I would take the gamble 18:09 - Apr 25 with 2359 viewsgtsb1966

and put out a team Tuesday that includes anyone who isn't going to start against QPR. The players are knackered. A week off for most and come back refreshed for the big one. Controversial I know as nothing is guaranteed but I honestly think thats our best chance of securing promotion.

There isn't much of a chance to switch the defence, but the front six has possibilities.

Neil - Cajuste
Egeli - Akpom - Clarke(?)
Hirst(?)

It would be controversial, though.

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

It's Southampton, not Manchester City in their pomp. They will be equally knackered, having a schedule padded with FA Cup fixtures. We've beaten Coventry, Hull, Derby and Norwich on the road this season, four of our seven matches against the top nine. Why is defeat seen as somehow inevitable?

Playing second choices and kids against the Saints, inviting a loss, only gives them momentum and piles pressure upon our last game.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Argument for it. The back to back mid weeks are unprecedented. Some of them must be running on fumes. No minutes for Neil or Johnson today.

Not sure you can at this stage though.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

I think we will. Keep the back four and keeper, swap all the rest for 60/70 and if we are still level then go for it late on.

Problem is if we make the suggested changes and draw or lose to saints followed by anything other than a win against qpr. We are opening ourselves up to losing out on top 2

Think we really have to treat each on its own merit and i trust km with whatever changes he makes

Would be a combination of arragonace and defeatism.

Arrogance to assume we'll brush aside QPR and defeatist to think we can't beat Southampton.

3 away games in 6 days is obscene for the squad (and traveling fans) to deal with but not sure we can or should sack it off and focus just on QPR. Strong performance Tuesday could be enough and saints should be as knackered as us.

Exactly. Get the players fresh for the play-offs. Southampton will be as fresh as a daisy.

Absolutely not. We’re stumbling towards the line already.

We have the opportunity to nail it down against Southampton. Go full pelt and finish the job. If we don’t do it, we get a second chance next weekend.

Do you think we went fell pelt today? Looked like two teams were happy with a draw.

It’s not six days though. Robsons team played 66 games in the season they won the UEFA cup, beat the league champions (Villa) 3 times. There wasn’t the luxury of six subs back then to bring on. Pretty much the same 11 every week. Russell Osman didn’t miss a match. They really shouldn’t be running on fumes with all the modern science they have around them.

Also, knowing that there’s only 2 games left to nail it down in the regular season could in itself impart the adrenaline which gives that edge of extra energy.

And they’d dread an additional 2 or 3 more, physically, mentally and emotionally draining play-off games.

Strongest side (knocks/injuries aside) please!

That’s a ridiculous comparisons. There are plenty of studies that show that the game was more physical 30-50 years ago, it is now much more intense and demanding on players. Stats such as 50% more sprinting, the ball being in play for 15 minutes more, etc.

You cannot even begin to compare the two eras.

And in that season you mention, the team massively underperformed from mid March, going from the team with the treble within their grasp, to just winning one trophy. I loved that squad, and that season, but to try and hold it up as justification for this squad having it easy is unjustified.

We're playing a team who've just got knocked out of the FA Cup semi finals. Surely they have more in common with our team of 81 than us.

Honestly, we are really over-thinking this. Our best player over the last 10 games or so is O'Shea.... and he's been ever-present. If there's one player who needs a rest... its O'Shea, except he's playing better than anyone else
Just play the players with the biggest hearts and cajones. It's end of season... everybody's knackered.

Absolutely, and at roughly the same time of the season as now we played 4 games in a week,

Sat 18/4 ARSENAL H
Mon 20/4 Norwich City A
Wed 22/4 FC Cologne A UEFA Cup Semi-Final
Sat 25/4 MANCHESTER CITY FA Cup Semi-final

So that would be

Palmer
Young
Kipre
Baggot
Johnson (possibly)
Neil
Cajuste
Mehmeti
Walle Egile
Clarke
Akpom

Baggot aside, that is still a very good Championship team.

I had this conversation after the game, it's a tough one as a win there would all but seal it for us, a heavy defeat adds pressure to the last game.

I think careful use of subs is needed Tuesday.
