People playing their phones out loud in public 18:42 - Jul 12 with 1886 viewsMark

Is it me, or is this getting worse and worse? Rather than wear headphones or earphones, some people just play videos, music or games out loud on their mobile phones and everyone around them has to put up with it. I would say I hear this about one in three times now on a train or a bus, and sometimes on planes, in cafes and bars too. I even heard two people broadcasting from their devices walking around a supermarket this week.

The Lib Dems proposed making 'sodcasting' illegal, and I would support that. At least some posters could be put up asking people to use headphones.

Yes,it’s very annoying. I don’t get that they don’t realise or care that people are around. It’s a Gen Z thing I suppose.

By a long, long distance, the people I see (& hear) doing this after not gen Z at all but older people who have very little social awareness. I have no qualms at all telling people that the whole London bus/train/whatever may not want to listen to the garbage Facebook video, WhatsApp voice mail or tik tok garbage they are playing at as loud volume. I find it's very rarely kids are anybody below 50 tbh.

And the peoople who just can't understand the concept of microphones, pre-amplifiers, digitislisation, transmission (through various digital systems) and decoded to the average volume to be heard comfortably (without disturbing neighbours) and without the need to shout all the way to Nigeria,or wherever.

And all whule sitting in the "quiet" coach of the train.

I find the exact opposite. Youngsters rarely carry earpieces through which they can privately enjoy their 'phone content without disturbing their neighbours.

The one I've noticed a lot more lately is people in their 60s and 70s watching videos of their grandkids at full volume on repeat in restaurants, bars, hotel lobbies...anywhere you might be trying to relax.

Every single one of them is oblivious to anyone around them.

I travelled a fair bit by train across Europe in the last year and never experienced it. In France, there were posters on trains and occasional tannoy reminders; there, you are expected to go to the end of the carriage by the outside door to make or take a phone call. Back to UK, and London to Ipswich was simply horrible; chavtastic ignorance and lack of respect, as expected sadly.

As an antisocial barsteward who nowadays rarely uses trains or buses apart from on holidays, I can’t say I’ve noticed this. Even in London on the tube I haven’t. But then I’m fascinated by the lengths people go to to avoid eye contact. So I tend to spend be time grinning at people and saying hello. They probably think I’m an axe murderer and/or sex pest, but what the hell. It’s unnatural to sit by someone and not talk to them where I come from (not so much back in Ipswich; we’re a pretty reserved bunch ourselves).

That was one of the many really nice things about visiting Japan. Spent a fair amount of time on trains, everyone queued in an orderly fashion, everyone on the train was perfectly quiet, although plenty silently used their phones.
And you could book a train on line, then easily switch to a later one with no extra charge. And the trains have long been privatised.

Not only that if they are out exercising listening to music or what have you,it’s dangerous as you can’t hear what’s coming up behind you.

I’ve seen it loads of times myself round the lanes.

I bet they didn't leave any litter either. Japanese people just don't in my experience.

When Japanese fans have travelled to watch their rugby team, their fans religiously collect up all their litter at the end of the game.

There's also the ones that bike through the middle of town, blaring out some kind of music from a speaker - and then seem to do multiple laps, quite why they think everyone else wants to listen to it is beyond me.

When I was a sprog I had a Raleigh racing bike with a rack on the back, to which I attached a cassette player and boomed out Black Sabbath whilst on the saddle.

No, it is not just you. I too find it very disturbing.

Last week we visited the beautiful and normally peaceful National Trust Bodnant Gardens in Wales. On three separate occasions the peace was disturbed by people shouting on their mobile phones as they walked around. On one occasion a lady came and sat on a bench near us and was having a conversation with a friend on speakerphone. Her friend was clearly distressed and bemoaning how terrible her life was and how she had nothing to live for. It was painful to listen to and we had to move away. I was stunned at her insensitivity in relaying this conversation by speakerphone to all nearby.

Almost every match day as I walk along the Waterfront to Portman Road, the same guy cycles past with music blaring out from a speaker on the back of his bike. I am convinced he deliberately times it and it is a "look at me" thing.

Yes, that's the one, he also goes through the town centre as well - we've been sitting outside at either Marinero Lounge or Isaacs, and you can almost time when he'd next be passing once he's done his loop of the town. Actually, I think there may be two of them that split a shift between them.

I thought it was a younger demographic thing, but I was out at a restaurant the other night and there was a couple probably over 60 something, and they were just sat there watching a facebook video of some form, loud, annoying and for about 20 minutes of different videos

Thanks for the replies, I am glad it is not just me annoyed by this.

It is especially annoying when you pay for something to enjoy such as a train ride or visit to a cafe and restaurant, then someone nearby starts playing stuff out load on their phone. It is not just the tinny electronic sound, but the frustration of how inconsiderate the person is, forcing you to listen to their phone with you having no control without confronting them (which perhaps we should more, but may be dangerous in some cases). Earphones cost just a few pounds.

I suppose the three categories of people who do it are A) People who don't think about the fact it may annoy others. B) People who know it will annoy others but do not care. C) People who want others to hear it and want the attention.

Gave that a go once on a long bike ride. Absolutely hated the fact that i couldn't hear sod all of what was going on around me. The countryside sounds and birds singing was far more pleasant.

For medical reasons I have had to give up cycling for a while, for someone who went out most days on my bike it’s been bloody awful. But I am allowed to walk.I’m with you on that, you really need to hear what is going on around you if you are cycling.

Like I said I only walk now,so I see a lot of people doing the same, one day I was out walking a lady was a fair way ahead of me,and she was listening to music, she was walking on the wrong side of the lane and didn’t have a clue there was a car trying to squeeze past on the lane.

Considering how tight some of the lanes are around here, with blind corners etc,for your own safety it’s really dangerous listening to music whilst exercising.
