Even if you say there should be clear daylight, or the attacker should be given a certain distance to benefit, you’re still going to have the lines out to measure it.

It sucks and something needs changing. But to play devils advocate, it's consistent to the rules (as sucky as they are). Although in this scenario, players with longer noses would be at extremely small disadvantage lol. |
Having thought about it, I think that you’re right.
Goal line technology will say ‘no goal’ if just 1mm of the ball stays in front of the goal line so I guess it’s the same principle for offside.

The issue I think I have, if not most people, is the consistency of it all. You can have 2 games at 3pm, that both have the same contentious handball decision and in one game it gets given as a penalty and the other game it doesn’t. | |

I can never remember this sort of outrage 10-15 years ago if someone’s nose was ‘offside’ and if wasn’t given as offside though.

Football is a lot quicker now - in comparison to nowadays, football in the 70s looks like it’s played at walking pace.

I'm wondering if VAR should only be used to correct decisions that the referee/linesman actually give. For example, if the linesman doesn't flag for offside, then offside isn't checked by VAR. But if the linesman does suspect an offside, he waits for the game to play out (as they do now, and unless it's ridiculously obvious) then raises his flag, and then it'll be checked.
Same with handball, if a player handles it, but the officials don't call it, tough. But if the ref blows up for it then it's checked.
Red cards for seriously foul play perhaps should stand as-is.

If you are offside you are offside. Have you ever been an AR at any sort of level? Sometimes it’s very hard. If someone’s nose is a problem you need another interpretation - hip or ankle or something. No matter what is used it will always upset someone.
Same with ball over the line. AR must be in line with second last defender - shot from 25 yards hits the crossbar and bounces on/over the line - whelp. Goal line tech to the rescue (Lampard World Cup v Germany anyone?).
It’s Laws of the Game not rule book because laws are to be interpreted. Hence one ref gives handball and another doesn’t. Law five paraphrased - the ref is right when they are wrong, don’t like it don’t step onto the pitch to play. There’s an element that says we are here because people complained too much about refs being little dictators - perhaps the needed to be full on megalomaniacs? |  | | |
