Hmmm, let's not forget that the number plate on one of the cars was "H982 FKL" which started to attract attention.

I doubt very much whether Clarkson and chums had a plate like that by accident.

When I went to Argentina I had absolutely no trouble off anyone, not a single word of hostility from anyone, not even generalities about the English or British.

Bumped into a mate yesterday, he'd just returned from Miami for the Norway game.

Said that even the few Argies at the game, and around the stadium were in England fans faces, fronting up. Tonight will be deeply unpleasant in that stadium

Not something I agree with or feel myself but "pretty much every war we fought was just and heroic" is the nationalist baseline for more or less every country on earth, including ours.

Well, their vice president is certainly trying to keep everything calm and sensible.....

"This is not just another match. I'm not going to be politically correct - against the English, it's always something more," said Villarruel.

"It's the Malvinas, it's Diego, it's Leo's last one, and it's about putting the invaders in their place.

"Long live Argentina! Because until our very last breath, we will reclaim what is ours!"

Think this deserves a reply from an English politician.

apparently, the program featured sporty v8 cars. The 928 being a v8 was earmarked for the program. Jeremy Clarkson wanted a particular sportier type of 928 and there were only 2 of that particular model available and they chose the one in better nick which being 25 or so years old at that point was understandable and it happened to have that numberplate, (issued at first registration and not bought and added to the car at a later date). However they must have realized the possible link to 1982 Falklands, you would be stupid not to. So it is co-incidence that a 928 with that plate was available, but unlikely they did not recognize what could happen. They took a heck of a chance though. I expect they would have had some sort of security back up.

They've been saying "it's Diego" like England in some way wronged him, rather than the other way round?

(For all his many faults, Maradona would also have absolutely despised the Milei government)

The irony of any Argentinian who isn't of indigenous South American descent saying that is quite something. (I don't know if this particular person is of indigenous descent, to be fair).

Yvette Cooper has come and said something already

"The Falklands Islands are British - sovereignty rests with the UK, self-determination rests with the islanders.

As Stephen Doughty said in Parliament again this week, our commitment to the Falklands is unwavering."

And the war was just a desperate attempt from a dead on it's backside military junta trying to do something populist - had they left it alone it would probably have been sorted by now

Was footage on socials doing the rounds of some fairly fractious "engagements" at that game.

Unlikely, one of the more thorough settler colonial genocides, only about 3% of the population are indigenous (and they're not generally very partial to Milei's politics).

I'm guessing the animosity was aimed at having a massive clapper like Jeremy Clarkson in their country - his nationality is irrelevant

Their team manager has a different view:

'Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni said he was "not going to mix" football and politics as he looked ahead to his side's World Cup semi-final against England in Atlanta on Wednesday..."The reality is that this is a football match. I can't mix things up, especially out of respect for what happened so many years ago," said Scaloni..."It was a very sad period in our history, and there isn't much we can do about it, that's the reality..."Things are happening elsewhere in the world, and we criticise the existence of war. We certainly remember those people, of course. But it is a football match; we shouldn't confuse the two."'
