Alternative to penalties 23:29 - Jul 7 with 2061 viewsCheltenham_Blue

Hear me out.

You start extra time as normal, but every 5 minutes, each team has to take off one player.
If still drawing at the end of extra time, you go into an unlimited “overtime” and one player comes off every 5 as before, this is the ‘next goal wins’ stage.

This continues until you effectively end up with rush keepers and it becomes a 1 v 1 duel.

Sudden death corners.

Taken in ABBA structure. Play goes on for 30 seconds or until the ball goes out of play. The defending team can score goals on the break.

First team to score wins. Don't need to go through both teams having a go. Brings an interesting tactical dynamic as well - do you take the first corner and hope to score? Or back yourself to defend it and then get two bites of the cherry? Do you leave more players up front to increase your chances of scoring on the break?

I guess if it's taken in ABBA structure, The Winner Takes It All ? The winner receiving more Money Money Money ? That's The Name Of The Game.

I am just glad that for once you didn't suggest that any of our Octagenarian Light Entertainment stars had to get involved!

Yes, it would have been rather inappropriate !!!! Ha Ha !!!

Have the penalty shootout before extra time. Everyone loves watching a shootout so that ticks that box. If extra time is a draw then the team that already won the shootout wins. Essentially the team that won get a 0.5 goal headstart. This will make extra time a much more exciting affair. Simple idea.

I'd say there's a very simple other alternative. winning a match in the 90 or 120 minutes that it's played!

I’m in favour of a multiball system. Throw another ball on to the pitch every 5 minutes

Penalties are great. Love watching them. A real test of player mentality. If you want to change the format, scrap extra time. 90 minutes then straight to penalties is my preference.

Who can throw a kettle over a pub?

That's the real extra time and penalties.

What if penalties were taken before extra time instead of after?

The team that wins the shoot-out would carry that advantage into extra time. So, if the match is still level after 30 minutes of extra time, the shoot-out winner takes the game.

That means the team that lost the shoot-out has no choice but to attack, while the other side has to decide whether to defend their advantage or try to kill the game off with another goal.

I think it would make extra time far more entertaining. Instead of both teams sitting deep and playing cautiously because they're worried about conceding, one team would be forced to chase the game, creating a much more open and exciting contest.

What about before the match?! Before every knock out game you have a quick penalty shoot out, whoever wins will win the game if it is a draw. Would stop teams just sitting back waiting for extra time and pens.

Never going to happen, but could be interesting, and remove the need for extra time too.

I still think the golden goal should be brought back. You score, you win. Simples

It was great in principle but in practice led to many cagey extra times leading to no goals and penalties as neither team wanted to make the mistake.

I think, if you want an alternative to penalties, it would be something like having 2 v 2 where the attacking side starts with the ball on the halfway line with the defenders having to start within their own area. There would then have to be a time limit for them to try to score in and the situation is then reversed. As someone else suggested above, why not penalties though?

Perhaps a return to blindfolded boys:

"The oddest World Cup tie-breaker of all didn’t come in the finals but in qualifying to reach the 1954 tournament. In Group Six, Spain and Turkey played each other twice after the Netherlands withdrew. They won one game each – Spain winning 4-1 in Madrid before slipping to a 1-0 defeat in Istanbul. Spain’s superior goal difference wasn’t considered a deciding factor, so they had a play-off in Rome. After that was inevitably drawn, a 14-year-old boy was blindfolded and then picked Turkey’s name in the draw. They went to the World Cup. And Spain, despite being 6-4 up on aggregate across the three matches, did not."

I'd scrap extra time, go straight to pens

That just exacerbates the problem of teams ‘playing for penalties’. It’s why so many extra time periods are so dull.
