Probably the most working class member of the labour cabinet.
If one is in favour of a bit more egalitarianism, this was probably the best aspect of the first Starmer cabinet.

Indeed, maybe a large factor in the downfall of the UK over the decades is the over-representation of those educated at Oxbridge as PM and in Cabinet. Indeed, doing PPE at Oxford must be a bit like doing a Science GCSE because it doesn't go into depth on only one subject.

Burnham is like an injured footballer (and to an extent David Miliband). Nothing has increased his reputation like his absence from front line politics

That's fair, and I also accept he was originally a Blairite, but I still think having someone who has proved they can lead rather having someone who has proved they can't is an advantage.

lol. I can’t get my head around the tribal support messages that are coming out from some of them. Do they not see how this current leadership is destroying their Party? I actually think they’re doing some good stuff and making progress. But this is politics. They can’t do a few good things they barely mention whilst simultaneously pissing off everyone and expect to make any headway. Too many mistakes, too disjointed, no vision, not much conviction.
There was a cracking post from Clive Lewis yesterday on X. It’s only one post, but it showed more vision and conviction than we’ve seen from Starmer in 2 years. Agree or not with his view, it’s someone who’s thinking about things. I thought it was good anyway (I saw it on my favourite lefty economist blog here - https://www.taxresearch.org.uk
Lewis was who I hoped would be elected when Corbyn resigned. Sadly didn't even get enough nominations to stand.
One of the few Labour MPs who I think understands what the country needs.

That’s the whole point isn’t it? Streeting seems to be making a play precisely because Burnham isn’t in a position to challenge. Now is exactly the right time if you want to beat the guy who needs to become an MP before he can mount a leadership challenge.

It’s not the 1920s any more. Working class people make up less than 45% of the population now compared to 80% when Labour were formed. They have to represent people from across the classes if they want to win votes. Blair (aka as Bliar) recognised that, raising living standards across the spectrum in a way unparalleled in modern times. It doesn’t matter if the middle classes and the Champagne Socialists get lifted up as long as everyone does. It’s only when the working class are crapped on we have a problem (see 2010 onwards).

Was Atlee working class? Blair? Brown? etc etc. Nonsense really. Just cos someone is from a working class background it doesn't make them the best candidate for leadership. It is possibly a minor factor. But you know that and are just trying to justify your choice

I did join the Labour Party but didn’t vote for Corbyn in the end as I didn’t think it was the right to do. This has been brought up and answered several times Stokie. You’re doing a dolly.

Leaving aside his policy position, it strikes me that one issue Streeting has is that he is yet another London MP.
And whilst the party has had quite a few Scots as leader, and a couple of Welshmen, only Harold Wilson was a northern Englishman.
And with Sunderland and Newcastle now having only one Labour councillor, it strikes me that Streeting just isn't going to cut the mustard in terms of personal appeal north of London.
In this sense, I don't think that's an issue with Burnham who does seem to cut through in the north.
