Summer squad revamp 11:03 - May 12 with 3831 viewsitfcjoe

Out of Contract players:
Harry Clarke - take option and sell
Wes Burns - Mutual release
Conor Chaplin - Release
Conor Townsend - Release
David Button - Release
Cameron Humphreys - Take option and Sell

Other players surplus to requirements:
Ali Al-Hamadi - Loan/Sell
Alex Palmer - Sell
Cieran Slicker - Loan/Sell
Chieo Ogbene - Loan/Sell
Elkan Baggott - Loan
Aro Muric - Loan/Sell
Sam Szmodics - Loan/Sell
Chuba Akpom - Loan/Sell

Remaining squad
XXX = New signing
[Under 21]

GK - XXX, Walton, [Gray]
RB - XXX, Furlong
LB - Davis, XXX
CB - O'Shea, Kipre
CB - XXX, Greaves
CM - XXX, Matusiwa
CM - XXX, Taylor
RW - XXX, McAteer, [Walle Egeli]
10 - XXX, Nunez, Mehmeti
LW - Philogene, Clarke
CF - XXX, Hirst, XXX
Utility - Johnson

This leaves us needing 9 signings to take us up to a 25 man squad, plus potentially another U21 signing which wouldn't count against the cap limit.

Someone like Ben Johnson could also go, but his versatility is useful. Nunez and Mehmeti cover a couple of positions each.

Would be handy if one of the new CFs could also play an alternate attacking role as well just for an extra bit of versatility

Those 9-10 signings will probably end up the thick end of £150m, a massive amount of work to do to get the right quality over the line but those are the positions and roles I'd be targetting

What would be your verdict on Azon (not mentioned at all)?

I think he would be fine, and wouldn't be adverse to it assuming we can get a top guy as well - but think fans would be in meltdown if 2 of our strikers are Hirst and Azon.

Egeli has to stay for me. A full pre-season and keep him close to McKenna/training with a better calibre of player. At a critical stage of his development and a bad loan move is the last thing you want for him. He could be one that really flies next season and he doesn't count towards the squad limit either.

Thinking he needs game time for his development. Have not given up on him at all.

I'd be interested to know what Townsend's fitness is like. It's always difficult to recruit a back-up for Davis so if he's up to it, I wonder if we offer him another year?

More game time is quite a simplistic way of looking at it for me - he plays more games, he gets better. It's not necessarily true. Ultimately he has been signed to be a PL player and this is the level he needs to adjust to. Not sure moving him to a lower level under a worse manager, in another new environment, where he has to settle again is the best thing for him. He is working with one of the best player developers around day in, day out here.

I have a feeling we will ditch Taylor and Hirst this time around
Surely Kipre is competition for greaves not Dara?
I’m also a bit worried we may lose Jaden to turkey

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Poll: With Evans taking 65% in Huddersfield, is the Banter Era over?

Well, we would obviously not loan him out unless we think the environment and level would be of our approval and Egelis benefit. I think it is important as a player to be tested in a competitive environment and feel that you are part of something and are contributing (and I know that this is a strenght of McKenna). I am not sure Humphreys have benefited from not going out on loan very much.

Agree with all bar Hirst, has to go for me. Isnt anywhere near the level needed.

Agree with this list. A part of me feels we might go down the 5-2-3 route and look something like the below.

1st team:

———————————-Walton
————— XXXXXX - O’Shea - Greaves
Johnson ————————————————- Leif
——————— Matusiwa - XXXXXXX
——— XXXXXX —————————— Jaden
——————————— XXXXXX

2nd team:

——————————— Palmer*
—————- Furlong - Kipre - XXXXXXX
McAteer ——————————————— XXXXXX
———————— XXXXXXX - Taylor
——— Egeli ———————————— Clarke
———————————XXXXXXX

*Palmer maybe replaced by Walton if we get a new number 1
Hirst 2nd / 3rd choice
Nunez / Mehmeti - keep 1 in the squad, loan the other

Kipre on the left in the PL...no chance.

