| Jack Lankester 21:42 - Mar 17 with 3255 views | Cheltenham_Blue | Currently watching him play as a 2nd half substitute for Crewe Alex in league two. Looks nothing like the player we thought he might develop into. Just rather anonymously jogging backwards and forwards around the middle of the park. IIRC there was quite a few people annoyed that we let him go as part of Cooks demolition man summer. Does make you think that maybe some of the players we had probably weren’t good enough to get us out of league one after all. With the obvious exception of Downes. | |

He had almost a season out here. Came back around April in the Covid year I think. Then had a whole season the following year under Lamberk and then Cook. Played 100 odd games for Cambridge after us.

Yes, and just about the worst injury to have as the type of player he was, and as a young one too.

It was shambolic at the time wasn't it? McGoldrick is a prime example. Our best player and most valuable asset and our underfunded medical team/facilities couldn't keep him fit. Criminal really. He took the brunt of it here at the time for not being able to stay fit but considering he is still going strong at 38, the problem clearly wasn't with him. [Post edited 18 Mar 9:44]

| He was outstanding in his breakthrough season for us.... on 09:57 - Mar 18 with 1938 views | Marshalls_Mullet | ....I think this is a case of a serious injury (back related) early in his development that set his career back. Teddy Bishop was similar. What a talent. And then of course Tristan Nydam. | |

Bishop was another. If they would have kept him and McGoldrick fir there was probably 18 million quids worth of income there. We ended up with nothing!

Teddy Bishop was probably the most gifted natural footballer out of the academy, certainly since Ambrose and probably since Dyer. It's nothing short of an embarrassment that we didn't give him the platform to be a PL level player.

Yep, I said similar. This article from back in the day is a good hint towards the hype, but also an early mention of his injury issues, even at that age; https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport "During the first year of his academy scholarship, Bishop picked up a fairly serious back injury which caused him to miss quite a lot of matches and training ground action. That's something for the medical men at any prospective new clubs, but he has certainly looked over it during the current campaign, while McCarthy has vowed to treat him with kid gloves in a bid to not thrust too high a workload on the youngster."

McGoldrick has to take responsibility for that too - he knew the long drive wasn't helping his injuries, but refused to move locally.

Don't be daft, the bloke completed a 90 minutes for Ipswich once? maybe twice? I can't remember, I stopped caring once he left, but he almost exclusively never played a full game. Anyway, good news is that Teddy Bishop is back to full fitness next month.

Regardless of injuries, in my view Bishop was never going to be good enough for the Premier League for two reasons. Size and pace. He lacked both. However, you are right about how gifted he was. Lovely player; a terrific passer of the ball. I liked him. The shame of it was the mess the club and team were in when he broke through here and while I don’t know, I doubt our one man with a WW2 fire bucket and old sponge medical team did him too many favours.

There was talk of a 3 hour commute. Which I guess is each way, so 6 hours in the car a few days a week?! Not helpful.

McGoldrick lived on Bucklesham Road. I know the traffic is bad but it's not a long drive!

Which end? I used to live on Bucklesham Road in the 80's and there seemed to be a few players down there at that time. ....not sure many do now? To be fair, I think DM and MM have mentioned his commute being an issue, so maybe he wasnt at his Ipswich house for much of the week? [Post edited 18 Mar 10:57]

I don't think it's that unusual for players families to not move and the player go up and down on days off, Christophe Berra used to go to Edinburgh every time he had a day off to see his daughter. But McGoldrick lived on Bucklesham Road so wouldn't have done the long drive as much as people were making out, but his wife and kids were back in the Midlands

I understand that its not unusual for families not to move, and that makes sense given what a transient profession it is these days. I was just basing it on what MM had said, but if he had a house in Ipswich, it does suggest more of a weekly / twice weekly commute, rather than almost daily.

Not unusual at all, no - I was under the impression McGoldrick was doing a bonkers commute everyday from the Nottingham area- had seen it mentioned a number of times on here by sensible posters back in the day and no one ever mentioned that he actually had a place in Ipswich.

I did post it a few times; he lived opposite where I worked so I'd see him pulling out most mornings so wasn't picking anyone up or anything like that as was always on his own. Bad planning though, both him and Daryl Murphy were moving house between the 2 legs of the Norwich Play Off semi, presume didn't have much confidence we would make it to them

I remember being a bit surprised one morning when I saw him walking what I assume was his kid to school past my house in Beeston. Assume he still lives round there as I spotted him periodically in the Co-op.
