Who will we get? Simply have to get someone more capable than what we already have up top. Will be a huge failure to not get someone better than what we already have.

How realistic is that though? If we were going to spend shedloads on proven top quality goalscorer you’d have thought that deal would already be done. Plus we’ve had proven top quality goalscorers here all along with Sammie and Akpom, do there’s no guarantee anyone translates form into this team.

Who do you class as better than we have, and who will join a championship team?

I'm still confused if fans want a striker or a guaranteed goal scorer. Based on 2 moaning minnies coming out of the ground on Sat, they want a guaranteed goal scorer 'we need someone who will guarantee us 20 goals a season'.
So that's Harrland or Keane, and I really don't see either leaving City or Munich for Town.
Akpom's record in this league would say he will score.

People talk about Piroe but look at the facts, he had scored a lot and then joined Leeds. First half of the season he struggled to score, Leeds fans were even calling for him to be dropped. 2nd half of the season his scoring improved. He has said he struggled to settle it at Leeds initially. Would Town fans be happy if he joined and it again took him half a season to settle in before he really starts scoring?

Not saying we shouldn't get in another striker, but again what do fans want a striker and/or a guaranteed 20 goals a season striker, as from what I've seen its divided 50/50.?

Pretty much whoever we get in at this late stage is going to look like a panic buy frankly.

Given that it was obvious last March we would need to replace Delap our failure to adequately do so has really exposed some recruitment issues at the club. Azon was a gamble and hijacking Akpoms deal with Birmingham at the last minute has always looked very much like a panic decision to me.

A part of me wants another striker, I do think we need one.

I appreciate there may be other areas we are short in, but I think striker is a priority

Fingers crossed

I think this is the interesting observation.

We don't play football that focuses our high quality goal scoring opportunities on our lone striker. KM clearly and evidently sets us out so that goals can be scored by 'all' of the front four.

Now, there is a lot to be said for the fact that the 'left' has provided those goals this season, but the right and the central attacking midfield role far less so than in other seasons.

Yes, it would be good to have a striker that is more clinical but we actually play in a way the requires goals from all of those four and the right has been poor in delivering those, worse maybe than the striker and central attacking midfielder?

Likely scenarios :- Striker we have been pursuing for a while who is a real coup = 5%, Striker who smacks of last minute desperation deal = 45%, No one = 50%.

Many times the investors have come out and said we can make x amount available if we think theres someone out there to improve the squad. For me with hiw the campaign is going, today we take that big cash injection and invest.

Minutes played this season...

Hirst 1,515'
Azon 910'
Akpom 846'
Szmodics 714'

We're over 30 games into the season (including cup games), and 3 of our 4 strikers have barely scraped up to 10 games worth of minutes on the pitch, and the other seems to have gone backwards after having to play second fiddle to Delap last season.

I think the profile of a big No.9 that has worked for us in the past has been less effective this season, as so many teams set up to park the bus and hit us on the break (even Boro did that to us at home); in games like that, we'd be better off with a No.9 with clever movement to drag defenders out of position, better awareness to find space in tight areas, and get shots or passes off quickly. I'm surprised Akpom and Szmodics haven't been trusted with more game time as a No.9 in those type of games, as I think they're both better at that than both Hirst and Azon.

You make a valid point about our right hand side.

The bottom line here is we’ve spent £30 million+ on our right but are currently relying on a guy coming back from an ACL injury because the replacements aren’t panning out. That’s a bit harsh on Sindre who has obviously been acquired with future potential in mind but it’s the situation we are in right now!

What annoys me the most, is that we haven’t just had January to fix this. We’ve own since April that Delap would 100% be leaving and that AAH wasn’t good enough to step up. Ali was always going to leave and so Azon took his place in the squad. We’ve created this problem ourselves by not signing another striker in the summer. Instead we wasted (strong, I know) resources on signing two right backs when we already had a PL experienced RB in the squad, and the best part of £30m on two right wingers who have failed to make any sort of impact.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we’ve known this is an issue for the best part of a year now.

And yet we have 2 strikers who have a combined 27 big chances missed. Kind of suggest that we do play football that creates chances for our striker...

Indeed, Sindre is settling in and that is very much to be expected. I don't doubt that he'll come good.

But ultimately, we are not scoring enough from three of the four attacking positions. So, yes, a more clinical striker is important but that we need to be converting/ scoring from from those other positions as well.

No other team in the position we are in with our spending power would go through this window without upgrading the dross we have up front.. fact.

Piroe is better than what we have now.. so get him in if he's all thats available.

Its longer than a year, we never signed another striker in summer 2024 after chasing Broja for 2 months. We've needed an upgrade on Hirst for 18 months.

'Quite deadline day expected at Portman Road'.

At this stage seems unlikely, no whispers or mumblings, and we are down to the final 10 hours, have hardly been linked strongly with any real number 9 all window.

Don't hold out much hope for anymore than a panic signing late in the day.

The way I see it is we dont seem to play with the hope/expectation on our strikers actually scoring the gaols.
That said, when gifted a 1 on 1, on the edge of the box, at home, in a game we really needed to win, you'd like to have a striker that will hit the target at the very least.
Sure I saw a stat kicking about where Hirst currently has a 14% conversion rate this season, that reads particularly poor to me

My point is that it's not focused on that sole position. Clearly we create opportunities - as we saw Saturday with Hirst have a one really big chance to score and a couple of other decent chances as well.

KM is clear that he wants all of those attacking positions to deliver - what's evident is that the right hand side has hardly any goals or even scoring chances. The left is converting really well and the two central aren't.

A striker that is more clinical (without losing what Hirst delivers and Azon to degree off the ball) but we need to be better at creating and scoring more widely.

Saturday was interesting....the right was largely ignored wasn't it - Burns involved a bit in the first half half, same with Egeli in the second - everything was down that left and whilst that is where our goals come from - it's a touch easy to defend as it's a bit one dimensional.

Ivanovic or Vipotnik are just two names I'd be happy to sign. No guarantees but trying is enough for me. It's why I'm not critical of the Akpom signing. It hasn't worked out but I can at least see what we were/are trying to do. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Is it a massive day though?
I suspect it is for some people here rather than the club.
If we see no signings today is the season written off?

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

We either sign a striker or accept automatic promotion is very difficult to achieve - albeit not impossible. Would just mean Hirst form improving immediately and Azon actually backing up his good hard work with goals.

For me, yes. Hirst is seriously out of form, Akpom isn't favoured and it's too much of a burden to expect Azon to carry. We need to try something to help us convert more of our chances. If we don't, as it stands, it appears to be play offs at best. And whether we have enough to get over the line against fellow play off teams is a big question too - unless it's Coventry!
