Its a remarkable achievement - bettered only by our 2021 team. I feel a little guilty hoping that they suffer the same struggles as we did in our second season!

Sunderland only made the playoffs by four points having taken 4 against us. Fair to say they would have taken fewer points against KM so wouldn't have made the playoffs. Who knows how the next 4 years would have gone for both of us! [Post edited 24 May 22:49]

The comparisons are very different though. In the past 25 years, where we spent most of that stagnating in the Championship and then L1, Sunderland have spent 15 seasons in the PL. they’ve been through some rough patches in the last 5 years, but they were still much closer to operating PL infrastructure than we were 2 years ago. So yes, we should applaud them but it doesn’t particularly reflect badly on us.

For what it's worth, Sunderland may have been in L1 but they were a Premier League set-up who had fallen to L1. You can't underestimate what a mess we were. Even before Marcus Evans had come to us and gradually eroded our club it had been 5 years since we were in the Premier League. We were on the way to L2 if anywhere and had none of the structure in place for PL football when Gamechanger took over or when we got to the PL. Sunderland had that structure in place. That doesn't takeaway from Sunderland's achievements though. What they have achieved this season, for the modern day PL this quickly is remarkable and all credit to them. But you're comparing different 'journeys' from different starting positions. Well done Sunderland, it's a win for English football, as is Arsenal's title win and Bournemouth qualifying for Europe.

Great post. Spot on. I hope they are able to kick on from it and their European fun doesn’t take too much away from them next season. My chums tell me the Stadium of Light is to receive a significant upgrade and capacity increase. Their season ticket waiting list is 15,000. A club on the up and good for them. Somebody described Sunderland’s success as ‘a blueprint’. It isn’t for the reasons you give. Every club is different and what works for one won’t work for another. What you can and should do in my view is take lessons from others, both successes and failures along with the good and bad your own performance. Continuous improvement is a bullsht bingo term, but it does work. So well done Sunderland, Bournemouth, Brighton and Arsenal.

Sunderland's season ticket waiting list is 15,000 and yet some on here don't believe ours is 6000.

Yep, I take that - excellent response. I hadn't quite taken into account the 20 years of unarrested decline we'd had cp to Sunderlands more recent expereince. But given the general chatter about the gulf in class between the champ and the prem Im massively impressed with how well they have done this season (especially given we pinched Clarke off them and they othen only got up through the play offs). Its going to be very, very interesting to watch our recruitment this time - what did we learn and how have we developed since last time? Can luat Ashton really able to get a prdm CIO?
