Oh God, just when I think I might be forgetting that particular afternoon, along comes something else to remind me. I think I got lucky. I went alone with no obvious signs on me that I came from Ipswich. Got there and wasn't even sure which end to be in. A policeman said to me " your supporters are in the opposite end to where we are standing outside at the moment, you might want to take my advice and go in this one instead " He wasn't wrong! He knew something was going to kick off and it wasn't just a football match. I could say more, but I got back to Ipswich in one piece!

I got there quite early and went to the end where we were supposed to stand. It soon became apparent that it was being occupied by Millwall fans so I moved to the side terrace. Watched the match in relative safety. However the walk to New Cross Gate was grim, as bricks were raining down on us.

I was there too and as far as I could recall there was very little segregation. I was down one end which I believe was the Millwall end. I was in my early 20’s, alone, but an Eastender thus I didn’t have a Ipswich accent which, I believe, was an important issue. Agreed-the walk to New Cross station and journey on the train were precarious and was glad to get home. All said and done I the 6-1 victory, Mariner hatrick and the opening screamer from George. Great days.

My first (domestic) away game, which was a bit of a baptism of fire. Even then I was quite relieved when millwall scored to make the score line respectable for them and was hoping town would just see it out, but that wasn’t our style back then! Massive excitement as a young lad (11) and didn’t quite appreciate the danger we were in.

Went down there on the normal train from Sudbury me and a mate both just 17.
We left at 4-1 got to the overground station and escaped as bottles got thrown from platform to platform. We got to Liverpool Street and found out we got six.l never regret the rights or wrongs it was part of growing up in the day.

The second video is crap. What's the Millwall guy waffling on about? 'Full time, it was like someone flicked a switch'. I was there. At full time it was like a morgue. Outside afterwards, we got a police escort to the coaches with no problems at all. Ipswich fans singing songs! Beforehand I admit it was scary. Our coach got bottled. Maybe I just got lucky afterwards. Overall, I enjoyed the day!

This may sound odd, but as a 14 year old boy I felt more threatened at the semi final at Highbury. We were seated in what would be the Highbury version of the Cobbold Stand. When the game finished, as we were walking down the steps a mob of West Brom fans came up the steps and started attacking anyone coming down. We got outside and I remember my old man throwing me in the front garden of one of the houses next to the ground.

I remember the day well as a 10 year old. Was due to go but my 14 year old sister who rode ponies was in the local hunt team in Pendal and Craven (Yorkshire) and qualified for the Prince Philip Cup play off in Manchester. The finals are at the horse of the year show at christmas and televised. The first time ever the team had qualified. We had to cancel and go to Manchester. I had radio 2 on listening all day. We lost the cup qualifying to South Manchester who had Bobby Charlton's daughter ridding for them. He was there and we chatted to him. He asked who I supported and said they had always been a decent club and he hoped we beat Millwall. The reports of the violence were shocking.

Thank you for posting those. Not seen them before. They’re a bit over dramatised for my liking but certainly triggered a few memories. We were at the game.

The first thing to remember was that there was threat to a greater or lesser extent at a lot of grounds in those days. Not all, but you knew which ones carried risk. Chelsea, West Ham to name but two but there were others where areas of the ground were best avoided - like the day my dad and I decided ‘the shelf’ at Tottenham was a good place to stand. It wasn’t.

For Millwall, we had a couple of tickets for the base of the main stand. Goodness knows how he got them but any way, any how we’d have got in. We weren’t missing that! I heard the day before it was likely to be tasty but so what?

We parked up a long way from the ground - New Cross, Deptford? Can’t remember. We walked and were very early and decided a beer was necessary. Walked in, a lot of very ugly faces turned and looked at us. We did a 180 and left in a hurry. Got to the ground, no problem. The ground was a dump. Literally. It’d been built on a rubbish heap. The mood? Chaotic but that wasn’t too unusual. Bit tense. Well it was the 6th Round and the ground was busy!.

They did a Wild West show to try and distract the assembled. It was pathetic and by then it was clear the Wild West was in the stands. Big time. But we were ok. We were clocked as away fans immediately but that bit of the stand was old codger territory. My dad was looking mean and I was looking my usual scruffy, unpleasant grade A tool who didn’t care. We kept it down.

