The way he's played this year, it makes you wonder if his task is simply, go out and be a pain

What's noticeable is that he hasn't developed any guile in that period. It's exactly the same move he did over and over for us, and gave away a free kick almost every time. Not looking at the ball (or pretending to), staring directly at the defender while he lifts his arm, not moving primarily to where the ball will be but to the man... it's just really dopey and transparent.

More yellow cards than goals.

Looks 50/50 to me, Delap just trying to disrupt and hold up the ball. That said, a year of practising this and he's still not much better at it.

It's crazy because he's got the power and strength to win those contests legally. Needs another year with McKenna, but not sure if we need another year with him!

Agreed, surprising his Dad hasn't suggested he looks to change.

I'm so caught

One on hand, we've seen his goal scoring abilities etc

But on the other we've seen his selfishness leading to turnovers leading to goals, and seen his constant need for yellow cards and conceding freekicks

I don't really know if i want him back or not.....................

Yeah McKenna would be great for him. For us, on loan, he’d be better value than the money we’d need to sign someone like him permanently.

Tbh, even when he was with us amidst all hype, I thought he was largely limited in his game. He makes up for that lack of guile and aptitude with brawn , and ges still doing it.

I have watched him many times this season with Chelsea and looks completely out of his depth. I really hope he doesn't return here, because hes not good enough. I wish him well, of course, where ever he ends up but long-term I think he'll eventually drop back to the Championship.

Can also play right wing perfectly adequately as well

Despite the fact I felt Hirst was a better team player towards the end of that season, there's no doubt we could make good use of him on loan and save ourselves a decent wedge.

That £30m fee doesn't seem so 'light' atm does it?

He did glance at the ball to be fair to him, but it might have just been to make sure it wasn’t going to land on his head and interrupt his assaulting and battering.

I also think we need to move on, I watched him in the Chelsea game last night and thought he was poor. On a personal note I really disliked the way he downed tools at the point we needed him to differently was frankly appalling and unprofessional.

Yeah the hype came from some early ‘worldie’ goals or close calls (eg at Brighton), but realistically he was never likely to keep that up, and his general play wasn’t the best - albeit, he was fairly well suited to a counter-attacking relegation side.

He’s far more well known now though, and his game is very easy to ‘work out’ / wind up.

I guess that in today's day and age, that is a foul, but actually, is it really a foul at all?!
I know that he has had a bad season at Chelsea, compounded by injuries and Joao Pedro's excellent form. He could and can be frustrating with those needless fouls. He could do with a bit more coaching and KM is one of the best coaches around imho particularly with young players. He also somewhat downed tools/lost heart/knew he was going to Chelsea in the second half of the season with us. l also agree with the poster who said at times Hirst was a better team player than Delap.
But for all that, watch his goals for us on youtube. He would be a tremendous signing on loan ( permanent never going to happen atm, he is on 100k a week! ) If we sign a better striker than him, or even as good as him it would be remarkable business ! Forget his form for Chelsea, a year ago the media were talking about him replacing Kane for England. Honestly, some of our fans are absolutely deluded saying ' we don't want him ' If we could get him on loan and it is a very big if, it would be fantastic. The learned town fans amongst us do know that, right?!

I still reckon theres a proper centre forward in there given games and top coaching, his performance at Bournemouth was the first time i saw him as a striker playing for and with the team. He meshed brilliantly especially with Broady and got a great goal into the bargin!

Huge potential, that isn’t suited to flourishing in an environment like Chelsea’s.

That being said, I’d trust Alonso far more than Rosenior/caretaker - but I expect he’ll want better.

Agreed. He's got all the physical attributes, but none of the mental ones. Fouly and runs up too many cul-de-sacs, losing possession. Heading isn't great either. Prem relegation near-favourites can't be too choosy, but let's not pretend we'd sign Harry Kane v2. He'll never be top-of-prem or Champions League quality.

100%.

We need 2 centre forwards. Get one in who knows the club, the players, the manager. Has a great physical profile and has scored goals for us in the prem before.

Then go and get creative and try and find someone abroad whose game translates well to England.

Happy days.

I am with you on whether that is a foul.

My sense is that it is SO difficult as a striker to win that dual - I reckon you have a one in ten chance - if the striker puts the same amount of force into the challenge as the defender, the defender gets the benefit of the doubt every time. I almost wonder if the best course of action is to leave the defender alone completely, hope that they miscontrol the ball, and hope that the ball breaks in your direction.
