Massive. But also..... a manager host the most leverage mid season!!

He mayve seen how well being available mid season worked for Carrick.

evidently has zero confidence in keeping us up.

now we know why the americans were over today - to discuss the new boss.

huge amount of naivety amongst the defenders of the faith on this board dismissing all of us with concerns about McKenna going.

I think maybe you weren't around when the two Sirs left. One of them, I wouldn't argue, but not the top one or two.

I assume you weren’t around when SBR left for the England job? That was truly devastating given where we were - even more so than when SAR left. Both trump this by a long way.

Kieran leaving for a break is disappointing and unexpected, but not seismic. This is the end of the beginning, and the next chapter is exciting. I won’t say I’m not sad that Kieran won’t be steering that ship, but I’m excited by the doors this potentially opens.

Bill McGarry, leaving us the season after he got us promoted to the top division, but it didn't turn out too bad; we got Bobby Robson!

One thought that occurred to me was that maybe after some 'time out' he'll go back to Manchester United now that Carrick has been confirmed. They have been friends for a very long time, and I just think he might relish working with players that are on average just that bit better than what he's worked with to date.

I can't think of any really famous double acts at the top level since Clough & Taylor, but under Ferguson Man U. did appoint some pretty high-profile first team coaches.

No, Faragegate was far worse!

Perhaps it was the main reason for his departure, and he couldn't stand the prospect of working with the two-faced Ashton for another season!

(conspiracy theory nonsense of course)

If, as has been suggested, worries about a second relegation have played a part, I can't see that a mid-season appointment will appeal to him. Anything coming up in December/January is going to be all about fire-fighting.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

My recall is that SBR leaving was well telegraphed. It was between him and Clough in the press when Greenwood announced he’d be going after 82 and the FA were never going for Clough. We all knew it was coming.

When it was confirmed early in July, yes it was well known it was happening. However, when the season came to an end, there was no thought that Robson would not be at the helm the following season but a few short weeks later the bombshell dropped that he was in the running for the England job, and likely to get it. That was devastating and quite unexpected. The fact that it took a few weeks to be finalised didn’t make it any less so.

I thought it was done earlier than that.

Didn’t SBR even join the squad in Spain to get acquainted early doors?
