Bloody forgot to pay the dart charge x 2 after the aborted trip to Portsmouth on Sunday, bollicks. Was meant to do it Sunday afternoon when I got home but obviously slipped my mind and got reminded by it this morning by a story about the Humber Bridge toll booths closing.

Anyone forgot about it this long before and managed to get it paid with no fine?

Dot Gov site not much help and only says ‘you may be fined’ if you forget.

Not even sure if it’ll be 2 x £35 fines should they come or one.

F’sake.

Minimum amount to hold on the account is £15, and if your balance dips below a certain level, they automatically help themselves to another £15.

Suppose the up-side of that is you'll never not pay and therefore get fined.

This doesn't sound right (or you've chosen a bad option). I have my credit card resgistered and they just take £3.50 whenever I cross. There's nothing in an account to draw from/top up.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Open an account, they top it up when the balance falls below a set amount, you get a discount think it is around 20%.

I received a ULEZ fine last year for the Arsenal match whilst parking at Cockfosters … the annoying thing was I knew I had to pay it, logged on to TFL the next morning to pay, and under ‘ways to pay’ it said about setting up AutoPay which I did… thinking it would be paid for at the end of the month automatically… the small print (apparently) says it has to be set up by midnight on the day of travel… my appeal was to no avail which really peed me off as I had blatantly tried to pay …. I was about to reluctantly pay the fine when I found an email from a couple of months before from TFL saying how they were subject of a cyber attack and some TFL users may have had their personal data taken, the email said they would keep customers informed … they didn’t! .. the next email I had from was the fine… I ceased this opportunity, sent a massive rant email on my appeal … they apologised , dropped the fine and didn't ask me to pay the ULEZ charge either!! Small victories!! I hope you get lucky too and find a way out of it!!

I did a few years ago and I opened an account and the crossing fee was taken from that, it is worth a try for the sake of £10, (if the minimum is still that) this has also worked for a few people I have told about this. It also means that you won't have to worry about it in the future, you can add multiple cars to a single account as well.

Just tried that this morning with the £15 and it’s not taken anything Balance still at £15 and saying no recent crossings with my vehicle.

Will give them a ring later now I’ve tried that, I can always close the account and get the £15 refunded anyway.

Will see what they say and if I have to wait for the letters to sort I’ll have to.

Cheers for the advice all.

Update: Received the ‘fines’ through the post today.

Some of you will be pleased to know (and some won’t I’m sure) that I’ve just paid the £7 online, thank god for that.

Thanks for the advice on this and happy that they do give people a chance with this as usually it can be very unfair.

(Was worried for a second as on the second letter it said about paying full whack, but when I put the ref number from the first one in sorted both 2 x £3.50 - laughed at the fact they still add the £3.50 to the fines though)

Well done. I was concerned you were going to have to dock it from Sitters Jr's pocket money, as it might've been him that distracted you from doing it in the first place.

Exactly how it worked out for me when I did the same thing a month or so earlier!

Nice one.

Yep, this is how it works. I have a top up level and the amount to take higher than the minimum as I use the tunnel/bridge sufficiently to not want the risk and hassle of getting fined. We have both cars registered on the account.

You do get a discount and it’s important to remember to change your car details if you change your car! I nearly forgot last time. I’ve found the process has worked quite well for me - so far! Even if it’s a liberty that they rip people off by taking a charge at all.
