Great man who has kept us on our toes regarding the environment. His encounter with the gorilla family is seared into my brain and reenforced the danger of the human species. He can't be given enough praise for what he has done in his long life.

He is the reason that Tennis Balls are yellow. He was in charge of BBC 2, and they showed Wimbledon, and it was hard to tell the then traditionally white Tennis ball apart from the line, so TV audiences struggle to know if balls were in or out.
He suggested to change the ball colour to yellow..
I'm listening to Planet Rock & they're asking for suggestions of songs with animal related themes in honour of his 100th
I've suggested In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins because of that chocolate advert
...& of course, "Fear of the DUCK"
(to Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden 1992)...
(A fright, from a quack... is just a fear of the duck)
I am a man who walks alone On public footpaths near the road Too close to water - and I'm gone
You may call them feathered friends Some of you even feed them bread But you won't see me near the park
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a constant fear a waterfowl is near Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a phobia there's one surveilling me
As you run your finger down the page To understand your fear of drakes Swimming, waddling or in flight
Sometimes when you're scared to look it up Anatidaephobia The fear waterfowl's watching you
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a constant fear a waterfowl is near Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a phobia there's one surveilling me
Have you ever heard a quack echo? Are ducks real? Do dolphins know? I wish I was a pipistrelle
Now I must quicken up the pace I have to fly now, like a train The Mallard's all I can think of
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a constant fear a waterfowl is near Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a phobia there's one surveilling me
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck Fear of the duck, fear of the duck Fear of the duck, fear of the duck Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
Watching horror films is no problem Live/animated/CGI Not if it's Disney's Donald Duck
All waterfowl leave me in pain It makes me soil the porcelain There's no relief - look, Toilet Duck!
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a constant fear a waterfowl is near Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a phobia there's one surveilling me
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a constant fear a waterfowl is near Fear of the duck, fear of the duck I have a phobia there's one surveilling me
When I'm walking on my own I fear I'm never just alone

I think he is great, but as a counterpoint, most influential?
"There are short-term problems and long-term problems. Politicians are tempted to deal with short-term problems all the time and neglect long-term problems.
(Climate change) is not only a long-term problem, it is the biggest problem humanity has ever faced. Please examine it, and please respond."
Today, who is influencing which people we put in power to solve humanity’s greatest problem.
“ Farage has made no secret of his intention to find a new dividing line in British politics over the climate. He told the Sun on Sunday last year: “This could be the next Brexit – where parliament is so hopelessly out of touch with the country.” Presenting net zero as an obsession of the “elites”, in opposition to the interests of the ordinary voter, is key.”

Yes, one of the most positively influential in raising the awareness and care of tens of millions of people - plenty of evidence of how his TV series have been shown around the world & inspired environmental actions in a good way, some of whick I hope will be shown in the BBC1 tribute just starting now (so I'm off in a min!).
But you're also right - I did consider listing a few negative 'most influentials' such as Farage and T.rump - but it's SDA's day - and I did say "*one of* the most influential" :)

Also behind the building of the old BBC television centre I think? In the shape of a question mark. A great mid century building!

I’m struggling to think of anyone who’s made such a contribution and is also so loved. He’s a genuine legend.
Even before his nature documentaries didn’t he commission some TV programs against the general tide of feeling at the time but that went on to become classics? I think Monty Python was one.
He’s someone with impeccable judgment as well as having a soul that understands what’s important. We could do with a lot more of him in these times when curiosity is lacking and people couldn’t give a monkeys about the environment and the wonderful creatures that we share the planet with.
Just watching the birthday celebration; blimey, he looks in fantastic nick for a 100 year old - must be good for human health to hang around with and look after other animals.
Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

I saw something the other day where someone said they'd done a degree, a masters, a PhD, got a research job in their chosen field, worked up an hypothesis, tested it, produced results, had it peer reviewed and published, cited by other researchers only for someone to say " that's bollox"

A true national treasure as Ryorry mentioned. Someone we've all grown up with and respected. Him turning 100 and reflecting on his amazing life has been a bright moment in the last couple of depressing days. I think people of his status are a dying breed. Literally. How many others have his status? There are people lording it up right now who aren't fit to lace his shoes. 100 is a great achievement but it reminds us life is precious and finite. It will be a very sad day when that beautiful light does finally dim.
"I don't want to be like everyone else. That's why I'm a mod, see?"

Did you watch the programme last night?
I actually underestimated - his Blue Planet etc programmes have been seen by 500 million people around the world. He has met with and persuaded CEOs of huge global corps, Prime Ministers, Presidents, Royals, policy makers, as well as ordinary people to commit to more environmentally friendly measures. “The Blue Planet Effect” - single use plastic massively reduced, plastic shopping bag charges introduced. Silverback Gorilla protections introduced- numbers now risen to 1,000 from 250 at time of filming. The annual Earthshot prize. Literally millions of young people inspired to get into environmental and conservation work. Etc.
Also, Sir David is apparently the most trusted human being currently alive! Everything he says in his programmes is based on scientific facts.

I’ll say it again, I think he is great.
The single most important thing that is facing the planet is climate change, that effects all humanity, and lots of other life forms.
The most important thing influencing politics in the U.K. is a 0.06% problem.
That seems a sharp contrast, that happens to be notable, during the week past.

Even the crowded UK doesn’t have 500 million inhabitants.
As last night’s tribute pointed out, his influence has been global.
Don’t know why you’re so determined to try and deny that.
Edit: oh, and if you haven't seen any of his documentaries, there's often a 10-15 minute section at the end about the making of the series, including very strong messages about the inter-connectedness of pollution of our oceans, deforestation, increasing extinction of species, denuding of biodiversity, and climate change. I think the majority of the 500 million would understand, even if some don't.

I googled to see if Farage has kids/grandkids - yes, 4 children & a toddler grandson who'll be 2 next month.
Seems he cares as little about their futures as that of us plebs.
