For the first time this season I don’t think we’ll get top two. 15:32 - Mar 9 with 3592 viewsghostofescobar

I’ve felt fairly comfortable for most of the season that we’d get the 2nd auto spot, but that’s evaporated. Boro and cov don’t look like they are going to slip up now. Incredibly tough April ahead. Fixtures piling up. Still not finishing teams off when we are playing well enough to beat them. More away games than home left to play (4 home, 7 away). Maybe I’m being overly negative. Monday blues (excuse the pun) perhaps. Give me reasons to stop being a negative ninny!

We have though. Over each of our last five games (since mid-Feb) we've gained two points on them. If that happens over the remaining fixtures and we win or draw our game in hand then we'll finish above them.

We've picked up 2 points more than Boro over the last 6 games but we are still 5 points behind them,

Your post reads as though we have gained 10 points

I genuinely don't know if we will get top two, but I've always been confident that we can and still am. Some (not yourself as this is the first time you've expressed doubts) are incredibly quick to write off any chance of us getting top two whenever things don't go our way and yet still we have it in our hands.

For all that we have had disappointing results like Saturday, so have Middlesbrough and Coventry. Who knows what will happen over the next couple of months? Certainly not me. But I'll take this over what we used to have a few years ago when the season was over by this stage.

We absolutely can still get a top 2 spot, but I've not expected it for a while now. We'll only get it if we see quite a big uptick in consistency (which sounds crazy given our PPG over the last few months; but actually it's credit to Cov & Boro for doing even better (or doing enough to hang on above us!)

PO's will be interesting - I'm pretty confident that over two games we can beat any of the other teams. The final is a lottery tbh!

Over 34 games we're top 2 ahead of Boro - albeit on GD. That's a pretty good indicator over most of the season that we can absolutely be in the mix over the last 10/11 games. Beat Boro I I believe we take 2nd.

How the feck have you read my post as saying we've gained 10 points on them when it clearly says we've gained 2 points on them over the last 5 games? It's fine to admit you're wrong mate, especially when it's on something factual. You can hold the opinion that you don't think we'll catch them but saying we've not gained on them over the last 5 games just isn't true.

You inserted the word each which makes it wrong. You could read it as 10 points over 5 games or 5 lots of 5 games where we have gained 2 points in each block (which would be 10 points over 25 matches - it is actually 6 points). You need to remove the word each from your post that they have replied to.

The thing is if it wasn’t for a dodgy teg and some last ditch blocks we would be in a great spot. Even then it’s still in our hands the boro game will be huge

If we don’t, playoffs it is. Should be nothing to fear there cos there’s no way we could lose at Wrexham three times in a season.

No but we could lose to them 4 times.

Our poor start, and their ridiculous start, is the only reason we aren't already clear of Boro: https://www.twtd.co.uk/league-

Unfortunately, games in August count as much as all the rest of them…

Our fast start in 23/24 was critical. It gave us belief and momentum, and meant we were never playing catch-up.

It’s not nice chasing. I’d rather have the points in the bag than a game in hand, but it looks like what I like doesn’t matter if we end up playing our game in hand in the last week. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

Well yeah, I don't think anyone is saying August doesn't count. We had a disrupted month and disjointed start and it cost us. But over a sustained period now we've outperformed Boro and if we continue to do that over our last 11 games there's a good chance we finish above them.

Spot on, yet we had some usually sensible posters on here batting off the the early season results as if they didn’t matter, along with the less sensible ones who argued no one should look at the table until the end of September as it was utterly meaningless.

We've got KM.

This is where we put the hammer down.

I thought our second half reaction was excellent on Saturday.

It's always been a race between the end of the season and KM getting time to coach a new team.

It's tight but we are going to do it.

Genuinely loving the optimism, but first halves like the one against Leicester (and they’re far from isolated events) have to be eradicated because, as great as KM is, we aren’t winning games after the opposition get the first goal.

If we can start putting together more 90 minute performances rather than relying on these 45 minute fire-fighting rescue jobs with a clump of 60th minute subs, then I’d happily join you in your belief that we’re going back up.

I'm far from certain too, and am beginning to think it'll be the play offs.

However, Boro are not going to win 12 in a row, so they will slip up. It's just a case of how many times and if we can get catch them when they do.

Our fixture pile up is really hurting us though

Pretty sure that Cov & Boro both took 12 points from their first 4 games - while we took only 3, which we blamed on being late getting transfer business done.

We've never really properly caught up that gap and so have been under pressure to stay in touch ever since.

Yeah, first half was disappointing and a return to the sloppiness of earlier in the season.

But I thought we were outstanding in the second. Perhaps even the best we've been this season. You play that 45 minutes 10 times and we score 2 or even 3 goals virtually every time. That little bit of luck deserted us.

You're right that we've got to start putting it all together now. But I think we will.

I also think KM has thought ahead. The squad strength, the patterns, everyone up to speed - will all begin to pay off.

I also think the team has another gear it can go to. Felt that on Saturday. When we have to push, we have a lot of firepower now.

Keep the faith. This is where having the league's best manager pays off.

And yet we’re ahead of Boro on GD over the previous 34 games. With a better start to the season we would be up with Coventry, yet despite that not being the case we’re right with Boro, and have been back to mid-August.

Which is the point I’m making.

We’re in 4th place because of our poor start, a poor start that was largely dismissed as unimportant in the great scheme of things by some back at the start of the season.

The goal difference is good but only if you’re on the same points.

If we miss out on autos by 3 or 4 points at the end of the season, it’s that awful start that will have cost us..

It's on a knife edge for me. I thought if we drew at Watford then won the next 5 we'd be in the driving seat, although I must admit I didn't realise how many away games were left.

For me Stoke and Sheff Weds, 2 winnable aways do become must win and that's 5 wins and a draw from 6 so you've basically swapped a draw away at Watford for one at home to Leicester. At that point Cov and Boro start feeling the pressure as we're not going away and the form team and they may well slip up due to that.

Equally, we could well fall agonisingly short with just too many games drawn over the season that could and should have been wins.

Exciting either way so let's enjoy it despite what's at stake.

I didn’t say anyone is batting them off now, but they were back in August and early September when they were actually happening.

That was why I used the past tense..i.e. ‘had some’ not ‘have some’ and ‘argued’ not ‘arguing’

Who’s popped 50p in you tonight, tiger? You don’t need to take every criticism of the team quite so personally.

More points from the early games would undeniably have helped now, although having played one game less than everyone else has an influence on how it looks too. There’s a high probability that we’d be in 3rd, closer to Boro with that game in hand played.

In reality you could highlight many points in the season that could be considered sliding door moments if we miss out by 3 or 4 points. For me Charlton at home springs to mind, Watford at home and Oxford away. How we didn’t get more points from those is hard to take.
