| Starmer urges TNT Sports to show Champions League final for free 09:15 - May 24 with 1923 views | Mark | Why should TNT hold this power? UEFA are letting fans down again by giving TNT a contract which allows them to charge for the final. The government should add it to the list of games which must be shown for free, along with the World Cup, England matches and FA Cup final. https://www.itv.com/news/2026- | | | | |

I’m with BT(EE), so get HBO. Watched the Villa game the other night. Will watch Palace and the champions league final as it’s in my deal. Apart from that HBO is well over rated. Nothing on there that interests me that Im desperate to watch.

No wonder kids aren’t into it when they don’t have the access to it as they grow up. We’ve seen it with so many sports like boxing etc once it goes off mainstream it’s hard to grow it in the next generation. Part of the conditions for the rights to all major competitions should be having to air the final for free.

Would it be that easy to do mid-contract? If the Government tries to force TNT to make the European finals free-to-air next season, TNT will no doubt complain that they wouldn't have paid so much for the contract if they'd have known that they couldn't rinse fans for the finals.

Any young kids with access to just terrestrial television will grow up thinking football is primarily a female sport

Not easy, it would kick off big time, but i think they would gain some political credit in doing it.

It's certainly the sort of thing that an ailing Starmer, or a fresh Burnham could do to earn some vital political capital. I'd be all for it.

| Starmer urges TNT Sports to show Champions League final for free on 13:19 - May 24 with 1254 views | J2BLUE | Because they paid for the rights. Starmer has no right to demand they air it for free although clearly that should be a condition of all future contracts. | | | |

What were UEFA thinking by agreeing a contract with TNT which stopped fans watching the final without paying? How can that be in the interests of the sport? It should be a requirement that the final is shared with a free to air channel such as ITV. England matches are all on free to air TV, although I remember Sky had some a few years ago. I thought that was awful, as England are our national side!
| Starmer urges TNT Sports to show Champions League final for free on 20:46 - May 24 with 940 views | darkhorse28 | Because they paid for it. Not ideal. But we kinda enjoyed spending £200 million of TV money in the last 18 months, so we’d be very hypocritical to criticise TV money in football. Got to pay the piper. They don’t pay all that money for giggles. | | | |

We’re well beyond the interests of fans and the sport in general, unfortunately. I agree with you, but we’re increasingly in the minority.

UEFA to do things "in the interests of the sport". Nice idea but not likely. The club and player organisations EFC and FIFPRO could stand up to UEFA for the fans but wouldn't as the tv money benefits them and UEFA will say clubs and players are the sport. Not fans.

I've got the free version of HBO included in my Sky package. That had the Villa game on free to view. Do you know if the Champions League final is the same?

As you likely know, the first step to football sanity is to take the TV money out of the equation! Life is for living, not to be watched!

Yeah, if you could see Villa you’ll be able to see the others. All three are being shown through the HBO basics plan with Sky /Now TV Entertainment.

TV companies have paid for Champions' League rights for years, but this is the first time the final is not free to watch. Most TV money goes on ever higher player wages, so we don't 'enjoy' it as such at Premier League level as other clubs have the same or more. Yes, it is to our advantage against Championship clubs of course.

How would that even work? How many different countries compete under their umbrella? How would they make money as business giving something away for free?

You can't easily add to the list of free to air sports at all It needs to go to the governing bodies if those sports for a start, which I can't imagine UEFA are going to be too happy about. It would considerably lower the value of any future contracts as well. A quick Google will show you how contested the process is

Surprised competitive England matches aren't considered part of the "crown jewels of sport". Full list below, which I always found interesting. Removing test cricket from the list had a really damaging impact on the popularity of the sport. I'd definitely look to bring that back https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

The Euros & World Cup finals have to be on free to air TV. Hardly anyone watches even the qualifiers, let alone the friendly games so it would be ridiculous to list them.
