| Initial analysis of the current heatwave 08:06 - Jun 26 with 15052 views | StokieBlue | Scientists have said that the current heatwave stretching across Europe would have been impossible in June without climate change and is also hitting hard as the weather is more humid than normal. "As recently as 2003, a heatwave like the current one in Europe would have been 2C cooler due to the lower level of global heating at the time. In 1976, another famous heatwave year, it would have been 3.5C cooler." "The sweltering night-time temperatures currently harming people’s sleep are about 100 times more likely today than in 2003." https://www.theguardian.com/en SB | |

On that note - I'm off to see Metallica twice at the weekend! Not really got any playlists to share, but Gojira (supporting Metallica) are new to me, despite being around for years, and are ace. Not new new, but the Petrodragonic apocalypse album by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is great, as is Heavy Pendulum by Cave In.

"I'm not doubting global warming". Then proceeds to poison the well with the classic theory and reasoning put out by climate change deniers. Antarctica didn't even exist when the dinosaurs were around, it was a single supercontinent called Pangea with no land masses near the polar regions. Antarctica as a land mass of any significance on its own didn't migrate to the pole until 35-40m years ago and the dinosaurs were long gone. Plate tectonics is a thing. SB [Post edited 29 Jun 21:06]

It’s from 70 million years ago. At that time, Antarctica was covered in lush forests. The Cretaceous period as it’s known was ended by an asteroid strike. You are correct about climate change happening several times over millions of years, however, the current global climate change is more to do with human behaviour than naturally occurring events. Planet earth will always adapt, I fear though that humankind will be the architect of its own downfall.

Indeed. Scientists are already predicting that the gulf stream may turn off earlier than expected. That will give us winters on a par with northern Canada and play havoc with other weather patterns.

Thank you Benters. We are bringing our daughter home. I posted last month that, despite her earlier struggles with mental health, my youngest had taken the decision to move to Australia for a year. We talked through the challenges she would face and were always worried that it would be s step too far in her journey. But she is a strong independent 19 year old and we were always going to back whatever decision she made. The plan was that she would spend the first month with my cousin’s family before travelling around Oz. We’ve been in regular contact with her and had noticed a sharp decline in her mood as the weeks have passed. Having spoken to my cousin’s wife we found out that Lilly was spending more and more time isolating herself in her bedroom. She would travel on the bus to various beaches during the day, then coming home, locking herself in her bedroom and crying herself to sleep. She wasn’t coming out for meals. We made a last minute decision to fly over and give whatever support we could. To see if we could get her back on track with the plans she had originally made but she is deeply unhappy and wants to return. She is desperately concerned that we would be disappointed and view her as a failure. Nothing could be further from the truth. We are immensely proud of her.

It takes a hell of a lot of bottle to even try something like that and a lot of maturity to admit it's not working out and move on to something else. Respect to her.

Kudos to your daughter for taking such a brave step. As the saying goes, it's better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all. Hopefully she won't be put off doing something similarly courageous in the future, but maybe not quite such a big step. [Post edited 30 Jun 7:16]

I wasn't poisoning the well, just pointing out that Antarctica wasn't always a frozen wasteland, which in your post you confirmed. As I said the Earth has gone through many changes in its life time climate change being one. Do we need to change our energy habits yes. I was just pointing out other factor's are involved. As Benter's pointed out China, India & US contribute far more to poisoning our Planet than we do.

But you're pushing the main misinformation used by the climate change denial lobby. It's not scientifically correct and it's a distraction from the actual issues. I suggest you do some reading around the argument you're making. Antarctica not being frozen had absolutely nothing to do with climate change. So if someone else does something bad we should as well? That's a terrible argument. As other posters have pointed out, China is leading the way in renewables and that will only increase. SB

China are miles ahead of the world on renewables as they realised that investing in future technology, not getting yourself stuck in the past, was the sensible thing to do. Trump etc are scared of change (and know that it takes careful planning) and so concoct a denial line about climate change so they can keep the existing economy chugging along. That will be fine in his, very limited, lifetime. Not so great for future generations though. India are moving to renewables too, but their economy has grown relatively recently so, if existing economies are scared to change it's no surprise they haven't jumped at it straight away. Any argument that we shouldn't do something because others don't is always a poor one. Especially here, where the world kind of depends on it. We are still (at the moment) an influential nation. If we can't be bothered to change the likes of India can use that as an excuse not to bother. It's such a non-argument. The fact is, we have to change, the question is, how do we go about it, not should we bother?

I do wonder if people really understand what China has been doing over the last 10-15 years. Whilst the west has been lead by people denying human made climate change, in the face of all scientific evidence, and people saying it is just weather, let’s keep drilling etc.. China has the largest percentage of GDP generating from green tech, of any country, it has the worlds largest wind farms, solar farms, EV battery and car manufacturing. Did they do that to appease leftie snowflakes worried about it being a bit hotter than 1976? Or are they now selling green tech to Asia, North Africa, and ….people should like this… Saudi Arabia. I recall it used to be part of the narrative driven by the US climate change deniers in the early part of the century, don’t worry about climate change, human ingenuity will find solutions if and when it becomes necessary. Yep, that happened, it seems to be called renewable energy. Maybe someone in China liked science and experts.

All that being said, the UK is still on target to reach net zero before China… As for human ingenuity, a lot of their tech is reverse engineered from other countries due to lack of IP laws, hence why western firms are increasingly reluctant to invest there. Pretty cheap to produce when you can use forced labour too, the West can’t possibly (and shouldn’t) compete with that.

'Did they do that to appease leftie snowflakes worried about it being a bit hotter than 1976? ' Now that is a very good point to make to the stupid, dangerous, pr!cks we have in the West who talk about CC remediation actions as "woke" etc. China, the major country which is the least "woke" in the world is actually the one which has the clarity and sense to rapidly build a viable green economy* with absolutely zero pressure from its citizens. That should tell us in the West, whether in power or the public, exactly what the cold, hard reality of the situation is. People who still push CC denial are scum, from the orange slug pr!ck downwards (or upwards). [* edit: for clarity, that's a viable green economy within a still ungreen economy, but it's huge and the direction of travel is positive] [Post edited 30 Jun 10:37]
