That’s 2,600 Sheffield Weds fans away at Stoke singing their hearts out after yet another loss in a dreadful season.

Total respect.

Town have the chance to get promoted through an automatic place to the Premier League!!

McKenna will be gone before you know it.

Sing your FECKIN hearts out Monday… be part of it.

Adversity often pulls people together... during the war ( WW2) No one locked their doors, because people all had nothing and were in the same boat. They pulled together. You're seeing similar behaviour now, in the " forgotten war" in Ukraine 🇺🇦...
Sheffield Weds fans have been sunk before the season kicked off. So theres a siege mentality amo gst their fans. Good on em...

WE need to stoke that same passion now, and we'll carry our boys over that line.

Siege mentality doesn't work as well when (to borrow from a Mick Mac phrase) you've got Ashton on the inside pissing in.

I agree. Total respect for them. I’ve always got on well with Wednesdayites.

But sadly support like that won’t happen here. It was always a rare thing but the feeling of togetherness that produces a force is long gone. That was obvious long before last Monday week when for example a centre forward was mocked for being subbed and a keeper was abused in a pre season friendly. The club and its support is utterly divided now.

We have ‘supporters’ who never want us promoted again. We have people that view the club as Ashton and won’t be attending. Others with protests etc etc. you name it.

It’s their choice. Fine. But the consequence is a club divided like this is highly unlikely to be promoted in my view. While as far as I’m concerned the season is done and I can’t wait for the summer, I dearly hope I’m wrong (I often am and will gladly hold my hand up if that’s the case). I’ll be there Monday supporting my team.

I’ll enjoying the performances of players and McKenna's team from the West Stand Thermos Flask section before it and they move on to deservedly better things in the summer.

The idea that wartime Britain was a golden age of unlocked doors and neighbourly solidarity is a comforting story, but it’s largely a myth.

Reported crime in England and Wales rose by nearly 60% between 1939 and 1945. During just four months of the London Blitz, over 4,500 looting cases were heard at the Old Bailey and those convicted included air raid wardens, firemen and police officers. When the Café de Paris took a direct hit in 1941, emergency workers arrived to find well-dressed looters stripping jewellery from the dead and injured.

The “same boat” claim doesn’t stand up either. Bombing fell hardest on working-class urban areas, while the wealthy had country houses and options. The black market thrived precisely because people with money could pay for what others couldn’t get. The evacuation programme laid bare the depth of Britain’s class divisions so starkly that it helped drive the entire post-war welfare state agenda.

The “Blitz Spirit” was real in patches but it was also a deliberate creation of the Ministry of Information, reinforced through Churchill’s speeches, BBC broadcasts and newsreels.

The most honest verdict on whether people felt truly united? The moment the war ended, they voted Churchill out in a landslide. That’s not the behaviour of a nation that felt it had all been in it together.

I have to disagree with that.

As someone else said, adversity on the pitch often brings people together. That's why there was so much unity with the fans towards the team during the relegation year. Lambert pointed it out as not normal, but it was. Sheffield Wednesday fans were certainly not unified behind the team when they were battling to get out of League One, and expecting more. Same with Leeds fans in 2023/24. Perceieved underachievement brings tension, and that's before we get into the political situation the club has found itself in.

I remember that (or words to that effect) but not the poster.

Think the poster said that they’ll be happy with continuously being mid-table champ alongside a good cup run every now-and-then.

I remember that too, now it's been mentioned. It was recent, due to the Farage fallout, they'd rather be midtable League One but Ashton free rather than in the Premier League with Ashton at the helm.

You make a good point, but the dislike and hostility towards the players, manager and recruitment bods precedes last Monday week. It’s why the atmosphere has been flat for too many games (see Charlton, Preston comments) and why the trolley-wetting rage on here has emerged after defeats draws and narrow wins.

It’s far worse than Lamberks dismal team or anything I can remember with this club. No team stands a chance with that. I stand by what I said and dearly hope I’m wrong.

I think, with Lambert's team, there was this feeling that things were what they were, and there was little hope. It's hope which powers dissent when things don't work out. Whilst it certainly doesn't match 2023/24 for the feelgood factor, I'd still say the atmosphere has been better than the Cook era which had similar issues - decent turnover and big spending, relatively speaking, not leading to expectations being matched on the pitch. Obviously it was much worse then than it is now.

I think there's an element of on field feeding off field, and we haven't really hit expectations this year, which has led to questions being asked and tensions rising. Human nature of remembering the past, and therefore the promotion winning players, fondly and possibly being better than they are (with no criticism intended) - especially when the season doesn't panned out as... that word again... hoped.

That's the thing for me though if you can't support with head and heart then perhaps it's best not to go for now. Leaving my seats empty for this game is all I've got but it's something, the only thing tempting me is to join a heart felt Ashton Out chant after the game but my faith in people doing the right thing is decreasing by the day and year in all areas of life.
Now if you'll excuse me I need to go somewhere quiet and cry harder...lol.

That old “everyone was lovely and pulled together” during WW2 was a bit of a myth according to my late Mum. She worked in a munitions factory and said there was a lot of pilfering & other less than pleasant behaviour (I think she meant generally, not just or specifically at the factory. I believe there was quite a bit of looting of bombed houses, eg).

Edit - sorry, should have read BSW’s post before writing this!

An interesting article on this

https://aspectsofhistory.com/c

It should be noted that things like the underground were never intended to be used as air raid shelters. The government wanted the tube kept open for business. Shelter provision was woefully inadequate and the poorest left to make their own arrangements.

They did by breaking into the Underground - even where shelter was inadequate it was better than nothing. They did by numbers were so great, the government had to give in.

My dad’s father was a Special Constable in Suffolk during the war. He was kept very busy, apparently.

The base instincts of human beings don’t change over time either. When the plague hit in 1665 those with money who could flee to the countryside did, including religious and medical bods. The plebs were left to rot. Literally.

"We have ‘supporters’ who never want us promoted again."

Do we?

The post was made on 24 March. On up votes/downvotes, 9 people supported it, 19 downvoted it. A minute sample. Funnily enough, it’s a similar ratio, albeit different numbers, to those who wanted McKenna kicked out/stay at the beginning of December.

Tiny tiny samples, but they do indicate this is a club divided which is why I don’t hold out much hope for promotion this season. A pessimistic view and hopefully a wrong one.
