Why would you get rid of Townsend, when wanting cover for Davis? He looked pretty capable when standing in last season. The only reason he's missed out this time is injury (a single major one, not multiple niggles).
Likewise Ogbene has looked pretty sharp while out on loan, after recovering from an injury.
The defence is working well (joint lowest goals conceded), do we want to risk breaking that up? |
He's 33 and only played a handful of games in the past 2 years, none this season, and coming back from a serious cruciate injury. I think its a pretty safe assumption that he'll move on if we go up.
Ogbene's played about 40 minutes of football for Sheffield United since November. If he's in our squad next season I will eat my hat. |  | | |

As discussed on various other threads, we would need a new starting eleven for the PL, your outline is pretty much the same as mine but based on last time round Jack Clarke and Jaden are not for me PL standard, nothing against them the jump is just so massive and they are too lightweight, we know all of this, this is not new news.

Bit harsh that. There's a reason Greaves, who most people like, couldn't get in the side for quite a long time. It's because Kipre was playing brilliantly, good on the ball and not giving strikers a sniff. I might be wrong here but I think he's got as many assists as Clarke and Philogene combined.
He's become more of a liability at times during the second half of the season and when he gets exposed it's really noticable. It's right Greaves now has the shirt back, but I wouldn't disregard Kipre completely. He's one of our stronger players generally, and we can't genuinely replace the whole squad if we go up. He'd be a bench defender I'd imagine. |

The problem with some of our fans is you're only as good as your last game.
Kipre's had a good season on balance, and there's a reason he's started nearly every game between September and his recent suspension. Greaves has done well since coming back in, but Kipre's a solid option and he's done well. Saturday wasn't his best game admittedly. | | | |

We would need a massive clear out. I just hope the recruitment team is up to it. Ashton has been banging on about having a poor recruitment system since day one. That was five years ago now. He can’t keep using that as an excuse. We ought to have all what we need now to help sort recruitment out. It’s been a bit of a shambles over the last few windows. We need two new strikers, plus Hirst. I think we need 2 new centre half’s along with O’Shea and Greaves. A new goal keeper,keeping Walton and Slicker as third choice. New left back along with Davis. New right back along with Darnell. Azor plus one for his role. 2 new midfielders to play along side plus maybe keep Taylor. Then we have Clarke and Jaden wide left, A new PL ready ready right sided player plus McAteer. 2 new 10s,who can actually play the position plus Nunez and Mehmeti. So 1 x GK, 1 x RB, 1 x LB, 1 x CB, 2 x CM, 1 x RW, 1 x #10, 2 x #9. That's obviously 10 players in, but I don't think that's a crazy suggestion. Most might view Matusiwa as PL quality, and he'll have a role to play, but I think the learning from last season has to be the necessity to get the recruitment right in the middle.

2 years ago we beat Southampton 1-0 away on our way to promotion. From the 11 starters and 9 subs combined only 3 remain at the club (not including players out on loan) - Hirst, Taylor and Davis.

I wouldn't have started the conversation yet, but thought I would add to it as people often moan about people starting a new thread when one exists. If for some reason some players decided to check in here, I don't think they'd be shocked that we think people who haven't been playing for us in the championship wouldn't come back and slot into a premier league version of our squad or hat we wouldn't be concerned at having to buy two strikers who have managed 7 league goals for us between them. |  |

10 new players. Wow. Can’t really argue it’s required. But we have a manager who has moaned like a drain about having to rebuild twice in two years (even though it was a choice) so I can’t imagine we’ll sign more than four or five.
Also we won’t have the money to spend that we had last time, we have a premier legacy P&L not league one this time, and quality over quantity I think is a lesson we’ve hopefully learnt.

Leeds signed 8 players for fees of between £5m & £20m, 6 of them from European clubs.
Sunderland signed 11 new players & spent more lavishly.
We will need to do something similar if we are to have a decent chance of staying up (assuming we go up). |  |

I think many are being far too generous to the current squad. If we *genuinely* want to challenge in the PL, we'll need:
1 Star/First Choice GK
1 Star/First Choice RB
2 CBs (one star LCB to partner Dara and one to push Dara)
1 LB (as good as Leif to rotate and maintain the structure KM prefers)
3 CMs (one to partner Matusiwa, one to push Matusiwa and another squad option)
2 RW (Sindre on a season loan somewhere and Burns leaving)
1 LW (Jaden could be off to Turkey promotion or not)
2 #10s (1 star 10 and 1 back-up to compete with Nunez. Mehmeti to be sold to a parachute Champ club)
2 CF (Ideally both star players that we can rotate with Hirst as #3)
15 players.
It's imperative that we continue to use the PL money to ensure our weakest players are better than or as good as the strongest players of the previous season's squad. [Post edited 28 Apr 15:39]
