Mexico v England 20:59 - Jul 1 with 5185 viewsZx1988

Surprised to see that the bookies have England as favourites on Monday morning, especially with the match being held at the Aztexa.

England are 8/13 to qualify, with the Mexicans at 6/5. I'd have thought that England's form, and Mexico's record at home, would make the Mexicans firm favourites?

That said, I do wonder how we'll fare against a team who'll actually want to play.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

If we don’t solve the right back situation we are toast, maybe not against Mexico but soon. Spence clearly can’t play there, and who would have thought Declan Rice would get time there ? It looks like Quansah and James are out , so maybe Saka with three centre backs ?

Bit of a car crash really

I remember David Batty playing right back for England in the 1992 Euros v Sweden. He was Carp. I'll see if he's available

It depends on whether Mexico supporters are allowed to lay siege and fire fireworks at England's hotel throughout the night. Will the England's team bus and flights be mysteriously delayed. This is what is being alleged happened to Ecuador before their game with Mexico. I recall something similar happening to England in the past. England don't need chronic insomnia adding to their list of excuses

I don’t think there’s any doubt at all that it’ll be rather noisy outside the England squads hotel the night before the game.

Portugal played in the Azteca a few months ago and were slightly odds on. Yes the altitude is a huge factor but Mexico have at least one championship player.

That’s the betting market here. Would imagine it’ll be the reverse in say, Mexico.

lol it doesn't work like that. Just think if it did you'd be able to make huge amounts by arbitrage betting.

Fair enough, my bad. I’m not really a betting man. I worked in a bookies back in the 90s and it put me off.

England are going to struggle like hell in this game. 2 days to acclimatise themselves to a stadium over 7000ft above sea level is going to play a massive advantage to Mexico who have played all their games at high altitude already.

This. At between 2,000 and 3,00m, the symptoms are as follows
More pronounced hypoxia:
- Blood oxygen saturation may drop to around 90-93%.
- More rapid shortness of breath during physical exertion.
- Increased heart and respiratory rates to compensate.
Possibility of early symptoms of altitude sickness (in some people):
- Headaches, mild insomnia, possible nausea.

Acclimatisation produces more red blood cells, but takes more than a week before it starts to have an effect. Mexico have played all bar one of their matches at home.

If the entire WC was in Mexico, all the teams would acclimatise. But this stupid format forces all the other teams to be elsewhere so that they can't acclimatise. It is a very long way from a level playing field, and even though we have better players when things are even, I can't see us overcoming this huge disadvantage. It will be like all the England players have asthma.

Would be typical England in a way to go and win but Mexico have the stadium, fans, amazing home record and altitude advantage and yet to concede a goal I think?

Can't see anything other than a Mexico win likely in extra time or pens to prolong the agony.

In terms of the home record thing. You’ve got to remember that Mexico play in a federation that isn’t very good. I also don’t think their team is that good to be honest, a few tidy players that will all be used to the conditions but not one of them gets in the England squad.

For a country of 132M population where this is their number 1 sport, they’re a massive disappointment historically. As I said on another thread, I don’t think before the other night they’d won a knockout World Cup game in decades.

It is of course a very loseable game for England. That environment will be a hell of a challenge and we’ve got some knocks and tired looking players but I’d still have us as a favorites. Going to be all about navigating the first 25 minutes. There should be plenty of space as they’ll come flying at us.

Will be interesting to see who FIFA appoint as a ref as well. I’d expect the dark arts and them trying to wind up Jude etc in that atmosphere.

As I said on p1, it’s gobsmacking that Mexico have been gifted such a massive advantage by Fifa; for me that makes an absolute nonsense of the supposed level playing field of the competition.

I think it’s more the last 25 minutes than the first 25 that are likely to be problematic. We need to make damn sure we don’t go to extra time - need to use brain power in this one to overcome the undoubted physical advantages Mexico will have in it.

Hmm...and in 1966, England played all their games at Wembley. Host nations have long been given advantages; it's better for the tournament if they do well & it's some return for the costs of hosting.
BTW, I've taken Mexico to go through at 11/10 with Hill's.

In news for you, Wembley is not over 7,000 feet in altitude & doesn't require a week+ of specialised acclimatisation.

And in case you were wondering, teams used to playing at that altitude would also be physically advantaged by it when playing at sea level.

Scholes had asthma though and was often the best player on the pitch (expert when he was shoved on the left for England).

I'm no expert but they were saying on the radio the "sickness" that can come usually happens after 2 days or so so apparently that is why ENgland are holding back going there?

I still think it's going to be a big disadvantage to ENgland which a lot of people seem to be dismissing.

They seem to play a lot of their Friendlies in Maercia, presumably due to the altitude and teams not wanting to play there?

Not their fault the teams in their region aren't so great. However, having said that, its hard to gauge how a "good" team would hold up there.

I heard today that the highest altitude ground in England is West Brom. Have we got any West Brom players in the England squad, that could be handy ?

With Mexico’s record there and the altitude issues I don’t see England winning this one. Fatigue will play a major issue.
When I go to visit friend in Denver around the 5000ft altitude from my Florida home around 50ft altitude it takes me over a eeek to adjust,
This Mexico stadium is 7000ft. The England players are going to need Oxygen tanks strapped to there backs. It is no joke how fast they will fade.
Sorry I see 3-0 to Mexico

I don't see as big a margin as that. Tuchel has the brain to plan specifically for this one.

We'll need a set-up that's defensively strong, keeps possession so we're not chasing the ball, and makes the most of set pieces + players coming off the bench.

Weather forecast is good for England, only going to be 23 and rainy, that should also help clear out the smog and is cooler than typical.

Doesn’t change the altitude of course but it’s better to be playing in that than something 10-15 degrees hotter.

Don’t know how quickly Bobby Robson’s England side arrived in Mexico City to play Paraguay in 1986 but they played their last group game at 500m above sea level on 11th June and beat Paraguay 3-0 in Mexico City on 18th June.
