Hate them. Is there a more classless, despicable bunch of w@nkers? Rattin in 66, paid off the Chile goalkeeper in 78, cheating cunit Maradona in 86, cheating cunit Maradona in 90, Simeoni in 98, Martinez in the penalty shoot-out in 22.

I'm sure I've missed out some others. Hate them, hate them, hate them.

Anyone agree? Or am I the only one?

Edited: to make clear that I am talking about the Argentina football team. Apologies if this wasn't clear from my OP.

I do agree about the cheating but they have produced some incredible players.

Hate Maradona for 86 but love him for everything else. Best ever for me in terms of at his peak he was the most talented. Also love him USA 94, charlied up and charging up to the camera to gurn into it after scoring, just for the shear mentalness of it.

Messi is class.

Treacle is a legend.

An alternative view of Messi - I don't agree with the subject headline; and not all of it is horrendous or exceptional, but some of it ...

Could really do with him slapping the referee against Switzerland.

Although, of course, the red card sanction would inevitably be suspended for 12 months.

Really hope we get them in the semis, want to smash them to bits on and off the pitch

Aye and they carry the flag of St George

You leave Georgia out of it. They make some gorgeous naturally fermented wines, and, although things are a long way from perfect, they are on a path towards democracy and orientation towards Europe rather than Moscow.

Let’s just theoretically smash them on the pitch and leave all that hard man stuff to your imagination.

Never quite understood how anyone could have an emotion as deep as "hate" for an entire nation based on something that happened in a football match decades ago. It barely even crosses my mind. Far more important things to worry about.

Poll: Ipswich offer you 10k a week, Norwich offer you 20k. Who do you join?

To be fair, the OP was clearly referring to football only matters rather than Argentina as a whole. The fact that others waded in with stuff about the Falklands is not his fault.

Is it not racist to say one hates an entire nation? I guess 27 upvotes means no.
Maybe it’s racist to expand it to for eg a continent?

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

The OP is quite clearly referring to football rather than the nation as a whole. So no, it’s not racism or even xenophobia.

In much the same way if someone said that they disliked Nigeria and then listed footballing reasons. That still wouldn’t be racism but more of a dislike for a football team.

There's some naughty behaviour there for sure and we never see that highlighted on the sanitised coverage of the BBC etc. but no way is he in the same league as Luis Suarez when it comes to the dark arts...or the completely out in the open skullduggery for that matter.

Poll: To make him more acceptable what should Gary O'Neill change his middle name to ?

Thank you Matt (twice). I've now edited the OP to make this clear, just in case anyone else should make the same mistake without reading the whole thread.

"Just seen this post. Stokie has replied far more succinctly than I could. I'm talking about the Argentina football team, I thought that was clear in my OP, sorry if it wasn't. I have no beef with the country or its people. I haven’t been or met any, but a good friend has and he raves about both...."

FWIW - I agree entirely that there are far more important things to worry about.

Agree - racist and not impartial to a sly bite of an opponent or two. Seemed to be in a league of his own.

Although in mitigation, he did score a hattrick at Carrot Road!

I completely agree - them and the French, can't stand either. There is the Maradonna hand which still annoys me, but also living in bases in Germany during the Falklands War I saw first hand how that unnecessary war (in my opinion) impacted on so many families.
There's just something about them I really don't like

Had forgotten about him, gets comparatively little coverage these days.

Have you forgotten Paraguay all ready? They kicked us all over in 1986 and don't appear to have moved on with tactics.

Agree since hand of sod. Not just because he cheated, but because he revelled in winning by cheating, and flaunted that. Horrible, unscrupulous man, no dignity.

Agree on the face of it. A certain amount of that was scrappiness. Maradona was born and raised in a shanty town / slum on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, not much in the way of school. Flawed character, but purely on ability, he's the GOAT IMO. He was like a ball of immaculate skill teleported from a species more evolved to play football. At his best, his opponents looked like pub players in comparison. Football has moved on, so we'll never see him (nor Pele) and Messi on the same pitch, but gauging by comparison with his direct peers, there's never been a superior footballer. 1986 got me hooked on football forever, mostly from being mesmerised by him, despite the handball cheating.
