My issue with Delap last time was that as the season progressed he got less effective. Early on the fact he wasn't a team player was OK because he was scoring and causing trouble whenever he got the ball. By the end, he just ran until he lost it almost every time, and off the ball he became a thug. At Chelsea his thug tendencies seem to have grown more than his football ones, which is a shame.

He's obviously a talented player and we do need someone who can work on the break but he'll need to learn to be more of a team player if we are to do better than last time.

I said to my Chelsea supporting mate when they bought him, that he could either be a revelation for them or a flop, but I didn't see much in between (as in, a steady, off-the-bench option).

I think he gets too frustrated. When he's not scoring or his team is losing, he doesn't seem to pull his socks up and put in more of a shift, he just charges after defenders and clatters them. Saw him do it a fair bit for us and he's done it for Chelsea, too.

Needs to be the big man, and needs to be on top form. If either of those things aren't happening I think he becomes a bit of a hindrance.

He's still young and maybe another season or two with KM will coach that side out of him, but he'd still be a big risk. He's not the dead-cert match winner that some people on here make him out to be. Will he come back from Chelsea with an even bigger ego?

Delap on his own wasn't enough last time. We need a player of his quality and I don't see any reason to think Parrott is any better. I don't think we should be looking at signing strikers of a lower level. If that's all we can get we will continue to struggle in that department.

Delap was on his own as he mainly chose to be after a great few months, as shown by being a better team with Hirst in it.

Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg.

Well I don't think his season at Chelsea has progressed his career. He also spent 4 or 5 months when he clearly didn't want to be here. I'm just not a fan.

Why do you think he spent 4 months not wanting to be here? That's just rubbish.

I wonder what the response on here would be if our first choice striker next season had just had their most prolific season ever, scoring 8 goals whilst on loan to Hull.....

This site would go into meltdown....

Would depend on how many minutes he was on the pitch for in the Championship, not games, that's largely irrelevant. So 1000 minutes or 2000 plus? The fact that he's in the Championship would suggest that it's more likely than not he wouldn't be good enough anyway. Of course you're refering to a certain Mr Delap. Without doubt, one really good season in a struggling PL team. One good season does not a striker make however, ask Chuba Akpom. If he goes on to prove he can do it more than once in the PL whether here or elsewhere, I'll be one of the first to say well done. Until then, a watching brief.

What has Delsp shown in a better team this season in the PL, that makes you believe he should be our main striker?

We will be in a low block, and his pace and power in transition will be as key as it was before.

Against a low block he’s not really got the confidence and attributes…, we won’t face a single low block at this level - every team will expect to take us on, and beat us.

Suspect (if fit) he’d do well again.

On his fitness, he was very injury prone before we had him, had an injury free season, and had been injury prone again…., that would concern me more than his ability, we couldn’t rely on him as a main striker, fitness wise.

I don’t know how to look at TP. If he was a dead cert a top 10 team will compete for his signature. If there is more risk than that will we be priced out in that we cant take expensive gambles unless their is a clear path to resale.

Are we talking dead cert parrots here?

Isac Lidberg

This guy doesn't even play in the Bundesliga. He plays in the second tier.

Were we actually a better team with Hirst in it?

In the games that Delap played less than 45mins we:

lost 4-3 to Brentford (Delap played 17mins)
lost 4-0 to Newcastle (Delap suspended)
drew 2-2 with Chelsea (Delap played 19mins)
Lost 4-0 to Arsenal (Delap played 8mins, Hirst also injured)
lost 2-0 to Leicester (Delap played 19mins)
Lost 3-1 to West Ham (Delap played 20mins)

Not a lot results-wise to suggest we were an better off with Hirst up top instead of Delap.

That Brentford game was a weird one. 2-0 up after 43 minutes, yet went into the break 2-2 and then the Clarke horror show with a penalty and red card to start the second half. If we went in 2-0 up at half time, it might have been a great example, but we were just too fragile as a team.

Also ironically (for this discussion), it was Delap who should have saved us a point against all odds.

I think Hirst was a better fit tactically, but he just wasn't/isn't the quality we need to lead a Premier League line-up. I would be happy for him to stay, but I think he needs to be our 3rd choice Number 9, not close to being starter.

Signing a genuine 10 is nearly as big (if not bigger) priority than a striker to lead the line. We’ve not had a consistent performer in that position since Chappers in 23/24.

Smodz as a ‘second striker’ didnt work. Nunez has done alright but patchy, same with Mehmeti.

Need to invest some serious dollar in a creative 10 who can pull the strings and knock in a few goals
