Got a knock on my door 1am Monday morning 13:46 - Jul 1 with 7816 viewsMaySixth

a young man asking for help, asking for something to eat and drink, no ID, phone and could not speak a word of English

do you shut the door in his face or try and help him?

obviously the latter despite numerous others deciding not to

Or you just look into someone's eyes and realise they need help and stop being so scared
[Post edited 1 Jul 20:11]

It has nothing to do with being scared. And in any case fear and caution are natural responses to protect oneself and others. The decisions you make next are what counts.

Yes, you can tell a lot by looking in somebody’s eyes and of course their body language. But not everything.

Attempting to help people is laudable, but there is a time and a place for it. 1am on one’s doorstep isn’t it unless you work for somebody like say Crisis and know what you are doing.

I have cameras front and rear on my house, with door sensors to alert if the doors have been opened during certain hours. The cameras record sound and have damned good night video recording too.

I can log into the system from anywhere in the world, and see live footage, recordings, and the status of various other sensors from around the house.

I highly recommend at minimum some form of video doorbell.

Have been thinking about it for past month. Needed an emergency tradesperson on BH Monday, the only firm I could find who would come that day turned out to be a rogue outfit (RMM Maintenance covering NE England - swerve, swerve swerve - tried to flog me a new unit for £3,500 that actually costs £250 average + 1 hr fitting but wasn't even the cause of the problem which regular tradesman sorted next day for £150).

Maybe coincidence ... but but but ... towards midnight that same BH Mon, had intruder in back garden for first time in 12 years at this house. Took some getting into in v. rural area as garden gate was locked & only entry was via a neighbouring field. Luckily the door is see through glass & motion sensor lights meant my dog spotted him & gave voice. Felt I need something more than motion sensor lights front & back, and dog though!

Last words to me from my late Mum have stuck with me - "trust no-one". Sadly good advice these days.

You must have incredible perception to tell that someone isn't a threat just from their eyes.

I wouldn't be "scared" but I'd be wary at that time of the morning. And I wouldn't put Lady Dollers through the worry, since she was assaulted on her doorstep in the past.

As I said, my initial thought was he wouyld be on the rob or some others would quickly approach the house so I was wary but having born and bred in in London and seeing a lot of stuff happen, I parked the street sense when I could see he was desperate.

Admirable, yet stupid at the same time. You put yourself and those you love at potential risk. Next time, send them on their way for your own safety.

Not stupid at all in my opinion, I was right to bring him and until the police did their work and took him onwards

I'm not opening my door to a stranger at 1am. Simply too risky.

Not to say I wouldn't help him though. Would happily pass him some food and call people who can assist.

Yeh called the police straightaway and they arrived in 25 mins and did a great job

All done by Google Translate but he also told us he had been beaten earlier that day asking for food.
I asked him to show me the wounds and although he had some scratch marks on his back and forearms wasn't rnough to call an ambulance and he wasn't in physical distress.
When he said that I was actually more wary than ever as that would be an obvious thing to say to get people's sympathy.
Subsequently found via the police translation that the place he had run away from was nearly 4 hours from the front door.
God knows how he got there, must have hitched a lift part of the way.
Also said he was sleeping rough and he had about £2 in change in his pocket.
The incident was processed and cleared and the simple instruction was to get back to his hotel as it was technically a safe space and process his aslyum claim through immigration as he couldnt go round knocking on doors for food.
That bit made sense but no idea how he would get back to where he left as he had no money or ID or anything.

Surprised so many people who are saying that they wouldn't even open the door. My first thought would be that it was a neighbor or someone in trouble.

Would definitely go to the door and check who it was. If its just some tw4t would be far from impressed and close the door pretty quickly. But would definitely go an check just in case.

Perhaps another bigger dog to accompany yer current one? Otherwise, sounds a bit extreme but could you apply for a gun licence?

Not sure about the law where you are, but you clearly live in quite a rural setting. Here you just have to say you have a rodent problem and need a firearm to deal with it.

Might be a bit extreme, but nearly all my elderly farmer neighbors are armed to the teeth

Sounds like you took a risk, but it paid off. Well done.

Had a smaller but similar thing a while back - cam across a distressed young fella on my street and asked him what was up... he was deeply upset, pissed & couldn't walk, saying he was suicidal and smelled of a big bag of skunk. Ended up driving him to his place at the local YMCA and called in the office to let them know he was in a state. That turned on me quickly as he wasn;t allowed to be pissed - I just wanted them to know about the suicidal stuff, but it turned into me almost being in a position of grassing him up.

This stuff is very tricky to navigate and there's definitely danger, but if nobody steps up, things get worse.

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Quite - I put my phone on silent at night, & if anyone rang/knocked on my door at that time, my first thought would have been it's a massive emergency, possibly a neighbour alerting me that my house is on fire! And I'd only talk through the door, not open it unless it was someone I knew.

Re your later post suggesting a shotgun licence - no way, think I'd be more likely to injure myself than any intruder! An air rifle maybe, used to have one for dispatching myxie rabbits at the old house, but no rabbits here so I sold it.

You can say that now

You cant base safety on the look of someones eyes imo.

IF anything bad had happened youd be saying he clearly was a danger but you were taken in by their eyes.

Just not worth the risk for me. Phone police. Leave food outside. Your safe. Hes got food and help on the way.

Getting the poor frightened sod off the street and into a chair to wait 25 mins for the coppers is not a risk IMO although fair enough if some think it is.
The police interviewed him via a translator for an hour afterwards without any cuffs in the kitchen
