And someone suggesting he was just off retiring to Kuwait. The guy is a machine. Hope he does well -as long as no impact on us if course ;)

Agree. Whilst I certainly would have embraced him back I think it was right to move on. But it's a really good signing for Bristol City. Ran the game and basically a midfield masterclass is the vibe from their fans. Impressive given he's not played in so long.

Not remotely the same kind of player. We got Matisuwa who’s arguably our player of the season (and I say this as someone who blo00dy loved Morsy), he’s a big upgrade.

| Morsy doing Morsy thing at Bristol... on 21:52 - Jan 10 with 2720 views | Smoresy | Yeah I was firmly of the view that he didn't lose his pace last season, but rather the pace of the league left him; he's never been a Premier League athlete (nor technician, and no shame in either). I'm impressed to hear he's regained (or retained) his sharpness so quickly though. Difficult for me to hold significant regrets over what came to pass. Matusiwa is an upgrade in some departments and has a better chance at the higher level. Morsy would have provided brilliant depth, probably often started alongside him, but the club didn't want to extend his contract into 26/27 understandably, and so our most influential player had the potential to be our most destabilising if kept against his will. Let's achieve a CM coup ourselves this window please. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

What if he wanted a new challenge? What if he didn’t want to be a squad player? Sometimes it’s best for everyone to move on? Nothing can ever take away what he did for us. How about enjoying that and wishing him well? Just a thought.

One of the reasons why I mentioned it. And he seems like he'd be a great fit in our system. Wouldn't mind him at all.

| Morsy doing Morsy thing at Bristol... on 08:01 - Jan 11 with 1500 views | HighgateBlue | Letting him go for free was the most bizarre transfer decision I've ever seen this club make. Our midfield was hardly in fine fettle at the time. In fact we pretty much didn't have one. And I can't think of any other club which has let a high performing and successful captain go for free when he was still in contract and there was no public story indicating a bust up. Odd what happened in Kuwait, but I wish him all the best, and at this level he is an excellent central midfielder. | | | |

Why bizarre? I thought the club did right by Morsy. The alternative was to keep a player here as a back up who might not have wanted that role. If he didn’t, why would you hold a player back from earning a lot of money at his age in Kuwait or wherever he went? If he did want to stay and was booted out, that is a different matter. Is there any evidence of that? I’d have loved him to stay maybe in a player/coach role. But then I don’t know what he’s like or what his ambition is. What I do know is that he’s managed the latter part of his career well and delivered the goods for us. I hope he gets a warm welcome should he play in 10 days time and leave it at that. Taking the emotion out of it, Sam does not represent the future. Matusiwa plays a similar position but is a better player. He may or may not be able to play in the Premier League. We know for certain that despite being the best of a joke midfield last season that level is beyond Morsy, especially now.

…to get an appropriate transfer fee for your club captain who was in contract, rather than let him walk away for nothing only to end up playing against us 6 months later. As the previous post said absolutely bizarre decision making. I wonder if Fulham will let us have Tom Cairney for free?

Sam might not represent the future but nor does Wilson who we are targettting. Morsy would in my view, have been exactly the type player we need as backup in the midfield to help get us over the line this season, as potentially Wilson would be. No, we made a big mistake in letting him go and for not resigning him. He's now gone to one of the darkhorses in this division as well we might find out in a couple of weeks.

Did we know he’d be playing against us six months later? Should we have prevented a player that had done so much for us from moving to a place where he could have earned a lot of money at the end of his career? Did we beat him out of the door against his will? We are dealing with real people here, not names in a computer game. The club has made plenty of poor decisions but at the time (and that’s what matters), releasing Morsy to pursue a lump of £ at the end of his career was not one of them.

…we should have “prevented” him from leaving. But letting him go for nothing made absolutely no sense to anyone other than him and the buying club. Some of us said that at the time and now that he’s back playing in the same league it just magnifies the ridiculous business decision. Sentiment shouldn’t come into it and it definitely won’t when he’s clattering into our players when we play Bristol City.

I was about to say the same. I genuinely think he wanted and perhaps needed, a fresh start and a new challenge. I can't imagine myself rejoining my old employer after I changed jobs 14 months ago.

The £11M is paid in installments, not one lump sum.

Indeed. People are acting like there was a big queue of clubs wanting to pay seven figures for him and we just ignored them and let him go for free. The only concrete offer on the table was from Kuwait FC and they could afford to make him a life changing offer partly on the basis that they wouldn't have to pay a fee. If we ask for a million quid from them the deal for Morsy disappears and you wind up with a disgruntled club captain for the sake of what is in the grand scheme of things (and after the agent and Morsy have had their cut) not very much money. There were a lot of factors for the club (and player) to consider and real life is far more complex than Football Manager, sadly.
