The language barrier probably caused a few issues. Clarke was asking for a reason why the quality wasn't there, which is fair as, if Tuchel doesn't know, it might be hard to find for Wednesday. Perhaps Clarke shouldn't have referred to mentality, but it's a mountain out of a molehill. Bringing it up to Bellingham was unnecessary, though. Although the ITV studio built it up as a positive rather than trying to sew division, which is a plus.

Na, not having that. Tuchel denied it was anything to do with mentality, and then Clarke brought it up again. That's when Tuchel really lost it with him.

Because Tuchel said, "What do you mean, mentality?" In all honesty, I think Tuchel enjoyed the back and forth. He seemed to be smiling at the end of the interview. Not so sure if he'll be as happy to hear it being said to Bellingham before he got the chance to do a team talk, however.

Agreed, Clarke should be universally criticised for what he's done there, and I wouldn't blame Tuchel for having him thrown out of any press conferences and refusing to do interviews with him from this point on | | | | Login to get fewer ads

There's no language barrier there. The German for 'mentality' is 'Mentalität'. He knew exactly what was meant.

Quite possible Clarke doesn't properly understand the term!

| Gabriel Clarke on 06:47 - Jul 12 with 2643 views | itfc1108 | I can't see how the relationship between Tuchel and Bellingham is sustainable once the world cup is over. Tuchel is within his rights to be disappointed with the performance as the manager, but you can understand Bellingham's immediate reaction to be told that, having just played in such difficult conditions. I think they are probably putting up with each others, and their ego's to one side, because it is a world cup. But, I suspect it will be more difficult when the more mundane Euro qualifiers and autumn friendlies come around. | | | |

I don’t think they should conduct the interviews so quickly after the final whistle.

| Gabriel Clarke on 07:44 - Jul 12 with 2451 views | PioneerBlue | Tuchel was right about quality and mentality. England have nailed the culture side and collective spirit. They have not mastered control of the ball and game. Jude reacted only to the way it was served up by Gab Clarke not necessarily how Tucel or Barry would have set it up in context. Irrespective of all that, England is finding a way to get through games. Meeting one of the final 4 will require a higher quality to be successful, that is right, right?! [Post edited 12 Jul 8:19]

I don't think that will be the case, they are both professionals, and yesterday was just a heat of the moment thing. I'm pretty sure once things have cooled down a bit they will talk it out. Even if that means agreeing to disagree. As Benters mentions above, it's more to do with the interviews happening straight after the match, before the team and management have had a chance to share their views to each other. It's not helped by an interviewer who is clearly trying to look for problems that are not there. I'm sure the English media will now jump all over this and try and make it out to be a massive issue, when it really isn't. [Post edited 12 Jul 8:57]

Isn't that sort of the point though? You want to see emotion and reaction. We'd complain about footballers being boring if they interviewed them half an hour later by which time they'll have calmed down and pre-prepared their answers.

That being the main headline on the Beeb sums up the disgrace our media is. You always get the feeling they are itching for us to fail.

I think that part of the interview was completed by the BBC, not Clarke, so they basically picked up the ball and ran with it. Bellingham, from memory, did not say "perhaps he doesn't understand" in the ITV interview.

That 2nd part, "Bellingham, from memory, did not say "perhaps he doesn't understand" in the ITV interview" was definitely not in the ITV interview. But the basis for the BBC web story is definitely from Clarke's interview.

Yes. Interestingly the "mentality" argument, which is where the annoyance originally came from m, has now been overshadowed. Mind you, Bellingham had time to temper his comments - possibly even had time in the dressing room - before the second interview and didn't. Part of me prefers having a human rather than robot giving answers, though, in both cases.

Clarke misrepresented Tuchel's comments to Bellingham in order to get a reaction from him. Do you think Tuchel was disappointed with Bellingham's performance specifically? What convinces you that the two don't get along?