Very similar to my thoughts, but have a few different opinions:
I am not sure Kipre will handle the PL, I think he is too slow, not good enough in the air, undecisive (takes long to make up his mind) and his passing is very hit and miss (sometimes brilliant and sometimes very poor). I would rather we find someone that can give DOS a fight for the shirt - but understand we might have other issues that are more important for the time.
I would also put Taylor on the transferlist. Championship is his absolute ceiling. Can´t see him managing PL. This is such an important roll for the team. We need two new in this position. Taylor might be a cheap extra player in the position, but then I would probably rather keep Cajuste instead.
Finally, I don´t think either Nunez nor Mehmeti has showed enough to think they will cut it in the PL. I would prefer if we keep one of them as cover and sell the other. We must find a new first choice number 10. Clarke or Philogene can also be an alternative in the 10 role depending on injuries. And if we let one of Nunez and Mehmeti go, we can maybe buy a left sides player with a bit more speed and physical attributes as an alternative to Clarke and Philogene.
Perhaps also send Egeli out on loan.

I do agree with you on the centre half situation - i'd probably be having 2 in if we can find the right players.

I'd be very interested to know why you would entertain keeping Cajuste at all, let alone over Taylor. Jack has been great this year and honestly didn't disgrace himself last PL season when called upon - he's a squad option at best but head and shoulders over Cajuste in my opinion. I imagine you will say Cajuste was good last time in the PL - but I thought he was overhyped then and his performances then have only strengthened that view.

I'm also baffled that people keep suggesting Clarke and Philogene as nunber 10s when we've seen very little to suggest they can fill that role at Championship level, let alone PL level.

Im very open to this, it looks bang on the money. I do raise three improbable:

Akpom has been as good as useless but might he not be our third striker given he’s on the books, he gets the preseason and we relook at why we even did this! and it would mean realising a loss by loaning / selling to the champ. All im saying is lets manage expectations and how we view the guy because he might end up being at PR 🤦🏻‍♂️

Wes the cult hero surely can stick around

Ben Johnson must have some small sale value we could collect and allow him more game time, not sure we need that kind of versatility, we need serious players in each position and seeing out the season with him on the right midfield means something has gone wrong again!

Not a place for Ogbene? Looked decent when I've seen him for Ireland and has the physicality needed. I wouldn't be starting him but I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay as a a squad filler

To add on Hirst. Not his best season for all round performance yet still managed 0.47 goals per 90.

Johnson was very useful last time around in the PL. Played that right sided role very well in several away games where we needed more defensive stability. And has that PL physicality/athleticism. Expect we will use him similarly at times next season.

Done the same thread from last week. Agree with most but Kipre isn’t anywhere near PL level for me (guess he might be cover of the cover). Still think LW is very un robust if the deal comes in Clarke we maybe replace one of those as well. So much work to do.

Think it’s an area of the club that’s been underwhelming since our first PL promotion. With the amount spent you want more than a few starters and I’m not sure all have held their value. Five starters from league 1 last day against QPR is a good story but also shows missteps.

Thank god for Delap and that Hutchinson went for the money he did. The big test will be if Greaves can be a regular (in a new system maybe) and if O’Shea with the right partner can be a really solid PL center half. Playing Davis in a 4 would be suicidal for a promoted side that wants to be more pragmatic, so I am wondering if a system change comes in.

Also wondering if we bring in a more defensive minded LB to rotate with Leif depending on opposition and game state.

When your defenders best asset is attacking it’s quite a conundrum for a newly promoted PL side. He does get caught ball watching and plays so high I just don’t see a scenario where that’s a plan in a 4.

Just think fact we pushed him out the door so quickly thus year made me think we obviously don’t think he’ll get back to what he was/we wanted him to be

Then barely played at Sheff U this season on loan - he’s surely done here

I suppose the question is whether 5atb or 3 in midfield makes us a more solid unit - personally I think the latter but there are arguments both ways

Looks amazing on paper, how easy is it to have already scouted and sign so many players in such a short period of time.

The worst case signing is it gets to August, they did not get the targets then you having to buy stop gaps like we did last time which end up being very costly errors.

No confidence in Ashton at this level, championship is his level, that seems to be his range of contacts West Brom and Bristol City.

I'm assuming Ogbene is the asset we impaired in the accounts in the knowledge the injury had permanently damaged his value.

I wouldn't ever say Leif gets caught ball watching, but do accept he does get further forward than most and subsequently is working very hard to get back at times and into position.

Much more measured this year in those instances.

Learning.

My only comment is that I have a strong conviction that Matusiwa would be good enough for a starting berth. I also think we will keep Jack Taylor - have people not learnt to stop underestimating him?!
