| Will we offer a new contract ? on 09:54 - Jun 10 with 2612 views | PhilTWTD | I think it's a slightly different situation as I don't think Fulham is a live situation as such. Two years ago him moving to Brighton was a definite possibility, indeed it very nearly happened. This time, from my understanding, the Fulham reports are based on false information, as Tony Khan alluded to. Had a whisper where they might have come from, but not definitively enough to say publicly. That could change, of course, but hearing from various angles that it's not something which is ongoing. And people who might just clam up if something were happening saying it's not, if that makes sense. | | | |
| Will we offer a new contract ? on 10:01 - Jun 10 with 2508 views | baxterbasics | I think that for now, as much as I want him to stay, McKenna is maxed-out contract wise. He's on very good terms and plenty of time left. We won't be offering him better, or an extension, and that is probably correct. There's a limit for ITFC and we shouldn't be held to ransom. He goes, or stays on current terms. If the coming season is a successful one and we stay PL, then I'm sure we'll talk. | |

His release clause is eye watering and I expect a big factor in why they aren't pursuing him as a first choice. It sounds like we need to hope they have a couple of other options up their sleeve and one of them comes off. You have to say MA did very well to negotiate that release clause in his contract as it seems really prohibitive to KM/his (very experienced) agent.

Yes, it is very helpful. As it stands, I don't think Fulham are willing to pay it and are looking at other targets having not really had a plan as they didn't think Marco Silva was leaving. Possible they could eventually decide to push for Kieran, but there's been no approach and don't believe one is being anticipated.

Ha, thought it was time for a change from the giant glass elephant hotel. Coming back to Kieran-Fulham, I think Tony Khan's 'don't believe everything you hear' was a direct reference to Talksport as he has a pop at them elsewhere in the interview for a report relating to Silva's departure.

This is both good and bad news. Great if another option comes off, but we could end up in a situation where Fulham have exhausted all their other options and start negotiating with ITFC/McKenna in the last week of June.

"I expect a big factor in why they aren't pursuing him as a first choice" I think the biggest factor is that there is absolutely zero evidence that McKenna can make a significant impact in the Premier League, he is totally unproven. I don't see he is a massive pull, not for top quality Premier League players. There are also huge question marks over: - How he might handle being under 'real' pressure - How he might handle bigger name players - Whether he can actually out-think some of the top Premier League managers

We can't say he doesn't deserve it based on what he has done for us so far, however he still needs to fully prove his worth by keeping us in the EPL.

This is how I see it, last season in the prem was poor, no established premier league teams fans would be happy with Kmac, which is not a great start and if the initial couple of months go badly then the pressure is really on, and with the compensation fee would be Chelsea levels of cash burning but they may have no choice to sack ala Igor Tudor. Would be an odd move all round, though I can’t help going back to Kmacs first words in promotion about it being a very difficult season for a number of reasons, which felt a little odd.

That will depend on entirely how the owners view him. If they see him as being instrumental for the club strategy, they may well want to tie him up for longer than his current contract. If we stay up next season, he will be in a much stronger position to negotiate a new contract, whereas if we offer one now with significant performance bonuses, and equally significant relegation penalties, we would be well protected and McKeenna would be backing himself for a successful PL campaign.

I'm not sure about that at all. Palace and Brighton both offered him the job and didn't have those concerns. His stock in the game is very, very high. But he is on a monster deal here with a huge release clause. £8m (plus any extras depending what staff he wants to take with him) and his salary is somewhere between £5-£8m per year depending on who you believe.

Appears no approach has been made and he is already on a mega contract. 2. Not about money with McKenna more the ambition and hunger to manage at a higher level.

I agree with your first paragraph, if KMc were to go elsewhere in the PL and got off to a poor start, then their fans would use his record in his only season in the PL with us as a stick with which to beat their CEO/sporting director. I think there were a lot of obvious reasons why it was a difficult season, the player turnover was greater than expected, far too many signings came in late and we never really hit our straps and went on a long run of wins as in the previous promotion seasons. There was always a Wrexham or Portsmouth result tripping us up. Also a few key injuries here and there and one or two signings not working out, Jens especially, were other issues.

I think the Hutchinson saga was something he found frustrating, not only the late sale but his behavior towards the end.

Yep there were a lot of known reason for a difficult season, and maybe he just didn’t want to dwell on them at what should be a point of celebration, However it felt an odd thing to say at that moment and I could be reading more into it but felt he wanted to say more.

Losing Leif to a ridiculous suspension at a key time was another obstacle, and then match-by-match penalty decision not going our way at one point which might have cost us dearly. And we didn't even know about the spying before the season was over!

No greater challenges than any side, only with three times their resources. The reasons we’ve struggled is our talent ID is average at best, poor relative to elite clubs (our size) in the premier league, and although McKenna is clearly v talented at coaching, the last two groups he’s struggled to get the best out of. Can’t keep making excuse after excuse for 22 point seasons, and being behind Coventry and Milwall and many others adjusted for resources. We punched below our weight, achieving our goals mitigates that, but it doesn’t change how talented he is or isn’t. Maybe you’ll need to process he’s not elite, or the messiah and levels in football matter. If he go’s it’s a fantastic opportunity. But we need a manager if Ashton stays.., winging recruitment at this level doesn’t work. We don’t have the structure to support someone like McKenna and that’s the real issue. Leifs suspension should have been a straight red, and Brum had a bonkers goal disallowed.., we were promoted by a point - if anyone want a lucky general McKenna will too the list. V talented coach, works his socks off, deserves his luck, but he had it in doades this season and the mast promotion too.., wouldn’t appoint him at Fulham, but I think they will.., and he clearly wants to go - yet again lifting his skirt and not distancing himself. There’s a lack of respect and integrity in McKenna getting his agents to speak to all out competition when his stocks high.., every time.
