Trump/Infantani effect 09:23 - Jul 7 with 1516 viewsbsw72

It's interesting that when the WC started, I didn't feel the normal dislike that I tend to for US teams - usually caused more by the fans (USA USA USA) rather than the team themselves.

Team seemed a young, attacking team and showed great promise.

Roll forward one intervention by a certain DJ Trump and a simpering FIFA President and last night the team looked a shadow of itself from earlier in the tournie and pretty much any non US supporting fan was rooting for Belgium.

Sadly for the young US team, they are the ones seemingly taking the brunt for the President and Infantani's abuse of their positions.

It's really pssed me off actually, as the players have no blame in this - and anyone who says that they could have taken a stand and not played Balogun genuinely fails to understand the position they were put in and the pressure they would have been under.

What is more concerning is the fact that almost certainly nothing can or will be done to hold these individuals accountable.

How did Trump 'abuse his position'...all he did was ask. It's FIFA who then abused their position by concocting some fangled explanation to placate the president.

Yeah, love him or hate him Trump can phone who he wants if he has their number. FIFA is where the scandal lies with this one

It is a shame as this USA team is certainly one showing a lot of promise and will be probably be a golden age for USA. Unfortunately, the Commander in Quief said boblocks to it and made them the most universally unsupported team in a world cup.

I think that's over-simplifying it a bit

We have no idea what Trump said, what was promised/threatened etc

Not saying FIFA are any better, the whole thing absolutely stinks. But Trump has abused his position by getting involved in the first instance

Of course FIFA are a corrupt disgrace. But to absolve trump of blame is absurd. Basic decency and integrity involves not abusing your position to exert influence.

Apparently the player in question went to the Belgium dressing room after the match and that was much appreciated.

Yeah he was the real victim in all of this, had no say in any of the outcomes and could hardly let his team mates down once selected to play. Feel quite sorry for him in reality

He could if he had integrity and felt it was the right thing to do.

Then he'd be a villain in his own country, and would probably have ICE knocking his door off it's hinges six months down the line. Can you imagine what sort of snub the orange loon and his supporters would consider that to be?

I largely agree. But Starmer, our PM, got involved with the match timing for us didn't he. is that completely different is it?

He is basically English and plays for Monaco, he would only be a villain to those supporting corruption, which would be a positive thing if you have any integrity.

Trump’s being a shameless **** as usual, but yes the blame for this lies squarely at FIFA’s/Infantino’s door for bending to political pressure rather that defending the integrity of the game (again).

That's how mafiosi leaders work. They just ask if something is possible, or they say they don't like someone. They don't need to tell someone what to do or give an order to kill.

If a player gets a penalty given against him, & the player protests to the ref on the basis that it was a poor decision, the ref has to stand firm. That’s part of his job. If the ref overturns his penalty decision based on the protest it’s on him.

Trump & Infantino have probably spoken pretty regularly over the last few years & I would imagine consider themselves friends. A phone call from Trump to Infantino asking about the situation & if anything could be done about it pales in comparison to FIFA actually bending their rules because of said phone call, if that’s what’s happened

Totally agree. I always like to see the USA do well in these tournaments.

However, I was hoping they'd lose last night.

FIFA are just a disgrace. making rules up as they go along.
