If so, I'll have some of what you're on.

Define “we”!

India and China building dozens of coal-fired power stations each year, and the UK emits less than 1% of carbon output globally. There is a bigger picture, and I’m not convinced that me using a paper straw rather than a plastic one will help save the human race.

China also lead the world by far in renewables and are increasing that all the time. On a per capita basis, their emissions are half that of the US and roughly at parity with ours.

The argument that we shouldn't do anything because of China isn't a good one in my view.

India certainly are a long way behind China in this regard.

There's alot of climate scientists on here. You've all been fed this bs for so long you think it must be true.

It seems a lot of what is going on is due to the jet stream which is affected by temperature rises in the Arctic.

https://livetoplant.com/how-cl

"Arctic amplification has far-reaching effects on atmospheric circulation patterns. As the Arctic warms more rapidly than lower latitudes:

1. The temperature contrast between polar air masses and mid-latitude air masses decreases.

2. This reduces the pressure gradient that drives jet stream winds.

3. Consequently, the jet stream slows down or becomes more “wavy,” with larger north-south excursions called Rossby waves.

A slower jet stream means that weather systems tend to move more slowly across continents. This can lead to prolonged periods of particular weather conditions such as heatwaves, cold spells, droughts, or heavy rainfall — all of which have been increasingly observed in recent years."

On the other hand, the AMOC/Gulf Stream is slowing down as temperatures rise and Ice melt dilutes the waters. If it switches off completely, we drop 5 to 10 degrees in the UK.

Swings and roundabouts! However, I understand it's not expected to switch off anytime this century.

Damn! That paper straw changeover drive was the only chance we had, and you've just indisputably debunked it.

Add to that, you've clearly illustrated that the UK exists in complete isolation with nobody else being able to see what we're doing let alone follow our lead, and you're right - there's absolutely no point doing anything apart from sitting on our fat, cowardly arses with our fingers in our ears, pretending nothing's happening as interrelated systems collapse one after another.

Nice one.

Just wondering if it's something that ever factors into baking hot British summer days as it does in Florida. Heat factor index here always rises another 5 or so degrees above the announced maximum temperature. Example, todays local high was 93f and the news weather guy said with heat index feels like 98f! Perhaps that's because of the high humidity in Florida and that doesn't really happen in Blighty!

In this country, the Met Office figures have on them a "feels like" temperature which is sometimes higher and sometimes lower than the actual temperature.

And to be honest, even though temperatures have reached around 33 where I live, I don't think it's felt exceptionally warm. Nor have I had difficulty sleeping. Indeed, the feels like temperatures predicted today are about 3 degrees lower than the actual temperature.

Another difference here is the relative lack of intensity of the sun, compared to lower latitudes such as Spain, and obviously Florida.

But humidity can be a factor too, as I found out when in New York many years ago. And I believe the many buildings in big cities can add to the heat too.

This may blow your mind, but it is possible to enjoy yourself outside AND have a discussion sharing concerns about the longer term.

Or should we just shut down all discussion about anything that could be deemed negative?

Total shutdown is not expected this century, but a point of no return (tipping point) and major slowdown (with catastrophic consequences for the UK and Europe) are being seriously considered as imminent possibilities, along with the destabilising consequences on other interrelated systems.

Although having that conversation on the internet may be counter productive. The internet and digital technology are estimated to be responsible for 2.5% to 3.7% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Are you sure those figures are correct?

USA produces 13.83 tons per capita. China produces 9.24 tons per capita. UK produces 4.42 tons per capita.

And of we are going per capita then China generates roughly 2.2 MWh of renewable energy per person annually whereas the UK produces 2 MWh of renewable energy per person, so not much difference.

I love how every time we have a discussion about this, the default rebuttal is 'but what about 1976', a year where the temperature was so remarkably high that people who weren't even born remember it.

If that's the baseline we're working from, the reference point against which each record breaking temperature is compared, then it sums up how far in denial so many people are.

And there is very much a pattern both here and in the US about supporting Reform/Restore/MAGA and this climate science denial.

It's almost like they'll believe anything their masters tell them
