That's the problem. She can't seem to get round the fact she's not very good and she's not very likeable.

The nature of some of the criticism probably doesn't help. Yes, she's pretty dreadful, but some of the criticism crosses a line into misogyny and racism. From that point, it's probably very easy for someone to discount any legitimate criticism on the basis that it's only being said because she's a black woman.

Blimey. I don’t know what the feud is about and don’t really care, but telling her she’s lucky and entitled because she’s black* is certainly a bold view. Edit - he may be right, but bold and brave nonetheless! *even if he hides behind the term EDI [Post edited 10 Feb 14:07]

It maybe the case, though we don't know, that those at ITV, BBC and Sky et al haven't had that simple conversation with her (about her not actually being a good commentator) and showed her how/ where she could improve etc. Because, typically, these are conversations no one likes to have those chats.

She could still be a really good commentator and pundit and not be likeable - likeability is irrelevant here. Viewers are happy to watch a commentator/ pundit they dislike if what they are saying is credible, insightful etc. There are a lot of pundits I don't like, I still watch and listen to them.

I certainly think he's been bold. But have a look at the context in order to understand the point he's trying to make. I'd like to think most football fans these days are actively anti-racist, and supportive of the women's game (on a spectrum of somewhat to very). Yet I think the majority think that Eni has misjudged this debate somewhat. Especially in repeated and unprovoked digs at Ian Wright, who is (a) black, (b) a supporter of the women's game and women pundits, (c) entertaining, (d) a decent bloke, and (e) very experienced at a high level of football (and indeed through lower levels too!) I make no comment on Eni's playing, punditry or experience. I just think she's come out swinging in the wrong direction, has misjudged the mood in the room, and need not be attacking an ally. I have no idea the extent to which DEI initiatives have advanced her career, whether on account of her being black or female. I suspect possibly not terribly much actually. After all, on paper she presents as being well-qualified and intelligent. That probably got her a reasonable amount of respect at the start of her punditry career but I think she may be squandering that respect now and not coming across as terribly likeable. Not on the grounds of race, and not on the grounds of gender. Other than the DEI point I think that Jordan makes some points that will rightly garner some support. I want so much to be on the side of someone who was unnecessarily attacked by Joey Barton, whose views on females generally appear to be pretty offensive, and possibly even deliberately so. But I think in the current debate she's taken a misstep.

The fundamental crux of it is that she is moaning about male pundits on women's football as a person who benefitted from being parachuted into TV positions in the male game that her talent (as either a footballer or a pundit) didn't justify. She has not just bitten off the hand that was feeding her but created a three-course meal out of it.

Good points. It does seem a strange fight for her to pick. I’ve always assumed she ended up commentating and punditing because she was at the top of the game for so long. If TV companies can continually employ the likes of Merton and Shearer, things like ability are obviously lesser considerations.

| The latest stuff with Eni Aluko on 18:08 - Feb 10 with 165 views | Dubtractor | How on earth has this become news again? Some of what she says has merit, but she comes across as having no humility at all, doesn't reflect well on her at all. And fundamentally, she's not a good pundit, albeit that hasn't stopped plenty who played at the top of the men's game having a career in punditry. Paul Merson probably being the most outstanding example. | |

He did not look at her the whole time he was speaking. Not sure what that tells us, but if you are saying stuff like that, have the decency....

Shearer may be a bit of a fool ,but be fair he doesn’t come anywhere near close to Merton. Why sky play up to him I have no idea. My pet gripe is Danny Murphy , Mr Charisma himself.
