Where do we think Christian Walton stands 17:31 - May 3 with 1851 viewsGeoffSentence

in the Ipswich pankeeperon?

Goalkeeper is one position where we have not really had anyone who could be considered truly exceptional. We have had some decent ones , Cooper, Wright, Bailey and Forrest stand out I'd say.

Would Walton fit in in that company?

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

Doesnt make him a prem keeper tho.

I 100% would have him as number 2. But I dont think those parries would get him out of jail in the prem.

If he is good enough to be 2nd choice (i.e. to play a full season if the regular keeper is injured or badly loses form), why is he not good enough to play in the Premier League?

Because youre really hoping you wont need to use him and buying two potential number 1 keepers and having one as a back up is tough for a newly promoted side.

Personally I am happy to stick with him and Palmer.

Would you rather make another Muric-type signing (we aren't going to get a better keeper than Muric are we?) Or would you like to see us get Hladky or someone like that because (for all their limitations) they are good with their distribution?

I actually think the risk vs return on trying to upgrade on Walton and Palmer isn't worth it. They weren't our issue when we were there last time round.

Id rather the club sign players correctly to stay up next season

Muric was always a risk. He didn't come with the best reviews. He was known for gaffs but had strong stats. Our signings were very much stat based in that summer.
I think if wed spent time watching muric we wouldn't have gone for him as his weaknesses were the areas KM needed his keeper to be strong in.

The signing of Palmer was a bad one too. Someone so poor at set pieces. Which we found out once he started playing. Both keepers named tho good shot stoppers. Altho Palmer never seemed to save one either lol.

But yes there should be a solid number 1 choice out there for a prem side to sign.
If we are saying we may as well stick with walton and Palmer. We may aswell stick with azon and Hirst too.

He hasnt.

We thank him for being better than Palmer. And hes a good number 2. But the amount of times he parries the ball down the middle of his own box causes us so many problems. Even yesterday he parried a shot straight down in front of him.
Its tho little extras that make a big difference. Esp in the prem.

Name these games where he parries down in the middle of the box. I'm as critical as anyone when it comes to goalkeeping errors, but I could count the number of times he's done this on one hand (I'm not from Norfolk).

He has exceeded my personal expectations this season by far, even though my expectations are irrelevant in the scheme of things. Great season, and gets my vote for POTS.

All time? He's up there in the top four. I wouldn't have said that a year ago.

Every keeper - even in the prem, makes mistakes, Im not sure Walts has made more that his share this season, .... has he? I know what you mean about his parry on Saturday, but does he really do that often - or is it just that keeper 'mistakes' are more noticeable/memorable? Do we have his stats on this specific area of weakness?

My perception is that he's been pretty solid this season and don't see him as a priority upgrade. That said, I think that everyone, except Oshea, Davis, Matty Sewer and possibly Clarke and Philogene, probably needs an upgrade if we're to stay up. No more 'Championship All Star ' signings please.

I think Walton has earned the right to be in the conversation. He's shown he is better than Palmer. A huge part of being a keeper is having the confidence of the defenders in front of you. With Palmer, the defence clearly had no trust, the passing back was excruciating and us fans were literally closing our eyes. Walts has totally fixed that, the passing between him and the defence, and the confidence it has given everyone, has transformed us this season.
Should we sign another keeper - yes, to compete with Walton. Because I don't really want to see Palmer playing for us again. A new keeper would need to be really carefully scouted - must have English as a first language as that communication is so important.

I like Walton personally, but I’m sure Sunderland fans liked Patterson last season too, but then the Mackems went out and signed Robin Roefs and look at the impact he’s made. Patterson at Millwall during this campaign and look how well he’s done there. A tough one for the Recruitment Department, but I’m sure they are looking at options.

I think it's an okay dilemma to have. I'd say we get in a new keeper who looks the business, but definitely keep Walton in and around the number 1 picture. We can be a lot more confident with him than 2 years ago but ideally we get a decent upgrade who is solid and ends up playing most games. If they aren't perfect then Walton can confidently give it a decent crack.

No idea on stats, but it is something that appears to happen in every game and we've got away with a fair few of them, but have also conceded a fair few from them too

I would argue that Bailey was exceptional. Surprised no mention of Richard Wright.

Or Best, Sivell, Hancock, who all played more games in the top division than Walton.

Christian has had a fantastic season though. I wasn't a fan originally. I thought Hladky was better and was sorry to see him go, but he's won me over this time around. Some fantastic saves, but not sure he has to mess around with short passes quite as much?

I like Walton. But I’d be stunned if we don’t sign a new keeper.

Agreed. He's been really good this season. But I really do think that it's one hell of a foundation for a team trying to stay up to have a top keeper.

I know it was (somehow!) a quarter of a century ago, but the one time we've achieved a really impressive finishing position in the Premier League era was when we had Richard Wright. And look what happened when we lost him. I think that speaks volumes.

The difficulty is that if you sign a player for a random outfield position, and they don't work out, it's not the end of the world. And signing players with big reputations from overseas is always more of a risk, especially in goal, than signing an established Prem player. We're unlikely to get a bargain unless we sign from overseas, however.

Sereni and Muric are two of the finest case studies of this kind. Both undoubtedly talented. Neither, it's fair to say, worked. Assuming Muric isn't returning, where do we go?

I really think for the Premier League we need an upgrade on Walton, as much as I think he's been really good this year.

If we could get a player like Kelleher for the sort of money Brentford paid, that would be magic. I doubt we could.

As for where Walton stands in the context of Town keeping greats, I think it really depends on what criteria you use. We've had some really good keepers who aren't legends or even greats, and have even been forgotten, because they weren't with us long. I really rated Neil Alexander, but he played little more than half a season.

Bart shone in a difficult environment. Kelvin Davis was very able for the division.

I wouldn't put Walton higher than those two, to be honest. He's been a different character to Hladky in terms of how he plays, but he's learned to play with the ball at his feet adequately enough for this level, and his other skills have been well capable of keeping us safe in a competitive enough division.

For me, our best ever keeper is clearly either Wright or Cooper. The goalkeeping game changed so much from the 1970s to the 2000s and then again to now. So it's hard to compare. Cooper wasn't an outright star in our great Sir Bobby team, whereas Wright was the bedrock, and went on to win the league with Arsenal. Since Wright, GK has been our poorest position in the top flight, with disastrous results.

If we're to stay up, I would think that at the end of the Prem season, we need our keeper to be at least in the top two thirds of keepers in the division when it comes to the final reckoning. I can't see Walton being that, with great respect. He should stay as number 2, and I imagine he would want to.

I like him a lot but he has done it twice in the last 2 weeks once v QPR Saturday, guy fortunately volleyed over. Vs Charlton parried central for goal scored.

It feels like a position we haven’t solved and will be keen to now we are promoted, however if the right keeper isn’t available then I’m sure they would be happy to go with Walton or Palmer.
