Losing in the semi final or the final?

Have a feeling we might win tomorrow but then lose to Spain (we'll go 1-0 up try to defend it and lose 3-1) Perhaps it would just be best to lose tomorrow to save the pain!

I have been mulling this one over too … I’m erring on losing in the final for a few reasons … mainly Argentinian.

I'm inclined to agree, plus it saves having to play in the most pointless game ever.

What, even more pointless than a Norwich City league game after February?

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

We spent 36 years harking back to the 1990 semi final.

Why on earth would anyone not want to make a final?

That sounds a bit like the Scot’s. They have lost before a ball has even been kicked.

That would make us the Norwich city of international football.

at least if you lose in the final you first had the opportunity to win in the final.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Obviously the final.

Had Arsenal not won the PL title do you think they would have preferred to finish 2nd or 3rd?

This x10000

Losing in a final is horrible, losing to this Argentina team in a semi final would be even worse.

The answer to this is to reduce the pain of defeat for getting so close!

Why have we stopped harking back at the 2018 semi-final and gone all the way back to 1990?

No, that's Scotland - they got given the Monday off for playing a group game.

Losing a semi final is worse than losing a final, whoever the opposition is.

I’d always rather lose in the final. Stating the obvious but it means that it’s taken the tournament winners to beat us. Losing in a semi final leaves you with that what if feeling. I was at both FA Cup semi finals that we lost and it’s just the worst feeling

Lose in the semis definitely. Have the Spanish in-laws arriving on Friday..

Would have to watch final with loadsa Irish friends who traditionally support anyone but England and the Spanish outlaws.

Final. I think just reaching the final would be a huge achievement for this group, and would be considered a successful tournament.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Final. We've never got to a WC final outside of England and getting that far and losing to Spain is no disgrace at all, albeit it would be disappointing. Not to mention the fact this semi is against Argentina, so beating them would be nice after the whole hand of God and Beckham red card games.

If someone offered you to beat Argentina 3-0 tonight and lose 2-1 to Spain in the final would you take it now?

I wouldn't as I want us to win the thing, but I'd be tempted.

I don't think this Spanish attack is anywhere near good enough to score three times against a good defence that doesn't have to chase the game.

Losing the final it has to be, win tonight and the lead up to Sunday and the spectacle it'll be with the World there watching will be fantastic, I'm pretty sure the pubs would want this too, absolutely huge for them..

Neither.

However, if we want to avoid the risk of pain, then we'd better not enter at all. Got to be in it to win it.

Conversely, just getting to the final of the World Cup is an achivement in itself. Only 13 countries ever have (if you count West Germany and Germany together), several of those haven't featured for over 60 years.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Yeah! I watched an interview with Lambert saying Scotland could
Lose 3-0 to Brazil and still go through. Didn’t work out well for them. It is a real mentality issue for the scots
