I dont think he was. Just that himself personally only had runner up medals.

He may however now realise politics is not why he lost his place go oshea and that it was simply that wolfy is not as good as he thinks he is as shown by him not getting in at Coventry either.

Hes an ample cb cover for a champ side. Nothing more. Nothing less.

He is a first choice centre back for most Championship sides. I can see him going to Sheffield United.

He was a first choice CB for side promoted from the Championship two seasons ago, and didn't disgrace himself last season either, when given the opportunity. He has the talent to be a Championship starter, but things didn't work out this year, I'd argue because he had no pre-season with his new side, so the CB pairing was established when he joined. And he joined a side with two strong CBs in Thomas and Kitching. I think there were rumours Thomas was on his way, but it never materialised.

Don't see a problem. If any player or KM see anything as a percieved " dig ", well the perfect answer is to ram it back down his throat again twice next season, instead of stupid verbal swordfights. Personally I liked him as a player, and I'm happy for him that he's back in the PL, whatever part he gets to play in it. Lifes too short, especially at my age!

We will see we can only go by what happened

He was replaced by a better cb
Signed a new deal and then cried about not being first choice
Publicly made out he didnt deserve to be replaced
Then joined another side who even when they ended up losing cbs at times during the season still decided wolfy wasnt good enough to be first choice cb.

Let's see how his future goes before declaring he is a first choice cb. KM has been the only manager who for a time felt he was when defending wasnt really something we were bothered about. All other managers and then KM and now Coventry have chosen other players over wolfy when concentrating on defence.

Lovely guy. Was a blue. But needs to understand he has limits.

Very interesting to note as an aside, as you said "defending wasn't really something we were bothered about" in reference to Woolfenden being in the line up - our xGA was better in 2023/24 than 2025/26, despite conceding more goals first time around.

I didn't get why he signed a new deal when he did. The only one I was more baffled by was Paul Lambert's new contract! I can understand some bitterness, as thought he played quite well when called upon in 2024/25. I think the lack of pre-season did cost him so we'll see what happens. I do agree with you, if he wants first team football, he probably needs to move on.

It is interesting as our xga has been better than 23/34 for the majority of the season. As shown to chantryboy previously. It took a slight turn in the last couple months. But then that does coincide with change or left cb and losing davis for a month too.

But look we all liked wolfy when he was here. Id have liked for him to stay hed have had the same result and wouldnt have had to talk about politics and gone up with his boyhood club again.

Now tho he will likely become a defender doing the rounds in the champ.

I wonder whether he would have even turned up on the bench, let alone play for us, this season. I think he made the right decision to move on, and he got more game time at Coventry than he would have done here.

ETA: Whatever the reason, defensively across we were surprisingly more solid in 23/24 than 25/26, which is something that needs to be looked at before next season.

Been enjoying the celebrations my friend

Very pleased we’re up but it should have been more comfortable than it was. Particularly enjoyed the Southampton game though

Be interested to see how we get on next year. We’ve been sh!t this season, as I may have pointed out once or twice lol, but I think in some ways we might be better set up to play in the Prem now. Someone like Matusiwa for example - I don’t really rate him (I know, before someone disagrees) because I don’t think he’s progressive enough but I think he might thrive in the Prem where his job is just to get the ball and pass it to someone better on the ball than him, rather than in this league where he’s had to try and be progressive

Maybe I’ve got this wrong. According to the tables I’ve seen we conceded 57 in 2023/4 and 47 in 2025/6. Doesn’t that make this season’s defence 21% more effective? Please correct me if I’m wrong given my rubbish O’Level and flee the scene maths.

Regardless, former players are just that. Chaplin was born on the south coast and if the club he supports is Portsmouth, great. He did superbly for us. Woolfenden, whether he likes or loathes ITFC, that’s his business. He spent a lot of years here, did us well and is earning a living elsewhere. With the latter, the current CHs are better players individually and given he’s not a starter at Coventry, clearly they have better too.

Chaplin is more interesting in that he was key to our promotion campaign in 2024 and I suspect the 2024 version would have had a big impact on this season’s team too. But somehow his form has dipped and he’s not quite the same player. Given his age I hope he recovers it and like most former players I wish him well.

