Just give him a two year deal and be done with it. Would love for him to score a Premier League goal or two.

I think it's going to come down to his preference of staying as a bit part player or move on to a Championship side (or foreign equiv) where he'll start most games. The money on the table may also be a factor, of course. Likely his last big payday.

If Wes is happy with a 1 yr contract.... give it to him.

SWE won't work as a RW and so he goes out on loan... and so we can go with McAteer / Wes... and another( Azeez?).

If by Jan, it isn't working for Wes, we give him a send off and loan out

I suspect he isn't happy with a 1 yr contract, and I certainly wouldn't blame him.

I suspect the truth of the contract situation is both parties would like him at the club for next year, but for someone with lots of injury problems, a long contract is a risk for the club and likewise a short contract is too much of a risk for the player.

If he's such an injury risk..... why would any club offer him a 3 yr contract?

For sentimentality, I'd offer him a 1 year contract. No more. He might get a 2 or 3 years contract at a lower level somewhere else.... so it's up to him. His risk.... he gets a 1 year stab at the highest level at the end of his career here or he gets2/ 3 years at a lower level somewhere else. If he backs himself.... he can get 1 last year here, then try and get a 2 or 3 year contract somewhere else.

You'd also think that a year of PL wages would more than match what he might earn in 2-3 years lower down the leagues

Everyone's different, but with the money our players have been paid at Champ & EPL level in the last 3 seasons, if it were me (yeah, if only!) I'd by now have enough stashed away for infinitely preferring the kudos of playing short-term in the Prem to several years of longer-term but lower pay cheques in lower leagues.

Though sheer enjoyment of playing games regularly may well be a greater consideration of course.

You do realise the deal was organized for Akpom 12 months ago?

Yes but that effectively means we offered a 29 yo a 4 year deal doesn't it?

I've assumed this is all part of the Wes Burns PR for when he (inevitably) leaves as we will only offer a 1 + 1 deal.

"I wanted to stay but had to look after my family" etc...

....on the proviso he's part of a squad that makes the club £150 million+ . Which is win win, and which happened, obviously. Whereas any decision made now is separate to that, and an additional cost we don't necessarily need to take on.

Alongside trying to crank up a little bit of fan pressure, to try and encourage Ashton to improve on the current offer.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.
