Academy - How does promotion affect the outlook? 15:29 - May 6 with 1359 viewswkf07tsu

How do we perceive promotion from a perspective of the academy? Obviously a bigger profile for the club, but there must be players who would have expected to break through if we hadn't got promoted (thinking Ayinde/Boniface/Mendel-Idowu/Buabo) - will any of those have any chance of a look-in next season? (I doubt it, sadly)

We haven't really seen any youth break through recently (last 5 academy players to break through & make 10+ league starts in a season - Woolfenden/Dozzell/Downes/Bishop/Kenlock)

Does the stronger financial position of the club mean we will just buy players with more experience & overlook the academy? Will McKenna give the youngsters a shot?

Would love to see a steady production line of players coming through, but even with investment, definitely not a guarantee

I’d like to think with all the resources that are being ploughed into the new Category 1 Academy that there will be players breaking through into the first team. Think it’ll take a few years though, unless a couple of real talents suddenly burst on the scene. Of the ones you mentioned it would be nice to see a couple of those be in/around the Prem squad

Equally though it increases our pull for youth players so in theory our quality should improve at academy level. It's a bit of a catch 22 in that the youths will probably be better but the level needed to break through to the first team will be higher too. As has been the case since our rise from the dark days of league One. Stay at that kind of level and we'd have more academy prospects through but at that lower level.

I think those that has watched Mendel-Idowu have mentioned that going forward he's rather excellent....working back or out of possession, not quite so good.

My gut feel is that we are a long way from producing first team players (I'm not aware of anyone, even Boniface, that could step up). Not to say we won't but this is longer term.

In the short/ medium term - it will be more about transfer dealings and bringing in talent that adds to the squad but have re-sale value.

I've kind of given up any hope of us producing home grown players for our first team.

Hopefully Cat 1 might change that in the next few years.

I guess our league status and academy status make us less likely to lose our top prospects way before they get anywhere near potential first team selection though.

If they are good enough they’ll play.

It isn’t as if our youngsters have gone on to play for clubs around or above us.

The main thing it does is give us another 3 years minimum of Premier League money, ensuring that we can continue at Cat 1, widen our network and have a bigger and better name to attract players, plus pay for the training ground etc.

It doesn't make players breaking through any more likely, but we've got a few in there with half a chance over the next few years - an England U17 international, a couple in the England U15 squad, some an U14 who has played for the U18s a couple of times.....but it's still incredibly difficult to even retain kids because of Brexit at 16.....but every little helps, but there certainly isn't a conveyor belt and being in a different division 5 seasons in a row doesn't help!

At the end of the PL season Tom Taylor was on the bench a few times but didn't get on.

This season he spent the first half of the season at Cheltenham where he started 1 league game, was a used sub in 11 games, an unused sub in 3 and not in the squad for 4. They finished 18th in League 2.

He then joined Woking at the end of March, and was a used sub in 6 of their last 8 games; they finished 10th in the National League

Fin Barbrook was involved with the first team squad at start of season, he signed for Lincoln and didn't make a match day squad in first half of season. He ended season at Colchester who finished mid table in L2; started 7 games, was a used sub in 9 and an unused sub in 3 games

Our best prospects aren't close to where we need them to be yet - it's no surprise because if a 19-20 year old was good enough to be in a parachute team; then they would have been good enough for us as a 17-18 year old in L1/Champ seasons before.

We are playing catch up, think only ones who have been a bit unlucky are Humphreys and Baggott who would have been good enough without the 2nd promotion

Given both the performance of our U21 team this season and our league finish plus now that we have a Cat 1 Academy will we get a offered a place in next seasons National League Cup?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

This season it featured Championship teams including Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion plus there were PL U21 teams involved.

If we get a place at least that gives our U21s experience of different level of football compared to just youth games.

The U21 team will also, I think, play in Europe, which also offers a really good learning experience.

I dunno, I think Boniface and Mendel having Championship or top level L1 loans next season.
Carr isn't a mile off either and Josh Pitts looks very good.

Exactly this. We've upgraded with some good prospects from decent clubs but the fact we have done so well in the table at youth level does tell the full picture. We need to be in a position where our best youth players are getting championship loans if we want them to break into the first team. L1 minimum but even then unlikely to be close to first team quickly if we are in the prem.

Only exceptional talents would go from the youths straight into the first team in the league.
