Harsh? Or harsh reality? 9.50 minutes in...

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

My god they are dull to listen to.

They hardly say anything ground breaking, some of it is right. The defending has been a bit sloppy recently, the defending in the Stoke game was poor.

They also talk some nonsense. Game management hasn't been bad all season and they said we have been incapable of mounting a promotion push all season. Which just isn't true.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?

the fact that we've won the last 19 games where we scored first suggests our game management is better than most!

I don't think they understand what game management means. The fellow said something like "their game management's been bad all season because they haven't come from behind to win a game."

I turned it off at that point.

All fair comments imo. So many bad habits starting to form over the past few weeks, bad game management, not coming from behind to win games, shambolic defending.

I think it was Stuart Watson on Kings of Anglia who pointed out that we have conceded 3 goals in 4 of our last away games (Leicester, Sheffield United, Wrexham and Stoke).

The harsh reality is we are still in contention because this is a very poor league. The best run we have put together this season is 6 games unbeaten. The two automatic promoted sides last season, Burnley and Leeds, put together unbeaten runs of 33 games and 16 games respectively.

I've tried to sugar coat it a lot this season, but for the money we have spent and the players we had before that spend, we are are massively underperforming.

We look nothing like a top 2 side trying to get into the Premier League. And if we do go up we are going to need a complete overhaul similar to Sunderland's.

They seem pretty spot on imo. Maybe the game management isn’t always as bad as they make out but the rest of it seems justified.

That's where I am at as well, I was just curious on a temperature check because when people have made similar points on here regarding recruitment or the performance this season they're regularly shot down as being overly negative, when there has been pretty clear trends. Maybe it's better to hear it from outsiders sometimes. I am just hoping we can hang around until the last few games to be honest because April looks a brutally congested stretch.

If we do something that we haven't done all season over the next 6 weeks, I'll be the first to give the team all the credit in the world for it. Here's hoping.

I still think it might be a sneaky low points total for 2nd, like 84 type low, let's see.

I think slightly harsh ,

It’s correct that our defending has been sloppy and the away form / consistency in general isn’t good enough , and the fact we’ve not won from behind yet really accumulates to us underperforming on the whole - I think they were right to question the recruitment too

That said , we were 2 penalty decisions away from winning 6 on the trot this week , albeit in context of poor first half displays

I think the fact we are still in it is largely down to it being a below par championship this year and that’s what makes me think we may end up bundling over the line into second

Boro have to solve their home form problem and I think that will prove difficult and could derail them , Millwall I know have been impressive but I could see them falter .. by all accounts they did well to hang on v Derby

It’s going to be a massive challenge but we do have the talent … if Philogene and Nunez come back and reach the level , we’ve a huge chance . Mehmetti showing signs of settling in too , and that’s not mentioning Clarke , Burns, Egeli etc

I think / hope we do it in the most underwhelming way possible 😂

Also when you think two fairly bang average teams are likely to go, that obviously gives us a much greater chance to establish!

It's a big few months for this club.

Lots of us have been saying the same for months. It is a massive failure in recruitment across multiple windows in my view but if we go up (and I still think we will) then all is forgiven and we move on with a totally different side.

Much was fair I thought, not least on the game itself. We were fortunate until we were robbed, by a decision that VAR wouldn't overrule every time. Stoke should have scored more prior to that incident and their keeper had another game to forget.

Two comeback leads isn't enough, then both unravelled in chaotic fashion. The criticism re investment vs return is surely valid, difficult as it is to be dispassionate on this. We don't perform at our better level for large parts of games. Have we improved on the road since August? W3 D2 L3 from our first eight, +5 GD. W3 D3 L3 from our nine since, -1 GD. Coventry wasn't the turning point we hoped it would be.

Some of it feels less rooted in reality, though. Home excellence since December has compensated for enduring away struggles. We are on the coattails of the two above us. We haven't produced an impressive winning streak, sure, but we must have balanced that out with smaller wobbles, otherwise we'd be further behind. I understand why the man in red is so sceptical but has he got the measure of our competition? Neither convinces either, from what I've seen anyway.

the "smaller wobbles" is key to possibilities of us grabbing an auto spot.

since the first 4 games and the new recruits coming in, we've never gone more than 2 without a win

cf this to:-
millwall (4 without a win twice)
boro (4 without a win, and 3 without a win 3 times)

even cov have had 3 without a win 3 times

at this stage, a run like that would be costly, especially with the games coming thick and fast

But it is also true that, no matter how the game has gone to that point, if we concede the first goal we arent going to win the game as we arent able to regain control.

I've been listening to these guys on my commute for the last 3-4 years. Both are Derby fans and respectfully they know their stuff on the Championship.

Ryan Dilkes (the guy with the bigger beard) has been pro Ipswich for a long while now. He tipped us for back to back promotions at the start of the 22/23 season, was a huge fanboy during that season, and in the preview for this year referred to us as the Championship Dream Team and said McKenna is the best Manager that's been in the Championship for 5+ years.

This is actually the first pod this season when his belief in us being automatically promoted has wavered and I find it hard to disagree with anything he said.

I believe he lived in Ipswich for a while for work reasons so he must keep one eye out for us more than people might expect. So his Town knowledge is probably more substantial than the average 'neutral' Championship pundit. There's definitely a soft spot there which if anything probably irritates non-Town fans.

"Stoke should have scored more..." Really? I can't recall when Stoke created any other chances.

Their goals came from two defensive mistakes and a penalty that should never have been given.

We were crap in the first half and our defending was woeful after we took the lead. However, let's not suggest that we were under the cosh and lucky to have escaped with a draw. We should have won that game.
