Usually a pretty reliable WBA source ..

Fair enough, we'll be wanting an upgrade there and he'd end up as third choice at best.

I wouldn't rule out 2-3 of our lot ending up there....

I've seen Szmodics linked there too.

Realistically how much would we get? Is £5m + £1m optimistic? I'm sure we could add clauses such as if he re-discovers his form and bags a load of goals to get them promoted.

I'd hope we keep him. I cannot forget his save against Aston Villa.

And Walton has "grown", too.

Always handy for a goalkeeper to have a growth spurt in his 30s.

£3m - £4m for Szmodics and £2m - £3m for Palmer?

£6m+ for the pair, with some add ons on top would be reasonable I would say.

LOL. Hope it's not a spurt, else he'll be bashing his head on the crossbar. Regular doorways are challenging enough for him atm, no need for more stooping.

'I'd hope we keep him. I cannot forget his save against Aston Villa'

Based on this logic, we should keep Muric as he had a great game at Brighton

In reality we need better as neither have really shown they are at the level we need for the Prem

Proper fine margins innit. If not for that injury, he'd likely be sitting on 46 games for the season.

I disagree with your post. Both have been good, though perhaps Walton inspires less confidence with his short-distance passing out than does Palmer.

As for "logic", mine was just one example - no statistical analyses.
Nor have you provided any links to such, other than a bald opinion.
Which is what mine was.

I would be sorry to see either Palmer or Walton go. Whether we need another goalkeeper, then my opinion is open to persuasion. Your post is not persuading me.

I doubt we'd be getting £2m to £3m for Palmer.

We bought him when we were in the Prem, and I don't think WBA needed or especially wanted to sell. He's now older, and has had a year of not being first choice in the Championship. I think if we get £1m we'd have done well.

Smodders will be 31 in September, and has done OK with Derby without dazzling. £3m to £4m would be good business from our point of view I would think.

All buying clubs will know that we're offloading players and will need to get rid of them come what may. So unless there's a proper bidding war, I think the fees we can command will be on the soft side.

Can see it happening.

Sign a keeper (Rushworth) to compete with Walton. Slicker to be third choice to help entice Delap back.

Palmer is still a good age for a keeper and is a top end Championship level keeper so I think £2m to £3m is about right, £1m seems undervalued. I'd be fine with him moving on. I think we need a new keeper in the Prem, Sunderland owe much of their survival down to signing a keeper who has been excellent for them (among other key signings, but their xG stats suggest they should be conceding more than they have), so a really high level keeper is a must. Walton is capable back up for me but he's not quite good enough in key areas to be a Prem number 1. Palmer also has too many limitations for that level as well.

For me, if we are replacing Walton i'd want someone that is a clear level above and Rushworth isn't that. He'd be just as big a risk as Muric was, and Aro had top flight experience at that.

Szmodics has at least done quite well at Derby, showing he hasn't lost his eye for goal if played in the right position. I think Derby were interested in a permanent deal. but the clubs couldn't agree a fee. I reckon we can shift him for a small fee, although 2 years left on his Town contract might deter some.

Can see palmer moving on. Walton will be back up next season. We will almost certainly sign a new keeper.

He's only 29, it's a good age for a keeper. I can't see why he would be worth half what we paid tbh, especially back to the same club. If we shook hands on getting our money back (£2m wasn't it?) I would say that's a fair deal. I can't think of many top Champ keepers in their prime years changing hands for £1m in this day and age.

Stay here and cover for Walton in case of injury or suspension and play in the cup games is surely better than going back to WBA!

And there was me thinking that £2-3 million for Palmer would be cheap!

Agree with you which must be a first lol.

We need someone like Steele whose not getting game time at Brighton as he at least knows the league and will want to prove a point.

but we are back into the point from the last time in the Prem, there are 10 other players on the pitch who can help keep the ball away from the goal, the goalie is not the sole person in this.

you dont want your keeper having to make amazing saves all the time, because it means other things arent working on the pitch, so you dont need to sign some kind of world class keeper, you want someone who can play to feet, can make the occasional amazing save if needed but is basically just solid allrounder. weve arguably got 3 of them on the books already.
