Mortgage included. Student loan ? Think about it.
If you don't have any debts, it depends on the duration of the investment, and the ease of access to said funds. Also, the risk you can tolerate.
Also, consider your pension pot - could it be expanded ?

How long do you want to invest it for?
Vanguard do some funds which target specific years so I assume they taper down the risk as the year approaches. Their fees are usually low as well. I would get some professional advice. Better to pay a small amount to invest it sensibly than potentially lose a big chunk. |  | | |

If you see an offer too good to be true it probably is. At the end of the day it all depends on how high a risk you want to take.
You have things like paintings, classic cars etc.
Gold, the stock market where you either pick individual shares yourself or have a company like Hargreave Lansdown where you can put money into various funds.
During the pandemic when Carnival cruise lines share bombed I bought one hundred for £700. This gave me onboard credit of £150 when I sailed to America with P&O. On return the shares had gone from £7 each to £13 so I sold them, making a £600 profit, plus the £150 I had been given as onboard credit therefore doubling my outlay. I think the return is around 3.6% which is a little better that the 2.5% some ISAs return.

That’s what I’d do. I’m getting 8%+ in a medium risk one.
Value can go down was well as up of course, but over time any slumps have always been ridden out if you are genuinely investing for the longer term and can afford to wait out any drops, rather than saving for an upcoming purchase. Not that I know much about it. |  |

Premium bonds are wonderful for petty cash, big advocate. One of my mates won 25k last year or similar.
If you have a medium to long term time horizon though, the vast majority of your funds need to be in equities.
EDIT: I think income on PBs is also tax free which, in your example, would mean you need a 7% yield or so pre tax to make it equivalent. They really are a great place to park cash. [Post edited 19 Jul 15:04]

I think you’d want slightly more global exposure going forward rather than just to own US.
At the end of each month I sweep all my residual cash into ishares MSCI ACWI, which is still over half in the U.S but gives you exposure to EM, Japan and Europe.
I think EM exposure is going to be extremely important going forward for long term investors. | | | |

Plus, of course, with PBs your capital is entirely safe (assuming the country doesn't collapse), can never be reduced. Which is a significant bonus compared with other forms of investment/gambling. I'm a big fan. Haven't won big, but do get prizes very regularly. |  |

Are medium/low risk funds all equities, or do they mix in bonds too?
I made the decision a while back to invest aggressively in high risk funds and I’d encourage most people to do that same. As long as you don’t need the money for a few years.
One thing you might want to do is drip-feed the money into the market. Maybe 2.5k in per month for the next month. That just gives you a little hedging against a short term correction. |  | | |

Anybody with a long term time horizon should be max risk in equities.
Drip feeding/dollar cost averaging is also an excellent way to iron out bumps in the road.
People really over complicate investing but it’s really not hard - but does require patience of which not a lot of people have these days… | | | |
