Birmingham lost £34m in their L1 promotion season 14:36 - Apr 8 with 1773 viewstractorboy1978

With a net spend on fees of £21m and a wage bill of £33.7m (£14m higher than ours in our promotion season). This year will undoubtedly look worse. Could be a very different summer for them this year as they've accumulated a squad on big wages without a great deal of 'trading value' that doesn't look like being good enough to get them where they want to be. I can't imagine they are going to have a great deal of maneuverability in the market this summer.

And almost a quarter of their revenue was from their stadium naming rights coming from their own companies.

A few years of championship stagnation will surely derail their 60k stadium plans.

Hope they fall flat on their 6rses (as long as there's still a club at the end of it) – their owners steamed into this season thinking they'd break the Championship and it just so happens that it isn't especially easy for anybody. If they don't go up next year I think they'll have a problem.

It could work the other way in that minimal turnover of players could lead to a greater understanding and connections on the pitch, like us in the Championship promotion.

I’m sure they’ll be able to cook the books Chelsea style or slip a little envelope or two to the right people.

I can already hear Fred Dibnah honking his horn as those chimneys collapse.

I wasn't convinced by their summer dealings tbh, so not too surprised it hasn't worked out.

Shame.

Oh, don't worry, as someone who knows the career of that stadium designer Thomas Free very, very well, the stadium as shown in those renders, with those chimneys, will never be built.

They bossed that league so you could argue money will spent and will comfortably stay up this year. They may have to stagnate for a bit but as Wrexham are finding out double promo to the prem is not an easy task. I'd suggest it will be a long time before a team emulates that which is why those players are loved so much by us.

I'd suggest from a financial perspective they cannot afford to 'stagnate for a bit'.

It'll be Lincoln giving it the big one over the summer! We've given promoted sides a dream after 24'. As you say, Brum and Wrexham now seeing the realities of this division. Even after seeing the 70's teams, the Cup, 81', etc, those 5 days from Cov to Huddersfield and waking up on the Sunday thinking 'That actually happened', is my happiest ITFC moment.

Same, I hope they fall ar5e over tit too. Horrible place to both visit and to work.

Fans have this weird notion that they are better than or on a par with Villa, but the respective trophy cabinets say differently but they genuinely thought that this season they would, 'do an Ipswich', with apparently no sense of how big an achievement that is for any club.

Awful club.

I remember a lot of people being up in arms that we weren't in for Kyogo at close to £10m for a 30+ striker coming off a not great spell in France. He's managed one goal in 28 appearances.

Their net spend this summer was north of £20m after a similar level of net spend in League 1. They haven't had a good return on investment at all. That kind of spending is insane at this level without parachute payments, it's not sustainable. They rolled the dice on double promotion and have come up well short.

From what I saw on Monday they have spent their money on a lot of endeavour and physicality but not an awful lot of quality.

Exactly this.

Really difficult team to play against, but hugely lacking in genuine quality.

Yeah, they competed hard and managed to make the game scrappy and broken. Same first game of the season as well. But there's very little genuine quality there and barely anyone with any resale value. Stansfield is probably their main asset but they're not recouping what they paid for him any time soon, let alone making a profit.
