*IF* we go up…. 19:16 - Feb 2 with 2761 viewsMatt_Netherlands

It will be in spite of our recruitment, not because of it. And it would be the first time in three promotions that would be the case.

That can’t even be argued with.

How much of that 'shocking business' did you call out at the time? There was a lot of support and excitement for the signings of Szmodics, Akpom, Cajuste and Egeli. Did you buck the trend or is this all hindsight?

Ok will try and answer that the best I can from memory

Szmodics - thought he was not suited as a striker to Ipswichs system and so it proved. However I can see that he was more suited to playing on the break in the PL
Akpom - didn't know much about him but was concerned he was being seen as a 10
Cajuste - I'll admit I thought he was absolutely going to smoke this league, hands up on that one
Egeli - seemed a lot of money to pay for a young kid but was excited by the signing. Don't think anyone can argue he has underwhelmed but that is indeed hindsight.

I'll add I was also extremely gutted we signed Mcateer, especially for so much money as I'm a Leicester fan and knew Ipswich were getting absolutely taken to the cleaners. Got a load of abuse on here from the usual crowd for saying it of course but it's proven to be absolutely right.

Anyway it's not about what I think. I'm not paid to make these decisions and don't have access to the same resources and data they all do so it's a bit of a straw man argument you're making here

But McKenna's not a player. And if you admit that he's an excellent coach, then he can clearly coach those currently not performing to people's expectations, to perform better.

To be honest, I'm completely baffled by some of the threads and opinions on the site tonight.

The point is we could be doing so much better if the standard of player identification and recruitment matched the standard of McKenna's coaching.

Isn’t life all about hindsight? That’s about like me saying every time you’ve bought a lottery ticket you’ve stupidly wasted the money because you haven’t won, but at the time you pick numbers because you believe they’ll come up.

We are allowed to criticise transfers that don’t work out.

Are you one of the people who automatically downvotes any remote form of criticism towards the club? Great input to the debate though, thanks for coming.

Exactly this!

In the summer even after Omari, Delap and Tuanzebe left, we had a really strong squad, a top coach and a transfer budget bolstered by parachute payments and some massive fees that came in. If our recruitment was better then we’d be clear at the top of what is proving to be a fairly bang average standard championship season. As it is, too many signings haven’t hit the standard we need and we are caught in the play off mix as it stands.

Why is it a bang average Championship season?

That doesn't make any sense.
You can fairly argue that if we miss promotion it will because of our transfer policy but if we get promotion it is because of the team we have collated

Completely illogical. If we go up with this squad it’s exactly because we recruited them. Cant be argued with!!

It's probably the easiest thing to argue with that I've ever seen on this board.

It's a serious question. The fact that there are no runaway leaders means that there are a lot more clubs less average than usual. Right?

It’s the recruitment team that needs looking at. Where is this database Ashton has been banging on about for 4 years now ? It must be up and running in all that time. We recruited that guy from Man Uniteds recruiting team. Look at their strategy in recent years,it’s been a mess. Look at ours,it’s a mess too.

If we go up it will mean that we are one of the top two sides in the division and that our recruitment has been spot on. Mission accomplished.

If we don’t, then perhaps revisit the discussion about recruitment.

We have purchased every player in the squad. Apart from Baggott, who doesn't play. Whatever we do is entirely because of the players we have recruited in.

Probably can and will be argued with should we go up, having recruited a team to get us promotion.

You could spend a billion £ to promoted from the Vanarama on goal difference - guessing there is a point where promotion alone doesn’t justify resources spent.

The sum of the parts.

It would paper over the mistakes, we can make a whole new set of signings, the money is that huge.

But it is a good point - we are well below the sum of our parts. A manager on champions league money, hundreds of millions spent on players .

We don’t look like a team with those quaitied if we’re honest, or even close., it’s a valid point.

But then £150 million plus another parachute payment if relegated.., you can buy a lot of awful £12 million players for that - more from the WBA archives and EFL team of the season.

There’s a lad at Derby, Sammie Smokes Sticks - 15 goals from January to May, must be worth a £15 million punt : )