Think we will have to agree to disagree with that.
Weve conceded less goals this season. So that alone is better than 23 24
Whilst going through the mass squad changeover.
I felt more comfortable this season defensively than that season 100%

I really hope any dislike felt towards Woolf is from a minority. It's not like we have many academy kids kicking around the higher levels, let alone many who spent half their career here or were a mainstay in back-to-back promotions.

He seems to me a bit too honest and prone to a little chippiness. We saw that surface in his bus parade interview after promotion to the PL, when he spent his moments calling out Don Goodman. Evidently he left the club after being upset that the door had closed on his starting opportunities, having keenly felt an injustice there. He spoke his truth rather unwisely and earned his demerit points for it, quite right, but hardly a cardinal sin. Pushing to leave because the manager's preference is not to play you, I struggle to have little sympathy for that perspective. He'd make a poor diplomat, sure.

Then this post looks the gentlest of digs if intended to be one, and that he's taken it down indicates to me that little offence was meant.

I do think one our issues under McKenna, whatever the squad, is we tend to be very easy to break through. Even yesterday there were moments where QPR just cut through us and were suddenly on the edge of our box out of nowhere. Would love to see some solidity in midfield next season; think we need it if we're going to have a chance of survival.

Its the two in midfield and our use of davis.

Its fine when its holding back and organised. But when we get forward it doesnt take much for teams to beat our press and get at us. Youve then got no cms in place and a david halfway up the pitch.

Its been better this season at times... but like that southampton 2nd goal it was far to easy to get at us.

I do think KM needs to review his pivot and davis usage in the prem.

Weve seen a different slower style of town this season .. but that determination to remain with the pivot did still signs of how easy it is to get past and if we do that in the prem again we are gonna find it hard.

I’m not sure what your basing you defensive conclusions on, but we were much worse in 23/24.

This season our xGA was 47.5, which is pretty much where we ended up. In 23/24 it was 46.5, and we allowed 57 in.

From Footy Stats:

For the second line, why I questioned whether it was a keeper issue why we conceded so many more goals than the xGA in 2023/24 and made me question was it down to the relative keeper performance.

"Looking at the Defensive Strength of the Team: If a team is conceding a lesser number of goals than expected goals against (xGA), it suggests there is a strong goalkeeper, or a strong defensive organization. A team conceding more than its xGA has a weak defense."

OK. I'll take the experts on that one! I'd have thought xGA would be determined on number of clear chances created. The less number of clear chances the lower the xGA,; in other words opposite to xG where it's dependent on the quality of the chance - the better the chance the better the xG.

I get our xG will be higher than goals scored this season as we seemed to miss decent chances in nearly every game!

Hope he makes the most of it as he’ll be back playing in the championship next season. Barely played for Coventry and big Frank will be sniffing around Chelsea’s reserve team for additions

This season he’s played in 17 of their league matches - so whilst not a regular, saying that he’s bearly played is stretching the truth somewhat.

Some perspective. Chuba Akpom has played in 25 of our games this season and it would be fair to say he’s barely played.

Fair enough. Apologies. Tbh I don’t really understand xG or its merits, hence going for the simpleton goals conceded aporoach. I should really make a bit more effort with xG.

Taking the calculations out, the defence this season has felt more secure, but maybe that’s misplaced perception. I think Furlong’s solidity, good positioning and height has helped. Some of the passing out of defence has given me heart failure, mind.

But overall, with the odd exception I’ve had few worries about the defensive side of the team. Shout out for O’Shea. He’s been immense and got better as the season has progressed.

Akpom's played for 1,031 minutes this season; Woolfenden 1,252, an equivalent of two and half more games. Doesn't seem much, but I think he played more at Coventry than he would have done here. If he had gone elsewhere he may have played more, but not sure if anyone else was willing to stump up the fee.

I agree. I was surprised at the figures, other than feeling we're very easy to play through at times, but thought that of the old guard as well (as per my replied to Frimmers). The sofascore link has confused me a bit, to be honest!

I do think we're not as smooth playing out of the back. That's partly down to the change in personnel but partly down to teams changing their approach against us. O'Shea has just grown as the season's gone on, as has Greaves.
