The details are pretty shocking as well - looks like it was a bit of a UK-wide network, based on the locations of the various arrests. [Post edited 13 Jul 16:54]

This report: https://www.theguardian.com/uk it says: "The Guardian understands the intelligence that led to the arrests emerged over the weekend. Arrests were made with the event already under way, which sources suggested indicated how late the intervention came. The event closed earlier than planned as a precaution and a major incident was declared." Sounds like a near miss - 15,000 people there... God only knows what might have happened.

| Has this been mentioned? on 17:23 - Jul 13 with 2577 views | Cheltenham_Blue | There was a whole load of disinformation being spread about this last week on Elon's cess pit. I had a go at a fair few about it, most of it centred around calling the event "a jihadist meeting for men", or stating that, "Saudi Arabia (amongst other countries) has banned these gatherings because of extremist connections but here in the UK we are hosting it", which is a lie, using a half truth. As I've mentioned before, the sooner that those who incite and facilitate this sort of behaviour and radicalisation are brought to justice, the better. Musk, Führage, and Tommy Ten-Names are by no means innocent in things like this, and have a lot to answer for. | |

...too focussed on the possible repercussions of crime rather than the crime itself. You could say that they have a "default" position when it comes to these situations these days, but that's probably a bit controversial. Either way they've certainly fooked this one up, arresting one man and saying it wasn't terror related, having to release him, and then arresting another one and saying it was. Bunch of clowns.

Maybe if they were allowed to get on with investigating, rather than having to put out constant updates and PR quotes to assuage the baying mobs of scandal-obsessed media and hate-searching public, things might progress faster?

No doubt you're both generally right, but I do feel for the police on worrying about potential consequences of certain crimes - there's a pretty toxic atmosphere out there.

I'd imagine that further evidence has emerged which has changed the picture. A but like in medicine how a diagnosis can change with time as we get more information.

The actual words were re the Ann Widdecombe murder "At this point there is still no information to suggest that this is a terrorism related incident". I wouldn't say it was definitive and further information obviously changed that.

then why make statements when 'they don't know the motive'? coincidently, my post pretty much replicated the concern expressed by the uk terrorism tzar.

Yeah, the need for a blow by blow account in real time can't help, nor can the way certain groups and individuals try to use certain crime to add weight to their messaging either.

then why not list all the many other things that there was no information to suggest that the murder was related to? why make a specific point about politics and terrorism - when they admitted they had no idea what the motivation was? coincidently, my post pretty much replicated the concern expressed by the uk terrorism tzar. i fear that bloots' post above is correct and the police were trying to prioritise a particular narrative and it has blown up in their face. it has also made it look like farage was more on the ball than they were. which is bad.

The thing i struggle to get my head around on the Anne Widdecombe case, if indeed there is a terrorism angle, is why her? She's not exactly a relevant politician anymore. I guess we'll find out in due course.

Probably because she was a 78 year old woman. Easy target with zero security

....high profile Reform spokesperson, fairly fundamental religious beliefs, been on "Strictly", plus an easy target public figure. Of course the rozzers will probably change their mind tomorrow and it'll be a random burglary gone wrong.
