| I know I’ve asked this before but with Kieran leaving 08:57 - Jun 11 with 1136 views | Ftnfwest | How many managers have we ever actually sacked? The next guy will I think be the 20th permanent manager but it’s only 6 or 7 we’ve ever sacked I think (and 3 of those immediately before Kieran) | | | | |
| I know I’ve asked this before but with Kieran leaving on 09:19 - Jun 11 with 1021 views | GlasgowBlue | I make it 9. Ferguson, Duncan, Lyall/ McGiven, Burley, Magilton, Keane, Hurst, Lambert, Cook. | |

Was Ferguson sacked or was his contract not renewed?

From Sheepshanks’ interview the other day I think he was. It was either that or ‘mutual consent’ whatever those mealy mouthed words mean. One manager on the sack list is Mick O’Brien who was the manager when the club turned professional but before it was elected to the Football League. He was fired for an ‘indiscretion’. From wiki. “ After several near misses, the club were relegated in 1986, and Ferguson was given an ultimatum that he would be dismissed if Ipswich were not promoted immediately back; they lost 2–1 on aggregate to Charlton Athletic in the 1987 play-off semi-finals.[7] Ferguson became the first Ipswich manager to be sacked”

Cheers - always had it in my head that his contract wasn’t renewed. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

But Lyall technically wasn't manager at the time, McGiven was even if the club history recorded it differently and Lyall simply was 'manager' in name only, but certainly played no part in any matchday in the 94/95 season. Regardless, Lyall resigned, we didnt sack him

I thought Lyall went upstairs in a director of football role, very early days of such roles. Mcgiven was the manager and then Lyall had to come back and manage, Mcgiven demoted to coach.

Pretty sure Duncan’s contract wasn’t renewed. But it is really a distinction without a difference. Especially in those days.

There's no difference, ask a lawyer.

Can anyone verify this? Must be some sort of record if true

Bill McGarry resigned to go off to manage Wolves but I think he is the only one. We got Bobby Robson instead; thank you Bill and Wolves. Just had a look at the Watford managers as someone mentioned that. 11 permanent Watford managers since Kieran took over in 2021. They've had 20 managers in the last twelve years and 31 in the 26 years of this century. Plus several caretakers.
