| Don't believe he has thought this one through on 17:26 - May 8 by StokieBlue | He's clearly not put his point across very well and the figures are obviously silly but the general point that landlords make a fortune from rentals in Hackney has an element of truth to it. A 1-bed flat could easily be over 2000 GBP a month with a 2 months+ deposit upfront. I am sure the situation is similar in many other places across the country. Really the solution to that is more social housing but when they knock down an aging council block they tend to rebuild with a nice new one where 50% of the flats are no longer social housing but are sold to pay for the development. Continually doing that is going to erode the social housing stock hugely over time. SB |
So just to clarify, so I don’t misrepresent your view. Are you agreeing with him that private landlords should not make a profit?

Put people on the street that can’t afford to buy and reduce property values for home owners at the same time that have been trying to build equity. Cause chaos in the financial market while you’re at and let properties going into disrepair. Genius stuff! [Post edited 9 May 4:18]

Whereas when all rentable property is owned by private equity companies charging the maximum possible rent you will be rubbing your hands together with glee! Bring on the chaos!

| Don't believe he has thought this one through on 06:47 - May 9 by NthQldITFC | Clamp down on the unlimited parasitic 'buy to let' model that TV programmes w*nk off about all the time, and build social housing? Or is that too close to the pockets of the middle grounders? Cue opprobrium storm. |
The buy to let is less of an issue than the massive property companies who own tens of thousands of properties and add little to the economy, and can easily funnel capital offshore away from HMRC. The Royals that people fawn over on here ‘own’ thousands of properties through the crown trust worth billions of pounds (whilst paying less tax than those who bought a buy to let to support their retirement for example) As always the billionaires are pointing you in the wrong direction and the populist greens love it.

Housing is far too important to be in the hands of private equity. Saying that I haven’t watched that video. Edit; I’ve watched it and I agree with the principle [Post edited 9 May 9:11]

| Don't believe he has thought this one through on 03:27 - May 9 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | That’s not what he’s arguing, he quite literally just said no landlord should make a profit, which would mean there would be no landlords, which means…. |
Which means more social housing provided at affordable sub-market prices run by local government, non-profit organisations and housing associations, like exists in several other European countries where homelessness can be as little as 10% of UK levels. The idea that only market forces can determine the distribution and operation of housing stock does stack with evidence from elsewhere. It wasn’t always this way even in the UK. How we would get from where we are to such a place isn’t easy to work out though without cheesing off a lot of people, as Guthers said.

No I’m not. I do sell food though, which is another basic human right. Are you advocating that people who sell food should not do so for profit? You do remind me of a previous poster who was continually telling other posters to check their privilege. He thought he was taking the Michael but always ended up putting his foot in it. People should be rewarded appropriately for their labour. Every child should get free school meals - breakfast and lunch.

You very regularly seem to edit your posts without explaining the edit. Why not concentrate on getting it right first time? Your second para (i.e. the one edited into the post) suggests you have a guilty conscious about your own privilege if anything.

Presumably you're sourcing your food from workers' cooperative and all, carefully considered, profits are shared equally between you and the other workers so we're all good.

Will your mate Nige get them to remove their tattoos, throw away their iphones and make them live in a detention centre? If you think they are all getting all that from the government without ever having worked for a living I think you are probably very much mistaken. And if you think a Reform or Restore government would stop it, you are even more so! |

People should be allowed to make a profit on good of course, except the ex-pat English moving abroad to Scotland and confusing the natives with their fancy concoctions. #KeepScotlandHaggis

Profit margins on food are very thin. Margins on letting houses are often enormous. We have a mostly successful food chain in this country; housing is completely broken. It’s deranged that people are charged 1.5k for rent and told they can’t afford a mortgage, it’s massively unfair they can be kicked out of the places they rent at the landlord’s whim (I appreciate this is changing slowly now).

| Don't believe he has thought this one through on 11:10 - May 9 with 487 views | nrb1985 | While he comes across as ludicrous here, as others have said, he is at least on the right lines. The obvious solution is rent controls like most major cities across the globe have. Currently in Japan where controls and laws around this type of thing are incredibly strict. The other obvious point is to make jobs elsewhere more attractive and alleviate stress on london housing. On that point, I’m very pro local councils having more autonomy over things like corporation tax etc. What incentive as it stands does anybody have to build a business or base a business outside the south east? Not many I’d guess. | | | |