Burley scored. What a goal. Then it really started to heat up. I can’t remember when the game was stopped but it was more than once if memory serves me right. People from 7 to 70 years old were out on the pitch with lead pipes, fencing, iron bars, you name it. I wasn’t worried about that sort of thing. It was knives, box cutters, Stanley knives chisels, wrapped razor blades I feared. Against those your day wasn’t going to end well.

Talking of ending well, the score got to 3-0. Ffs stop scoring, we whispered and looked glum. Millwall scored. Phew. Then Mariner and Wark made it 6-1 with us thinking bad idea lads!

At the final whistle it wasn’t the happiest place on earth. We knew there would be trouble outside so we stayed in the ground for about an hour. Walked back to the car at a decent pace and away with my dad was growling ‘I’ve had enough, if these toerags want it I’m ready’. Bad idea said I. We got home in good order to look forward to MOTD.

Jimmy Hill scolded Robson for suggesting ‘burn the b’stards’. The old man wrote to Hill giving him both verbal barrels. Jimmy Hill wrote a very nice letter back basically saying s0d off. Oh how we laughed.

A memorable day. It wasn’t unique for trouble, but it was one of the hairiest.

Actually, one of the nastiest was being corralled by police after the Bristol City cup game a few years later and bricks, bottles, concrete, cans you name it raining down on us - there was nowhere to go.

I shouldn’t say it, but I loved those days. The jeopardy was all part of it. Happy memories of brilliant times shared.

Ha yes, that's interesting, I don't remember the problems at Bristol City, and I was there too. Too many matches to remember maybe. I think I might be one of very few supporters of any club other than Liverpool to have stood in the Kop at Anfield! Add to that being in the Arsenal area for the Cup final, interesting days, and I have to say absolutely no problem with either set of fans on the day! Times have certainly moved on for sure.

Yes, the Arsenal fans were fine. We were at the tunnel end with the ITFC people but had mixed quite freely with them in London, on the tube and Wembley way. Afterwards we walked past this pub with a group of Arsenal lads outside.

Hello, we thought, so made to amble by. One of them stepped out. We tensed…. And he broke into a wry smile and said ‘well done you deserved it’. They actually offered us a beer, which we politely declined, but we had a quick chat with them about the game, shook hands, wished each other well and moved on. Rather unusual for those days.

I don’t know if the memory plays tricks, but I don’t think there was any hassle that day for people. Reading the post commenting on WBA, I don’t remember trouble there either, despite parking in a ‘West Brom’ area.

I was just 20, my bro 17. We went to the game on a special train with girlfriends. There was no indication as to which stand to enter. I remember some Millwall asking "are you trying to take the Cold Blow?". I assume that was the end we were at. We stood towards a corner in that stand. The lads from Fakenham who used to be with us in Churchmans got slowly surrounded by Millwall looking for trouble. I remember one had a Man Utd scarf (a trophy I guess) hung from a big stick like a scalp. We saw the first and third goals... going between those for a leak. One or more pitch invasions later we decided enough was enough. Back at the station ee later found the scoreline. Lads were running across live tube lines to fight each other. They brought the special in on our platform at the same time as a local train. People tried to throw stuff at each other through little draw back windows. It was quite mad.

Mind you we'd already been to Cardiff where the police escorted us back to the station behind rows of double decker buses that were parked to stop bricks and bottles. We had been to Bristol where a mile out of the station on the way home a slab went through a carriage window. Luckily no one was at that seat.

Our cup run was certainly exciting and being young we weren't really afraid. Just careful.

The only game where we were winning I and my then Brother-in-Law left before the end of the game. We were supposed to have been allocated a stand or part of one. We started climbing the steps and saw the ones near the top turn around and started coming back down. As someone else alluded to that bricks were flying about and fights everywhere. We managed to get a spot on one side of the pitch. But we left probably 20 to 25 minutes before the end.
As for games like yesterdays Portsmouth match well you should have seen the Bristol Rovers pitch on that cup run. Like a skating rink covered in snow and a lucky win for Town.

