'And look at what we’ve achieved in just two years: an economy that is stronger, growing faster than our peers; wages rising faster than inflation in every single month since we came to power; investment secured; infrastructure being built; an end to austerity; with the fastest fall in NHS waiting lists for 17 years; the biggest improvement in rights for workers and renters in a generation; the biggest uplift in defence spending since the Cold War; small boat crossings falling; asylum hotels closing; protecting young people from social media; and half a million children being lifted out of poverty because of the choices that I made.

Our reputation in the world restored, with Britain once again standing up for decency, respect, and the rule of law. Securing trade deals, standing with Ukraine, standing up for our values, and rebuilding our relationship with our allies in Europe.'

From Keir's email to me yesterday, I think one or two people may have gotten teh same...

All of which are broadly true arent they? Which is what is so troubling. The perception and the facts are so far apart. That is the media / social media environment we are now in, and we are in serious trouble as a result.

Leaving aside the specific example of Starmer, surely you can see that progressive politicians who make claim to high principles are much more likely to a) be accused of hypocrisy and b) disappoint people than those who simply appeal to naked self interest, or sectional interest?

Which is the gist of that article.

There was a subversion campaign against Corbyn from the Labour Centrists.

There was a purge of Corbynistas once Starmer became leader.

Whether you believe that was a hypocritical, nakedly self-serving power grab by a man who claimed the "decent and principled" mantle, or believe it was a necessary act for the good of the party and the nation, comes down to interpretation.

Indeed. What it wasnt, though, was surreptitious and deceitful.

It was dishonest for Starmer to say recently that removing the benefits cap was his finest achievement when the whip was withdrawn from several MPs who voted for it during the King's Speech.

£32k of work clothing
2.5k of spectacles
Clothing for his wife
The use of a central London apartment when we were locked down.

He had to recategorise a number of items as gifts rather than for his office.

I think you're reading of the postponed elections is a little positive, given the screeching u-turn.

Madelson, twice (was it) sacked from government was fast tracked at Starmer's insistence. A real man of integrity.

Oh dear indeed.

Please for the love of god read into the topics rather than just accepting what is served up!

On the half a million children being lifted out of poverty alone re lifting the two child cap - he removed the whip from his MPs for backing it!!!!

And another top tip for centrists dads obsessed with Brexit. It's Starmer that handed you the hardest Brexit possible because of his actions as shadow Brexit secretary.

He was the very opposite of a decent honest chap. Johnson has more integrity frankly.

Stop swallowing the lazy media line and read up on what actually happened!

the opposition could have voted with may to get something better i guess. the hope of reversing the whole thing meant the opposition missed the opportunity to compromise. but i can't say i've memorised all the details.

My understanding is that Starmer was lobbying for a second referendum and convinced Corbyn to whip Labour MPs to vote against the May deal which would have kept us in the customs union.

Losing that vote cost her the Premiership and heralded Boris Johnson.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

Also true to say the IMF has revised its projections for the UK to have the lowest per capita growth in the G7 this year, and deteriorating youth unemployment seeing the UK have the 3rd highest rate of NEETS in Europe.

Goes back to my earlier point about disingenuous government reporting.

It was a tongue in cheek post for the most part, but there is a point to be made for people who appear to believe all that the media they subscribe to serves up for them and the compensating benefit of belonging to a party with all the trials and tribulations that brings.

(Left of Centrist Dad to grown up kids and have wanted Burnham as Prime Minister for the last year.)

Sorry - one more from me.

The claim that Labour have 'turned the economy around' is utterly lamentable.

Record high tax burden
Growth downgraded
Unemployment rising, including a youth unemployment crisis.
Real wages falling
Welfare bill through the roof (over 25% rise expected in this parliament)
No houses being built.

But this thread does make it look that way. A three word thread title and Benters is getting pelters from 'em.

The record tax burden was achieved under the last government.

Growth is as good as its been for years (not great) bar one spike. And was plummeting like a lead shot prior to this government who have arrested that fall and turned it in the other direction.
Yes- there is a youth unemployment crisis. They are looking to address it. Its no huge surpriuse given the cuts to health and mental health services and the impact of covid on young peoples mental health.
Real terms wages have increased. They fell under the previous regime.
Welfare bill very similar to what it has been for years. One of the largest chunks is the previous governments triple lock and the reality of demographics and an ageing society. Perhaps we need some immigration to support that...
Houses are being built- though there is only a modest increase from previously so far.

My memory is crap at the best of times, but was this the deal where we'd keep a few bits of access, but give up all control over making the rules? If so, I'd rather be completely out and have some control, or in with some control.

(of course, I could be misremembering and howling at the moon!)

Extraordinary stuff.

Of course its our business when a politican takes £5m from a clearly politically interested party and fails to declare it or answer any questions about it. And then gives three different explanations.

it's the same as when the jewish and black kids from his pubic school revealed his antisemitic and racist bullying.

flip-flopped from denial and blaming the victims, to pretending that this was ok at the time, then trying to shut down any discussion.

such a weak man, falls apart at the slightest hint of scrutiny; can't think of anyone less suited to be leader of a country (well maybe equal to the usa's orange incumbent)
