Kept hoping each change would be the start of something but it was managed decline in the end. I remember midweek home games and looking around and even when they said 14,000 it looked more like 10,000 |
Yep they definitely beefed it up. I remember the game I think against Fleetwood where it was just long balls on to Harry Souttars head for 90 minutes. TWTD.

And we still had people defending Evans. Not many by the end, granted, but it took until quite close to the end until you didn’t get a lot of push back when you criticised him. He wasn’t evil, or corrupt, or batsh*t crazy like some owners (*cough* Sheff Wednesday *cough*), but he was hugely incompetent and that was obvious from quite early on. Although writing off the debt was a very generous action.

Evans's problem was that he was hopeless at selecting managers, no doubt advised by his mate Harry Redknapp. Mick was easily the best of Evan's bunch.

I was there, it’s was Bristol City away. I ended up having lunch with Ian Milne and a few others in Bradford-upon-Avon the following day (don’t ask) and he told me Mick was off. He also said Lampard was top of the list to replace him. That was about a month before he left IIRC. Obviously a lot of people told me I was talking shit when I posted it on here.

We had plenty of ‘thank you Marcus’ when he was prized from under his rock. But not from me. Sadly, his predecessor (who i met once and liked) was also incompetent. The Board under Kerr wasn't much better. The club was kept alive through many dismal seasons by those inside the club who loved it, including Simon Milton who was MC today and its supporters. There was nowhere near the number there is now. But the 9000 who were there in the Duncan, Lyall and early Burley years and the hard core that went away to desperate games like Port Vale 5-0 sustained the club. Their reward, whether they are still with us or looking down from on high, is now. These are the days. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Anyone else still find this totally surreal? on 19:54 - May 4 by Radlett_blue | Hanging on to Mick WAY too long? Mick did a great job in his first few seasons, steering a hopeless side away from relegation, then gradually improving us until we got into the play offs in his second full season. In his 3rd season, we finished 7th. Should he have been sacked then? Really? Yes, Mick's last season was dull, with the football becoming increasingly turgid & only enlightened by the goals of Tom Lawrence & Mick left at the right time. |
The Tom Lawrence season was 2016-17 and probably would have been a good time for MM to leave. But it wasn’t until basically the end of 17-18 that he did.

Superb post. Thanks. There's often talk of a Sir Kieran statue outside FPR but this could be the start of a movement to push for a "Mystic Phil" statue too.

I was one of those who defended Evans - largely because I couldn't imagine a world where someone like Gamechanger would come in and revitalise the club, and that a much more realistic situation was one where someone would come in, asset strip, and we would quickly end in league 2 and fighting for the future of the club. The reality I think is that Evans found himself well in over his head from a relatively early stage, got stung by Keane blowing millions on players that didn't deliver, and then spent about 5 or 6 years hoping to sell the club to get it off his hands. I do think it is important to recognise the role he played in the sale, it was clear he wanted to pass the club onto a responsible owner rather than just anyone who would meet his valuation, and seemed to make it relatively straightforward for the new management to come in and start rebuilding the club. Town always finished in the top half of League 1. While this was poor for a club of Town's size, on what basis were we heading for League 2? The problem was Evans's appointment of incompetent mangers like Wurst & Lambert.

| Anyone else still find this totally surreal? on 09:31 - May 5 with 180 views | BloomBlue | Surreal, and we should never forget how far this ownership have taken us in a short period. Too many have moaned this year without appreciating how fast the journey has been. A League 1 club, with infrastructure that had been allowed to crumble to non league level 5, have been upgraded in 4 years back to PL level. Any improvement at that speed will have some set backs. | | | |

| Anyone else still find this totally surreal? on 10:56 - May 5 with 126 views | DarkBrandon | I don’t really think of the end of the Evans era, but the middle. I always felt that when we were in League One we were below our natural level. We were a big club at that level, and it seemed likely that we could turn it round with either a modest amount of investment, a group of players coming through the academy at the same time or managing to hire an excellent manager. Maybe we needed two of the three … but it felt obtainable. But looking at how we had been overtaken by sides such as Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth, and seeing a large number of what I considered big clubs in the Championship (depending on the year some from: Derby, Leeds, Wolves, Birmingham, Sunderland, Middlesboro) some of whom would have a huge advantage from parachute payments I was starting to wonder if mid table Championship was our realistic ceiling. Very happy that wasn’t the case | | | |