We didn't win the snowy match at Bristol R! We scraped a draw, courtesy of Robin Turner RIP, and won the replay convincingly.

Didn’t go to Millwall but was at Highbury as an 11 year old with my Grandfather and cousin. Also remember the West Brom mob charging at the Town fans and it kicking off behind the Highbury Hill stand after the match! Still have a vision of a longhaired bloke in his 20s barging past me obviously looking for revenge! Stuffed my Town scarf down my coat (for what it was worth)! Quite scary stuff at that age!
By contrast at Wembley remember it all being friendly and good natured banter with Arsenal afterwards!

Four of us went in a car. We parked quite a long way from the ground. I can't remember which stand were in, but there was no segregation. My abiding memory was that the PA announced that if any Ipswich fans felt in danger they could make their way to the front of the stands where they would be escorted to safety. Needless to say, nobody budged!
Everytime we added to the scoreline we cursed rather than cheering!
It was a bit like that to some degree at a lot of away matches in those days so it didn't really seem all that remarkable at the time. Of course in retrospect this was probably a bit worse than usual. We were unscathed, and survived.

Not over dramatised, I was there I’m my mid twenties and entered the ground with 30 friends. Each one said we would never break up, easy said than done. On entering the stands within minutes we were all separated . I was the only one who witnessed the scenes after mingling with Millwall fans, has to put on an angry face as Ipswich battered them on the field. Never cheered one goal, don’t think that has ever happened before. All of my mates had scattered to London Bridge, back to the railway station and anywhere that was safe. On the way back to the station Millwall had lined the streets asking many people what the time was, anyone answering back in a Suffolk accent was given a beating….funny how you quickly pick up a cockney accent.
My Father who had served in the Navy in World War II reckoned he had faced the Germans and had never been so frightened.

Correct, you have bought memories back to me.
Even on the station waiting for the train back to Suffolk, the Millwall fans were still fighting.
Mate up mine ended up in Norwich Prison for defending himself and laying out this Millwall fans. Two tier policing has been going on for quite a while 😂😂😂😂

Yes. A display by the police dog team (or even the mounted police) might have been more appropriate.

Personally, I actually had a worse time with Millwall a year or two later. Went to Luton v Millwall with a Luton supporting friend and a couple of other mates. Well, we got cornered and it got very messy, finishing up in A&E while they patched up my away with the fairies mate instead of watching the game at Kenilworth Road.

The staff there treated us as absolute scum and whistled up a policeman who treated us the same. We had done absolutely nothing beyond being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Went to one or two games there that got a little frisky. Stoke’s mob were absolutely wrecking a train when we got to the station after the game so we went back into town for a beer for an hour to let them get on with it. Seats throughout the windows, the lot.

Leeds weren’t shy either. They were heeling up the decaying terrace for ammo. Some was aimed at the Luton supporters, some at the goalkeeper who was hopping around dodging missiles. Along with the concrete, incoming included lighters, bottles, tins, coins, anything.

Derby’s old Baseball Ground was an interesting experience, but that’s for another day.

Derby was a bit tasty with the back streets. To lighten the mood, I ended up in the wrong end at Glasgow Rangers. I had a great day. I got drunk without paying for a drink. Hip flasks and cans of Mckewans were the order of the day. They were very appreciative of our style of football. Similarly, Wembley 2000. I ended up in the wrong boozer before the game. I was like a blue dot on a red domino. My shout of Blue Army! as I walked in, drew the response of 'Get that man a pint'. Several pints later, a few of us nearly missed the kick off. TWTD.

Actually there was some trouble at the cup final.
Before the match we were queueing up on the steps to go through the turnstiles when some Arsenal fans walked past and started throwing bricks and stones at us. It didn't last long but it wasn't very nice!

Millwall away that year was the most scary experience I’ve ever had at an away game. Managed to leave unscathed probably around the 70 minute mark. Most of what happened on the day has already been covered on here.
The Barnsley play off final, a group of about ten or so of us had a similar experience, totally outnumbered in the pub by Tyke fans, had a brilliant time drinking with them. Walked to the stadium side by side laughing and singing, the police looked a bit flummoxed by the whole thing.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.
