times today, back and forth, and then a long pass over the top to turn over possession. What am I missing here?

Because he makes a bad pass every now and again just like every other player.

What he doesnt get is appreciation that hes being asked to look for various different passing options throughout the game. Long. Short. Some easy. Some extremely difficult. Some come off some dont.

a niche perspective

You just said it , he makes more passes than anyone else plus every player in the team will make bad passes every match. He is having a very good season yet you try to find negative.

You are nearly there.

Someone who does 500 more passes than any other player will also make more dud passes, and consequently you will see more of them.

I am not his biggest fan and he made a couple of ricks today.

But the team shape and system clearly requires the working of the ball left and right, through established patterns, drawing the press, drawing pponents out of position to make space etc

If he makes more passes than others then he will therefore give it away more than others.

Not complex.

He is superb at long range passes, incredible even at times, yet seems to struggle passing a few yards.

Additionally along with many others he misses opportunities to put our attackers making runs through but then picks some bizarre moments to float it forward. Like I say though, when he gets it right there are some incredible long range passes.

He has generally been superb though. For all that it would be great to have Burgess and Wolfy involved, Dara and Kipre are clear upgrades.

In fairness, a 25 4 yard passes each match to Kipré doesn't make him Glenn Hoddle. It's pedestrian football at times, and it detracts from any sort of pace and urgency we have.

I've been a bit concerned recently by his developing habit of losing focus and toe poking the ball to the attackers when he is assessing passing options with his foot on the ball, but otherwise think he's a pretty reliable and committed defender, and for a defender good on the ball

The pedestrian pace is intentional. The idea is to draw the opposition attackers and midfielders towards him to create space in the middle and a spare man. One successful pass puts 3-4-5 (6-7???!!) players in front of the ball making their ability to defend much more difficult. O'Shea's problem today was our midfielders not moving enough to create the angles for the successful passes.

Also, as has been said, a player making significantly more passes than anyone else is likely to make more wayward passes.

You're missing sn understanding of football.

Add to that, you've answered your own question.

Ah, so you weren't really asking to be educated.

This sort of thing really triggers me. How can you have been watching Town and McKenna's town specifically for last few years and not understand it. We are looking to tempt/bring the opposition onto us who are just sitting back. It isn't really us being negative it's trying to counter a negative opposition to a degree.

When we play a better team we are able.to move through the lines quicker. Against teams like Oxford who just out 11 behind the ball there aren't the pockets of space to play into easily so we invite them to press by playing from the back and the nervous parts when we pass at the last second sometimes is to free space. (Walton puts his foot on the ball a lot - tempts the striker to him).

We will always look better against more attacking teams. We do need to work on breaking these teams down as we aren't perfect at it.

I was tempted to reply with similar but then thought either its some trolling or if someone fails to comprehend why we play like we do, my explanation will fall on deaf ears.

it’s amazing how much of the ground seems to clamour for us to get the ball forward quicker and therefore I assume also does not understand why we play like we do currently.

So I just shrug and ignore them.

You managed to look up the stats for amount of passes, blocks, attempted long passed and quote them, and then when talking about your subsequent point you say seems to, seems like with nothing to back it up. Almost like you're talking whatever bobbins you want and have no intention of guidance or understanding. Weird that.
