Are the pessimists allowing a little optimism now? 16:54 - Apr 12 with 3539 viewsDubtractor

Not intended to dig anyone out, as I get that some of us are more inclined to pessimism than others, but would be interested to hear the thoughts of some of those who have talked down our chances all season.

You're concerned they will win all their games and we'll lose or draw all ours, pretty much.

Get some money on that Heathers ba.

I don't think we'll lose or draw all of ours but think Southampton could give us a scare for sure.

I do fear Tuesday may be a defeat as this often happens to teams after a big win but so long as we beat Boro all will be good.

It'll be two games in hand after they play their next two, before we play Boro on the Sunday.

Ah sorry, yes, two games in hand after they place Swansea.

I don’t think I’ve been pessimistic, just simple more just balanced based on what I was seeing. The squad felt a bit unbalanced and was taking longer to gel than I’d hoped.

I honestly didn’t think we had a chance of automatic promotion when Coventry and Boro were flying, especially after watching us away at Oxford in November. We looked so disjointed and like we’d concede every time a team went forward.

I’m not sure what’s changed, but suddenly the players and fans feel aligned. The players look like they care more, or at least they’re showing it and they’re defending like their lives depend on it. That’s definitely won me over these past few weeks.

Still plenty to do, but I’m hoping for 6 points this week. I’ll be back in the country on 21st and straight to Charlton on the 22nd… hopefully to see us get promoted.

Here’s to hoping anyway.

Everytime I have become overly optimistic this season we have pulled out a performance that has been dissapointing such as Sheff Utd, Wrexham etc. So I will continue to watch each game at a time

Definitely more optimistic now.

But I think the constructive criticism has been justified this season. I think most of us will agree that generally the performances have been poor.

I still think we're 'lucky' that Boro have dropped so many points recently and Saints started the season so poorly. If either of those things hadn't happened, we wouldn't be in the position we're in and fans would still be critical/pessimistic.

As a pessimist I still see the game on Tuesday being huge. Win it and I will feel a lot more confident but should we lose there is a scenario where Southampton could be level with us on points before we next play against Middlesbrough. If this happened then the pressure would really be on us going into the Boro game.

Jeez, I had been feeling very optimistic, but after reading that I'm scared , it seems entirely possible!
Hopefully the issue gets put to bed with a responding win at Portsmouth.

I'd just like to say I don't agree that generally the performances have been poor.

Also, if you're going to change the narrative and say 'what if Boro hadn't dropped so many points and Saints started better' then you have to apply that to everyone... so 'what if Town had started better?' comes into that.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

The problem for me has been a lack of consistency within games. We seem to doze off at times. Doesn't mean "generally the performances have been poor" throughout.

It's a valid criticsm though and one swallow does not a summer make. Hell, we were sloppy in possesssion on Saturday despite our excellent defending (from the front) meaning Nodge didn't lay a glove on us.

As Jerseys says, we started the season sh1te as well. As for Boro, well they've been fooked by injuries and poor form. We've got parachute payments so can afford a better squad. Unfair, but we've had to endure that so many tiomes from other clubs I'm not going to start crying about it on behalf of Boro. Their manager seems to have lost the plot as well, something you can't imagine McKenna doing.

It's an utterly incredible stretch to suggest a team that is now overwhelming favourite for second place, and averaging exactly two points a game since the end of August, has been "poor".

You misunderstand what constructive criticism means.

Is there anything I'm missing from this bullet list?

no leadership
can't defend
no plan B
no resilience
no desire
no team spirit
no running towards adversity
team of individuals
poor recruitment

I can't believe we sacked off Woolfy, Burgess, Broady and Chappers for that shower of sh*t. We're 10 games in now, this isn't bedwetting. Something is wrong at our club.

And still pick up points without putting a mega winning run together, and quite frankly without really moving through the gears. Machine like, some would say.

Maybe it's simply a comparison with two years ago.

It takes a wee bit of time to build team spirit. There's been big churn the last two seasons. Norwich win was massive because it's really cemented that spirit and hopefully a stronger bond with the wider fanbase.
